Smart phones are everywhere, people are taking eBook readers on holiday, the iPad has queues of people wanting to buy one, and some netbooks can fit in a pocket. The technology is attractive and increasingly affordable – how can it help an individual in their access to and use of texts, journals, databases, clinical sources, the web and day-to-day information? The Library has been investigating and trialling mobile devices during 2010, and has received interesting feedback from staff and students on the effectiveness of the technology in the University and personal environments. Each device has its strengths and weaknesses depending on the needs of the individual or activity it is supporting – productivity, research, study, clinical or recreational. The presentation will explore these issues along with some of the practical implications at Deakin, and international experiences in academic environments.

1. Aquaculture is replacing capture fisheries in supplying the world with dietary protein. Although disease is a major threat to aquaculture production, the underlying global epidemiological patterns are unknown. 2. We analysed disease outbreak severity across different latitudes in a diverse range of aquaculture systems. 3. Disease at lower latitudes progresses more rapidly and results in higher cumulative mortality, in particular at early stages of development and in shellfish. 4. Tropical countries suffer proportionally greater losses in aquaculture during disease outbreaks and have less time to mitigate losses. 5. Synthesis and applications. Disease can present a major problem for food production and security in equatorial regions where fish and shellfish provide a major source of dietary protein. As the incidences of some infectious diseases may increase with climate change, adaptation strategies must consider global patterns in disease vulnerability of aquaculture and develop options to minimize impacts on food production.

Pre-B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most prevalent childhood malignancy and remains one of the highest causes of childhood mortality. Despite this, the mechanisms leading to disease remain poorly understood. We asked if recurrent aberrant DNA methylation plays a role in childhood ALL and have defined a genome-scale DNA methylation profile associated with the ETV6-RUNX1 subtype of pediatric ALL. Archival bone marrow smears from 19 children collected at diagnosis and remission were used to derive a disease specific DNA methylation profile. The gene signature was confirmed in an independent cohort of 86 patients. A further 163 patients were analyzed for DNA methylation of a three gene signature. We found that the DNA methylation signature at diagnosis was unique from remission. Fifteen loci were sufficient to discriminate leukemia from disease-free samples and purified CD34+ cells. DNA methylation of these loci was recurrent irrespective of cytogenetic subtype of pre-B cell ALL. We show that recurrent aberrant genomic methylation is a common feature of pre-B ALL, suggesting a shared pathway for disease development. By revealing new DNA methylation markers associated with disease, this study has identified putative targets for development of novel epigenetic-based therapies.
