Mythform : the making of Nearamnew at Federation Square

Nearamnew is the name of a public artwork created at Federation Square, Melbourne. This is the story of how the artwork was conceived, developed and installed. It reproduces all the stories woven into the plaza, and explains where they come from, and how they were turned into 'concrete poems'.

The thesis examines the life and times of former union organiser and Tasmanian ALP Premier, Eric Reece. It analyses the historical and biographical forces shaping state Labor politics in twentieth century Australia and investigates the ideologies of development, progress and environmentalism in Tasmania.

Rural women's self-management of arthritis

Assesses the relevance of self-management for rural women suffering arthritic conditions, by identifying factors that enabled or constrained their ability to self-manage, and by discerning differences between women in terms of their capacities to utilise self-management. A typology was developed identifying four different groups of rural women: unconstrained, passive, determined, and marginalised; therefore highlighting the ways in which different types of women are enabled or constrained in their self-management.

Experiences of the stolen generation : laws and inequalities

Examines the inequalities of the Aboriginal Australian and politics, government, history, legal status and the effects of Aboriginal institutions in Western Australia. The researcher found that the destruction and disappearance of documents, files and records greatly impacted the thesis.

Influence of disturbance on threatened fauna and associated habitat, Victoria

Results of fauna and vegetation surveys conducted around Portland Aluminium smelter between 1979 and 2004 found small mammal abundance and diversity had declined and changes in vegetation communities were related to changes in fire patterns, vegetation fragmentation and weed invasion. Small mammal numbers were greater in nearby National Parks.

Relative affordability

This research attempts to gauge the impact of "Melbourne 2030" policy on relative affordability within the Melbourne metropolitan area. Using price data over eight years, with reference to activity centre's and transport infrastructure. The results indicate this policy has, thus far, had little effect when measured at the suburb level.

Sisters : exploring a relationship

Explores women's perceptions of their relationships with their sisters. This research concludes that traditional patriarchal sociological models of the family do not capture the richness or depth of the relationship between sisters and models of women's friendships are more applicable in reaching an understanding of the full complexity of the relationship.

Reassesses the public career of James Ford Cairns and his impact on Australian society over the past 50 years. Particularly focuses upon the development of Cairns' thinking on social change and locates that development within the context of the Labor Party's ideological evolution since WWII.

Dream dolls : misogyny and political mythology in fin de siecle Australian culture

Examines Australian nationalism from the 1890s onwards through the interaction between cultural stereotypes of the feminine and issues of identity, citizenship and political constructions of "democracy". The employment of an idealised masculine aesthetic as catalyst to creating an imagined state was compared in Australia and Wilhelmine Germany.

Hypermasculinity in schools: the good, the bad and the ugly

Beneath the common-sense understandings that some boys are sporty and some are not lies a complex suite of identity positions. For those that manage to have their identity confirmed within the powerful sporting discourses that dominate the masculinity landscape, the path to peer acceptance is a clearer one. Conversely, for boys that have their identity diminished by these same discourses, the consequences can be quite dramatic. While physical and athletic prowess are clearly prominent vectors in this sorting process there is a range of other personal and social conditions that impact such trajectories. Built on narrative methodological approaches, this chapter draws on research conducted in a range of settings to describe some of the ways young males understand and enact sporting masculinities. Through a series of research narratives I present the voices of a number of young males as they navigate their identities within and against dominant sporting discourses. To help make sense of the identity practices contained within these narratives a theoretical leaning towards ambivalence will be engaged. Drawing on the work of Foucault, the formation of a masculine sporting identity can be understood as the development of a specific relationship with oneself and with others. Within this framework, sporting identities, like all other identities, are viewed as a process not a state.

Is this revolution being televised?

The thesis is a preliminary philosophical investigation into the effects of televisual screens in the lives of contemporary adolescents. It concludes and warns that for a growing cohort of these adolescents their behaviour/desires/lifestyles are being overdetermined in a deleterious manner by the effects of spending inordinate hours at these screens.

Nursing and justice as a basic human need

This paper explores the idea that justice is a basic human need akin to those famously depicted in Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs and, as such, warrants recognition as a core element in representative ideas about nursing. Early nurse theorists positioned the principles and practice of nursing as having their origins in ‘universal human needs’. The principle of deriving nursing care from human needs was thought to provide a guide not only for promoting health, but for preventing disease and illness. The nursing profession has had a longstanding commitment to social justice as a core professional value and ideal, obligating nurses to address the social conditions that undermine people’s health.The idea of justice as a universal human need per se and its possible relationship to people’s health outcomes has, however, not been considered. One reason for this is that justice in nursing discourse has more commonly been associated with law and ethics, and the legal and ethical responsibilities of nurses in relation to individualized patient care and, more recently, changing systems of care to improve health and health outcomes. Although this association is not incorrect, it is incomplete.A key aim of this paper is to redress this oversight and to encourage a broader conceptualization of justice as necessary for human survival, health and development, not merely as a professional value, or legal or ethical principle for guiding human conduct.
