This study addresses a major issue facing the wool industry - the formation of entangled fibres or pills on wool knitwear. By examining the factors that contribute to the inconsistent pilling results, ways of improving the test procedures have been identified. This will have practical implications for the textile industry.

Intense exercise results in muscular inflammation. Molecular techniques were used to identify novel inflammatory proteins in human muscle. Males and females displayed different levels of exercise-induced inflammatory proteins. Interestingly, dairy protein supplements reduced these inflammatory proteins post-exercise. Increased dietary red meat consumption, with training, had no impact on muscle inflammation, although strength gain was improved.

Dehairing is the process that removes coarse hair and other impurities from a cashmere fleece in order to obtain luxury fine cashmere fibres. This study has examined and optimised the machine settings on a locally produced cashmere dehairing unit which has led to improvement in the quality of dehaired cashmere fibres. The improved dehairing unit is now in commercial use, adding significant value to the local cashmere industry.

To develop an objective and repeatable method of identification and classification of animal fibres, two different integrated systems were developed to mimic the human brain's ability to undertake feature extraction and discrimination of animal fibres. Both integrated systems are basically composed of an image processing system and an artificial neural network system.

Examines the sheared edge quality of different automotive sheet metals resulting from the trimming process using experimental tooling and finite element modelling. The significant differences in burr, sliver and edge profile formation have been explained in terms of the strain distribution and tensile properties of the materials.

Roll forming (including corrugating) of high strength steel has for many years been treated as an art rather than a science. This work, by using analysis at both the microscopic and standard mechanical level, has demystified the production of these high strength steels, and has helped point the direction for further development of these efficient construction products.

This work represents the first systematic study on the properties and processing performance of Australian alpaca fibres. The resistance to compression behaviour of alpaca fibres was found to differ considerably from that of wool. A new technique has been developed to objectively measure the softness of fibres. The bleaching and dyeing behaviour of alpaca fibres has also been examined.

Investigates a novel post-spinning yarn engineering technique, using the original concept of drafting-against-untwisting, to produce fine yarns with improved properties such as hairiness. With this concept, a "parent" staple yarn is simultaneously "false" untwisted and drafted to make a much finer yarn, in a continuous process.

This study investigated injection practices and occupational exposure to blood in rural north Indian health settings. The findings highlighted a range of practices potentially contributing to the transmission of hepatitis and HIV to both patients and staff in these settings. Interventions need to focus on the development of organisational structures to support and facilitate safer practices.

A new duplex surface engineering process has been developed that involves the deposition of chromium on ferritic nitrocarburised steel surfaces at low temperatures. This process formed a thin and hard chromium carbonitride surface layer and is to be applied to hardened tooling used in metal forming operations for improved wear performance and die life.

Traditional optimisation methods are incapable of capturing the complexity of today's dynamic manufacturing systems. A new methodology, integrating simulation models and intelligent learning agents, was successfully applied to identify solutions to a fundamental scheduling problem. The robustness of this approach was then demonstrated through a series of real-world industrial applications.

Novel mathematical models to predict crankshaft pin grinding forces, out-of-roundness and thermal damage were developed as part of this thesis. The models were validated at a local automotive manufacturer's plant. The outcomes of this research have resulted in reduced scrap and warranty costs, improved manufacturing process quality and reduced lead times.

The thesis highlights how women reconstruct themselves after mammography, following a positive diagnosis of cancer, and post mastectomy. It juxtaposes women's experiences of breast cancer with doctors' perceptions of their role in treating patients, allowing an understanding of how risk and uncertainty are transferred between the private and public spheres.

The mechanisms of heat and mass transfers between heat-treatment fluidised beds and immersed workpiece were studied by using computational simulation and experimental validation. A model called Double Particle-layer and Porous Medium was developed to simulate the gas flow and heat transfer between fluidised beds and immersed workpiece.

Trickling filters have been used to treat wastewater for over 100 years. In this thesis, wastewater was introduced into laboratory trickling filters at 1 to 4 places simultaneously. Where traditional single feeding led to ponding, multi-feeding let to reduced ponding and improved removal of carbon and nitrogen.
