Electrode materials are being developed to realise sodium-ion batteries that can provide energy storage solutions. Here, we develop amorphous carbon coated Na7Fe7(PO4)6F3, prepared by combining hydrothermal and solid state reaction methods, as an insertion electrode for sodium-ion batteries applications. Na7Fe7(PO4)6F3 particles are surrounded by a thin layer (∼1.5–2 nm) of amorphous carbon. The Na7Fe7(PO4)6F3/C composite cathode undergoes reversible sodium intercalation/de-intercalation with an average operational potential of ∼3.0 V (vs Na+/Na). This cathode has a capacity of 65 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1 current after 60 cycles and features twice higher capacity than that of an uncoated Na7Fe7(PO4)6F3 sample. Therefore, the carbon-coated Na7Fe7(PO4)6F3 composite presents feasible sodium intercalation/de-intercalation capacity, offering possibilities for developing a low cost, high performance sodium-ion battery positive electrode.

Nitrogen doped SnO2 polycrystalline nanostructures were produced from commercial SnO powders in a new system that combines a low-temperature plasma with heating. The method has the potential to improve the initial efficiency and the cycling performance of SnO2 anodes in Li-ion batteries. With this system, the temperature of the SnO to SnO2 conversion was lowered from 430 to 320 °C, up to 5 at% of doped nitrogen was detected and a nano-scale polycrystalline structure was observed in the product. Combining heat and low-pressure plasma is a promising approach for the production and treatment of enhanced energy storage materials.

Preparation of novel nanocomposite structure of ZnFe2O4-C is achieved by combining a sol-gel and a low energy ball milling method. The crucial feature of the composite's structure is that sol-gel synthesised ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles are dispersed and attached uniformly along the chains of Super P Li™ carbon black matrix by adopting a low energy ball milling. The composite ZnFe2O4-C electrodes are capable of delivering a very stable reversible capacity of 681 mAh g-1 (96% retention of the calculated theoretical capacity of ∼710 mAh g-1) at 0.1 C after 100 cycles with a remarkable Coulombic efficiency (82%) improvement in the first cycle. The rate capability of the composite is significantly improved and obtained capacity was as high as 702 at 0.1, 648 at 0.5, 582 at 1, 547 at 2 and 469 mAh g-1 at 4 C (2.85 A g-1), respectively. When cell is returned to 0.1 C, the capacity recovery was still ∼98%. Overall, the electrochemical performance (in terms of cycling stability, high rate capability, and capacity retention) is outstanding and much better than those of the related reported works. Therefore, our smart electrode design enables ZnFe2O4-C sample to be a high quality anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Replacing organic liquid electrolytes with solid electrolytes has led to a new perspective on batteries, enabling high-energy battery chemistry with intrinsically safe cell designs. However, most solid/gel electrolytes are easily deformed; under extreme deformation, leakage and/or short-circuiting can occur. Here, we report a novel magneto-rheological electrolyte (MR electrolyte) that responds to changes in an external magnetic field; the electrolyte exhibits low viscosity in the absence of a magnetic field and increased viscosity or a solid-like phase in the presence of a magnetic field. This change from a liquid to solid does not significantly change the conductivity of the MR electrolyte. This work introduces a new class of magnetically sensitive solid electrolytes that can enhance impact resistance and prevent leakage from electronic devices through reversible active switching of their mechanical properties.

Electrolytes based on bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI) with a range of LiFSI salt concentrations were characterized using physical property measurements, as well as NMR, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. Different from the behavior at lower concentrations, the FSI electrolyte containing 1 : 1 salt to IL mole ratio showed less deviation from the KCl line in the Walden plot, suggesting greater ionic dissociation. Diffusion measurements show higher mobility of lithium ions compared to the other ions, which suggests that the partial conductivity of Li(+) is higher at this higher composition. Changes in the FT-IR and Raman peaks indicate that the cis-FSI conformation is preferred with increasing Li salt concentration.

In this study, we investigated the effect of polymer architecture on the ion dynamics and local structure to understand the factors that might lead to the design of highly conductive and mechanically robust polyelectrolytes. Molecular dynamic simulations were undertaken on the sodium poly[(4-styrenesulfonyl) (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide] P(STFSINa) homopolymer and its copolymers with either ether or styrene spacer groups to investigate the spacer length and polarity dependence of Na-ion transport. Using a scaled charge model, we observed a continuous ion aggregate network in the homopolymer, which facilitates the fast ion dynamics despite the rigid polymer matrix. The longest spacer groups disrupt this percolating ionic network differently, with the ether group being more disruptive than the styrene group, and leading to more discrete ionic aggregates. The copolymer with the ether spacer was also found to result in an alternative Na-ion diffusion mechanism.

Electrochemical device with components having direct significance to biological life processes is a potent futuristic strategy for the realization of all-round green and sustainable development. We present here synthesis design, structural analysis and ion transport of a novel solid organic electrolyte (G7Li), a compound reminiscent of ion channels, derived from regioisomeric N7-guanine-carboxylate conjugate and Li-ions. G7Li, with it's in-built supply of Li(+)-ions, exhibited remarkably high lithium-ion transference number (= 0.75) and tunable room temperature ionic conductivity spanning three decades (≈10(-7) to 10(-3) Ω(-1) cm(-1)) as a function of moisture content. The ionic conductivity show a distinct reversible transition around 80-100 °C, from a dual Li(+) and H(+) (<100 °C) to a pure Li(+) conductor (>100 °C). Systematic studies reveal a transition from water-assisted Li-ion transport to Li hopping-like mechanism involving guanine-Li coordination. While as-synthesized G7Li has potential in humidity sensors, the anhydrous G7Li is attractive for rechargeable batteries.

Ionic liquids (ILs) form a novel class of electrolytes with unique properties that make them attractive candidates for electrochemical devices. In the present study a range of electrolytes were prepared based on the IL N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) amide ([C3mpyr][NTf2]) and LiNTf2 salt. The traditional organic solvent diluents vinylene carbonate (VC), ethylene carbonate (EC), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and toluene were used as additives at two concentrations, 10 and 20 mol%, leading to a ratio of about 0.6 and 1.3 diluent molecules to lithium ions, respectively. Most promisingly, the lithium ions see the greatest effect in the presence of all the diluents, except toluene, producing a lithium self-diffusion coefficient of almost a factor of 2.5 times greater for THF at 20 mol%. Raman spectroscopy subtly indicates that THF may be effectively breaking up a small portion of the lithium ion–anion interaction. While comparing the measured molar conductivity to that calculated from the self-diffusion coefficients of the constituents indicates that the diluents cause an increase in the overall ion clustering. This study importantly highlights that selective ion transport enhancement is achievable in these materials.

Lithium ion conducting ceramics based on the lithium aluminium titanium phosphate (LATP) NASICON structure have been prepared with various substitutions of the phosphorous. The effect of the processing method has been shown to be the key factor in determining the conductivity, both bulk and grain boundary, as well as the conductivity trends observed as a function of substitution.

The copolymerization of lithium 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonate (LiAMPS) with N,N ′-dimethylacrylamide has yielded polyelectrolyte systems which can be gelled with an ethylene carbonate/N ′,N ′-dimethylacetamide solvent mixture and show high ionic conductivities. 7Li linewidth and relaxation times as well as 1H NMR diffusion coefficients have been used to investigate the effect of copolymer composition as well as copolymer concentration in the gel electrolyte with respect to ionic transport and polyelectrolyte structure. It appears that ion association is likely even in the case of low lithium salt concentration; however a rapid exchange exists between the associated and non-associated lithium species. Beyond 0.2 M of LiAMPS, both the conductivity and solvent diffusion reach a plateau, whilst lithium ion linewidth and spin-spin relaxation are suggestive, on average, of a less mobile species. The thermal analysis data is also supportive of this association effectively leading to a form of phase separation on the nanoscale, which gives a lower overall activity of lithium ions in the solvent rich regions beyond about 0.2 M of LiAMPS, thereby leading to an increase in the final liquidus temperature of the binary liquid solvent from –9 to +5°C.

Nano-particle oxide fillers including TiO2, SiO2 and Al2O3 have previously been shown to have a significant affect on the properties of polymer electrolytes, especially those based on polyether–lithium salt systems. In some cases, conductivity increases of more than one order of magnitude have been reported in crystalline PEO-based complexes. In this work, we report on the effects of TiO2 on a completely amorphous polyether-based system to remove the complication of multiple phases presented by the semi-crystalline nature of PEO. Multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has shown that the lithium ion environment is changed by the addition of filler. Vibrational spectroscopy shows that the filler influences the disordered-longitudinal acoustic modes (DLAM) in the case of an amorphous polyether and suggests an interaction between the filler surface and the polymer. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy indicates an increase in free volume upon addition of filler to an amorphous polyether–salt complex, coinciding with an apparent increase in polymer mobility as determined from 1H T2 NMR measurements. Impedance spectroscopy has shown clear evidence of an inter-phase region that may be more or less conductive than the bulk polymer electrolyte itself. The data support a model which includes conduction through an interfacial region in addition to the bulk polymer

Investigations into the synthesis and utilisation of organic ionic plastic crystals have made significant progress in recent years, driven by a continued need for high conductivity solid state electrolytes for a range of electrochemical devices. There are a number of different aspects to research in this area; fundamental studies, utilising a wide range of analytical techniques, of both pure and doped plastic crystals, and the development of plastic crystal-based materials as electrolytes in, for example, lithium ion batteries. Progress in these areas is highlighted and the development of new organic ionic plastic crystals, including a new class of proton conductors, is discussed.

The ionic liquid, IL, dependence of the mid-point potential of the ferrocene|ferrocenium, Fc0/+, couple versus the decamethylferrocene|decamethylferrocenium, DmFc0/+, couple was studied in eleven ILs and in dichloromethane with added IL as the supporting electrolyte. The difference in mid-point potential between Fc and DmFc indicates that Fc0/+ couple is clearly dependent on the IL structure. A variation of about 0.100 V over the range of ILs studied under neat conditions and by ca. 0.050 V when studied in dichloromethane is reported. Meanwhile, a variable potential shift ranging from 0.014 to 0.082 V was observed when data was compared in these two systems (ILs vs. dichloromethane). The effect of water and lithium ion on the Fc0/+ and DmFc0/+ redox potential was also evaluated and found to be minimal.

Integrating rechargeable battery cells with fibre reinforced polymer matrix composites is a promising technology to enable composite structures to concurrently carry load and store electric energy, thus significantly reducing weight at the system level. To develop a design criterion for structural battery composites, rechargeable lithium polymer battery cells were embedded into carbon fibre/epoxy matrix composite laminates, which were then subjected to tensile, flexural and compressive loading. The electric charging/discharging properties were measured at varying levels of applied loads. The results showed that degradation in battery performance, such as voltagea and energy storage capacity, correlated well with the applied strain under three different loading conditions. Under compressive loading, battery cells, due to their multilayer construction, were unable to prevent buckling of composite face sheets due to the low lateral stiffness, leading to lower compressive strength that sandwich panels with foam core.
