The nose geometry of a hard and brittle metal cutting tool is generally modified in order to avoid the premature failure due to fracture under tensile stresses. While most research findings point to a favourable mechanical load pattern, the possible influence of the shape of the geometry on the thermal fields and the consequent changes in the stressed state of the tool seem to have attained less attention. The present work aims at establishing the thermal behaviour of bevelled tools under varying geometrical and process parameters. Data generated from statistically designed experiments and quick-stop chip samples are coupled to conduct numerical investigations using a mixed finite and boundary element solution to obtain the temperature distribution in bevelled carbide inserts. Due consideration is given to the presence of the stagnation zone and its size and shape. While the cutting forces and temperatures increased owing to the blunt shape of the tool, the possible absence of tensile stresses was found to be the likely effect of a more uniform temperature distribution resulting from a significant plastic contact on the principal flank and the consequent flank heat source. The characteristic low-temperature zones close to the nose of the conventional tool are taken over by the stagnation zone in bevelled tools. © IMechE 2007.

Changes in the metal-working industry, as a result of new environmental legislation or health and safety initiatives, creates the need for constant re-formulation of soluble cutting fluids. In order for there to be confidence in the product's ability to perform its required function successfully, there must be some clearly defined test methods for assessing machinability. Such a test methodology must provide comprehensive data on the fluid's lubrication and cooling properties, which are likely to occur in application. This paper describes the functions of soluble cutting fluids and discusses ways in which performance has been previously determined. Furthermore, it presents a new method for assessing machinability which is proposed as the basis for the development of a new and universal test protocol.

Due to the increasing unreliability of traditional port-based methods, Internet traffic classification has attracted a lot of research efforts in recent years. Quite a lot of previous papers have focused on using statistical characteristics as discriminators and applying machine learning techniques to classify the traffic flows. In this paper, we propose a novel machine learning based approach where the features are extracted from packet payload instead of flow statistics. Specifically, every flow is represented by a feature vector, in which each item indicates the occurrence of a particular token, i.e.; a common substring, in the payload. We have applied various machine learning algorithms to evaluate the idea and used different feature selection schemes to identify the critical tokens. Experimental result based on a real-world traffic data set shows that the approach can achieve high accuracy with low overhead.

In this paper, the single machine job shop scheduling problem is studied with the objectives of minimizing the tardiness and the material cost of jobs. The simultaneous consideration of these objectives is the multi-criteria optimization problem under study. A metaheuristic procedure based on simulated annealing is proposed to find the approximate Pareto optimal (non-dominated) solutions. The two objectives are combined in one composite utility function based on the decision maker’s interest in having a schedule with weighted combination. In view of the unknown nature of the weights for the defined objectives, a priori approach is applied to search for the non-dominated set of solutions based on the Pareto dominance. The obtained solutions set is presented to the decision maker to choose the best solution according to his preferences. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated in terms of the number of non-dominated schedules generated and the proximity of the obtained non-dominated front to the true Pareto front. Results show that the produced solutions do not differ significantly from the optimal solutions.

Ti-5553 is a relatively new titanium alloy with applications particularly in the aerospace industry for such key structural components as landing gear. However, during machining of Ti-5553, the elevated temperature and high strain at tool-workpiece interface may alter workpiece microstructure and result in ß to a phase transformation. During phase transformation, some intermediated phase such as w phase may form which is brittle and hard to machine, and it could reduce the fatigue life of machined components. The aim of this research work is to optimize the machining condition for Ti-5553, in which its hot deformation behavior in terms of ß to a phase transformation could be fully understood. Analysis of variables such as micrographs of phase components and cutting zone temperature demonstrates that the cutting temperature governs the formation of final phase components and to some extent this variation has been quantified to allow for further and more detailed investigation.

This paper presents an application of machine learning to the problem of classifying patients with glaucoma into one of two classes:stable and progressive glaucoma. The novelty of the work is the use of new features for the data analysis combined with machine learning techniques to classify the medical data. The paper describes the new features and the results of using decision trees to separate stable and progressive cases. Furthermore, we show the results of using an incremental learning algorithm for tracking stable and progressive cases over time. In both cases we used a dataset of progressive and stable glaucoma patients obtained from a glaucoma clinic.

Graph matching is an important class of methods in pattern recognition. Typically, a graph representing an unknown pattern is matched with a database of models. If the database of model graphs is large, an additional factor in induced into the overall complexity of the matching process. Various techniques for reducing the influence of this additional factor have been described in the literature. In this paper we propose to extract simple features from a graph and use them to eliminate candidate graphs from the database. The most powerful set of features and a decision tree useful for candidate elimination are found by means of the C4.5 algorithm, which was originally proposed for inductive learning of classication rules. Experimental results are reported demonstrating that effcient candidate elimination can be achieved by the proposed procedure.

Nodularised Ductile Cast Iron, when subjected to heat treatment processes - austenitising and austempering produces Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI). The microstructure of ADI also known as "ausferrite" consists of ferrite, austenite and graphite nodules. Machining ADI using conventional techniques is often a problematic issue due to the microstructural phase transformation from austenite to martensite during machining. This paper evaluates the wear characteristics of ultra hard cutting tools when machining ADI and its effect on machinability. Machining trials consist of turning ADI (ASTMGrade3) using two sets of PCBN tools with 90% and 50% CBN content and two sets of ceramics tools; Aluminium Oxide Titanium Carbide and Silicon Carbide - whisker reinforced Ceramic. The cutting parameters chosen are categorized as roughing and finishing conditions; the roughing condition comprises of constant cutting speed (425 m/min) and depth of cut (2mm) combined with variable feed rates of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4mm/rev. The finishing condition comprises of constant cutting speed (700 m/min) and depth of cut (0.5mm) combined with variable feed rates of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4mm/rev. The benchmark condition to evaluate the performance of the cutting tools was tool wear evaluation, surface texture analysis and cutting force analysis. The paper analyses thermal softening of the workpiece by the tool and its effect on the shearing mechanism under rough and finish machining conditions in term of lower cutting forces and enhanced surface texture of the machined part.

Sleep stage identification is the first step in modern sleep disorder diagnostics process. K-complex is an indicator for the sleep stage 2. However, due to the ambiguity of the translation of the medical standards into a computer-based procedure, reliability of automated K-complex detection from the EEG wave is still far from expectation. More specifically, there are some significant barriers to the research of automatic K-complex detection. First, there is no adequate description of K-complex that makes it difficult to develop automatic detection algorithm. Second, human experts only provided the label for whether a whole EEG segment contains K-complex or not, rather than individual labels for each subsegment. These barriers render most pattern recognition algorithms inapplicable in detecting K-complex. In this paper, we attempt to address these two challenges, by designing a new feature extraction method that can transform visual features of the EEG wave with any length into mathematical representation and proposing a hybrid-synergic machine learning method to build a K-complex classifier. The tenfold cross-validation results indicate that both the accuracy and the precision of this proposed model are at least as good as a human expert in K-complex detection.
