This paper describes the exploration of a synergic effect within n-type inorganic–p-type organic nanohybrids in gas sensors. One-dimensional (1D) n-type SnO2–p-type PPy composite nanofibers were prepared by combining the electrospinning and polymerization techniques, and taken as models to explore the synergic effect during the sensing measurement. Outstanding sensing performances, such as large responses and low detection limits (20 ppb for ammonia) were obtained. A plausible mechanism for the synergic effect was established by introducing p–n junction theory to the systems. Moreover, interfacial metal (Ag) nanoparticles were introduced into the n-type SnO2–p-type PPy nano-hybrids to further supplement and verify our theory. The generality of this mechanism was further verified using TiO2–PPy and TiO2–Au–PPy nano-hybrids. We believe that our results can construct a powerful platform to better understand the relationship between the microstructures and their gas sensing performances.

Nanoparticle reinforced metal matrix possess much better mechanical properties over microparticle reinforced metal matrix composites as well as corresponding monolithic matrix materials. However, the fabrication methods of nanoparticle reinforced metal matrix composites are complex and expensive. This paper investigates and discusses the mechanisms of all the fabrication process, such as powder metallurgy, liquid metallurgy, compocasting and hybrid methods, available in the literature. This gives an insight on challenges associated with different processes and ways to improve the fabrication processes. It is found that modified traditional fabrication processes are mainly applied for these materials. The main problem is to achieve reasonably uniform distribution of nanoparticle reinforcement in the methods other than mechanical alloying when the volume or weight percent of reinforcement is higher (> 1%).

The preparation of nano structured materials such as nanoparticles, nanofiber and nanowires have been a focus of research in the last two decades. Due to their large surface-to-volume ration and superior properties compared to the conventional macroscopic materials, these materials promise to revolutionize many fields such as electronics, catalysis, and biomedicine. Hence, controlling the growth of these nanostructures has been a global interest. Although controlling the formation of macroscopically sized inorganic materials can be easily achieved, it is a challenge if the size of a material is reduced to a micrometer or nanometer scale. Synthesis of structures using organic templates has been demonstrated to be a simple and convenient approach, since the organic matter can be easily removed by calcination or suitable solvents. These organic templates include colloidal particles and fibers of polymers, aggregates of surfactants, carbon materials such as carbon nanotubes, organic crystals and fibers in small-molecule gels (SMGs) and polymer gels.

Understanding the cellular target structure and thereby proposing the best delivery system to achieve sustained release of drugs has always been a significant area of focus in biomedical research for translational benefits. Specific targeting of the receptors expressed on the target cell represents an effective strategy for increasing the pharmacological efficacy of the administered drug. Liposomes offer enhanced conveyance as a potential carrier of biomacromolecules such as anti-cancer proteins, drugs and siRNA for targeting tumour cell death. Commonly used liposomal constructs for various therapies are Doxil, Myocet, DepoCyt and Abraxanes. However, recent strategy of using multifunctional liposomes for the sustained release of drugs with increased plasma residence time and monoclonal antibody-based targeting of tumours coupled with imaging modalities have attracted enormous scientific attention. The ability of liposomes coated with specific ligands such as Apo-E derived RGD R9 and Tat peptide, to reverse the conceptualisation of drug resistance and cross the blood brain barrier, provides promising future for their use as an efficient drug delivery system. By outlining the recent advancements and innovations in the established concept of liposomal drug delivery, this review will focus on the multifunctional liposomes as an emerging novel lipid based drug delivery system.

We describe for the first time the electrochemical co-deposition of composites based on a reactive base metal and graphene directly from a one-pot aqueous mixture containing graphene oxide and Zn2+. In order to overcome stability issues the Zn2+ concentration was kept below a critical threshold concentration, ensuring stable graphene oxide suspensions in the presence of cationic base metal precursors. This approach ensures the compatibility between the cationic base metal precursor and graphene oxide, which is more challenging compared to previously reported anionic noble metal complexes. Spectroscopic evidence suggests that the reason for destabilisation is zinc complexation involving the carboxylate groups of graphene oxide. The composition of the electrodeposited co-composites can be tuned by adjusting the concentration of the precursors in the starting mixture. The nano-composites show zinc particles (<3 nm) being uniformly dispersed amongst the graphene sheets. It is also demonstrated that the composites are electrochemically active and suitable for energy storage and energy conversion applications. However, a factor limiting the discharge efficiency is the reactivity of the base metal (low reduction potential and small particle size) which undergoes rapid oxidation when exposed to aqueous electrolytes.

Microcompression tests were performed to determine the mechanical behavior of nano-crystalline Cu/Fe and Fe/Cu multilayers, as well as monolithic Cu and Fe thin films. The results show that the micropillars of pure Cu thin film bulge out under large compressive strains without failure, while those of pure Fe thin film crack near the top at low compressive strains followed by shear failure. For Cu/Fe and Fe/Cu multilayers, the Cu layers accommodate the majority of plastic deformation, and the geometry constraints imposed by Fe layers exaggerates the bulging in the Cu layers. However, the existence of ductile Cu layers does not improve the overall ductility of Cu/Fe and Fe/Cu multilayers. Cracking in the Fe layers directly lead to the failure of the multilayer micropillars, although the Cu layers have very good ductility. The results imply that suppressing the cracking of brittle layers is more important than simply adding ductile layers for improving the overall ductility of metallic multilayers.

We describe a new electrochemical detection approach towards single protein molecules (microperoxidase-11, MP-11), which are attached to the surface of graphene nanosheets. The non-covalently functionalized graphene nanosheets exhibit enhanced electroactive surface area, where amplified redox current is produced when graphene nanosheets collide with the electrode.

Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of a novel nano-hybrid material based on diatom silica microparticles from diatomaceous earth (DE) and graphene oxide (GO). Two different approaches for the fabrication of nano-hybrids were used, including covalent coupling of GO sheets onto the diatom surface and electrostatic attachment. Covalent attachment was carried out through a facile amine coupling strategy via activation of carboxyl groups on GO, followed by covalent attachment to amine terminal groups of 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES) functionalized DE particles. Electrostatic attachment of GO (i.e. negatively charged) was carried out on positively charged APTES functionalized DE particles. The GO decorated DE nano-hybrids prepared with both the fabrication processes were extensively characterized by SEM, TEM, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopy to confirm the new chemical composition and structure. The application of the GO-DE nano-hybrid as a smart pH sensitive micro-drug carrier at pH 7.4 and pH 3.5 was demonstrated using a model drug, indomethacin (IMC). Finally, the drug release data were fitted to zero-order and Korsmeyer-Peppas models to understand the mechanism of drug release. This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Applications of LSPR nano-particles in various areas of solar cells, LSPR biosensors, and SERS biosensors, based on interaction of light with noble metal nano-particles is increasing. Therefore, design and nano-fabrication of the LSPR devices is a key step in developing such applications. Design of nano-structures with desirable spectral properties using numerical techniques such as finite difference time domain (FDTD) is the first step in this work. A new structure called nano-sinusoid, satisfying the some desirable LSPR characteristics, is designed and simulated using the FDTD method. In the next stage, analytical method of electro static eigen mode method is used to validate the simulation results. The, nano-fabrications method of electron beam lithography (EBL) is implemented to fabricate the proposed profile with high precision. Finally, atomic force microscopy (AFM) is used to investigate the shape of the fabricated nano-particles, and the dark field microscopy is employed to demonstrate the particular spectral characteristics of the proposed nano-sinusoids.
