The impact of propensity evidence on juror decisions

The thesis's study evaluated the effect that the admission of an accused's prior criminal behaviour had on mock jurors' verdict decisions. The findings indicated that exposing participants to evidence about any previous offence biases the decision. Further, the greater the similarity of the previous offence with the present charge, the more likely the accused was found guilty. The clinical portfolio seeks to demonstrate through the presentation of four case studies, the various pathways (or offence trajectories) contained within the Pathways Model that may lead an adult male to sexually offend against a child.

How the public perceive stalking

The study demonstrated that the context and frame placed on behaviour are significant in whether the behaviour was perceived as stalking. It was argued that stalking laws that have strict intent requirements are more robust against misuses of the law brought about by differences in individual's perceptions. The portfolio investigated the current assessment and treatment practices of individuals who have been convicted of stalking within Victoria. Four case studies are presented.

Body image in adolescent girls

This study investigated the Tripartite Influence Model of body image and eating disturbance in adolescent females. The model was found to be a satisfactory representation of the social, cultural and individual factors proposed to promote body dissatisfaction, dieting and bulimic behaviours in 14 to 18 year old girls. The portfolio presents four case situations in which the specialist knowledge of a clinical psychologist has shown to be beneficial to pediatric patients, their families, and medical staff at a major metropolitan hospital.

A cross-cultural examination of social and sexual behaviour in High Functioning Autism and Down Syndrome

The focus of this research was to obtain an understanding of the social and sexual behaviour of adolescents with High Functioning Autism (HFA) or Down Syndrome (DS) in comparison to Typically Developing (TD) adolescents across cultures. The findings highlight the importance of cross-cultural research and indicate the need for sex education. The portfolio presents four case studies which support the proposition that insecure attachment is only likely to lead to depression in the presence of socially-related and other psychological difficulties, since not all insecurely attached children develop depressive symptoms.

PTSD symptomatology in children and adolescents : treatment development and evaluation

This thesis developed, implemented and evaluated a cognitive-behavioural group treatment programme for children and adolescents experiencing symptoms of PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder). Results of the study indicate that symptoms of sleep disturbance and flashbacks, reduced markedly in the participants, providing a useful tool in reducing synptoms experiences by individuals exposed to trauma. The Professional portfolio presents four case studies that demonstrate the clinical application of the affect of chronic illness on the psychological adjustment of the sufferer and their families.

Subjective wellbeing as an affective construct

The affective component of Subjective Wellbeing (SWB) was investigated according to the Circumplex model of affect. Structural equation modelling demonstrated that affect is the dominant component of SWB and it is concluded that core affect is the central component of SWB, and the driving force behind SWB homeostasis.

Body image, muscularity and weight loss among people who attend gymnasiums

Biosocial models of weight loss and increased muscles were empirically tested among adult exercisers. Although women experienced greater body dissatisfaction, both genders engaged in potentially risky strategies to reach their body goals, ranging from the use of food supplements and steroids to bulimic behaviours and excessive exercise.

Utility of parent training for child behaviour difficulties

Focuses on parent training for child behaviour difficulties and includes four case studies providing a detailed assessment, formulation and evaluation of the treatment. The reports illustrate the utility of parent training alone and in combination with other psychological therapies and pharmacotherapy in the treatment of different childhood disorders.

Longitudinal study of children's disordered eating and muscle preoccupation

This thesis examined the role of individual factors in the development of dieting and muscal preoccupation in children. The main factor associated with these weight and shape concerns was perfectionism. It is important to identify risk factors in order to design intervention programs to decrease these behaviours in children.

Factors influencing the relationship between sexual abuse and academic achievement

This study examined factors expected to influence the relationship between sexual abuse and academic achievement in an adolescent inpatient psychiatric population. It was found that sexual abuse combined with either low intelligence, substance abuse, internalising behaviour problems or externalising behaviour problems predicted poor academic achievement. The supporting portfolio aims to discuss the proposed relationship between attachment and adolescent depression, highlighting the clinical relevance of this body of research with four cases of adolescent depression.

Psychosocial epidemiology of colorectal cancer

The research explored the role played by personality and stress in the development and progress of colorectal cancer. Personality type was related to health outcomes following diagnosis, and to participation in bowel cancer screening. The personality types also differed in terms of their capacity to deal with stress.

Perceptions and personality : a viewer-centred approach to film violence research

This thesis took a viewer-centred approach to the study of media violence. The findings indicated that viewer perceptions and personality mediate the affective, cognitive and arousal responses of viewers. The importance of the viewer perception and personality examined in this thesis also differed as a function of gender and age. The portfolio focused on the current Victorian correctional system's response to, and attempts to rehabilitate, convicted sexual offenders. It presents four case studies to demonstrate how the Victorian Sexual Offender Treatment Program attempts to apply empirically validated "best practice" principles of offender rehabilitation.

Reinforcement sensitivity theory : a paradigm for understanding the motivational processes underlying alcohol use

Provides an examination of the processes which motivate individuals to drink alcohol. It was found that heavier drinkers are highly sensitive to reward yet more likely to experience negative affect, both generally, and in response to alcohol-related cues. Based on these findings a model focusing on the links between personality, mood and craving for alcohol was developed.

Depression and anxiety in patients with cancer and their families

This thesis identified aspects of family relationships and the patients' illness that were associated with depression and anxiety in patients and their relatives after a cancer diagnosis and during treatment. It also tested the ability of a measure of family relationships to identify psychological distress in these families.

Exploration of the multifaceted dimensions of successful ageing

This thesis explored older adults' experiences of successful ageing. Self-acceptance, attitudes to ageing, and flexibility emerged as influencing factors. Acceptance was described as a personal struggle and underpinned criteria of successful ageing. Overall, ageing successfully seems anchored in our need to become integrated and find meaning in life.
