Though ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) are an excellent UV absorber, their photocatalytic activity greatly limits the application areas of these particles. Under sunlight exposure, ZnO NPs used as a UV absorber can accelerate the wool yellowing process by generating free radicals. To reduce this photocatalysis effect, a physical barrier has been fabricated by coating the ZnO NPs with a silica layer (ZnO@SiO2), hence providing good UV-shielding with low photocatalytic activity. The structure and optical properties of ZnO and ZnO@SiO2 NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and UV–Vis spectrum. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO and ZnO@SiO2 NPs was evaluated by photo-degradation of Rhodamine B. The ZnO and ZnO@SiO2 NPs were applied to knitted wool fabrics using the dip coating method. The treated wool fabrics were characterized by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the photoyellowing level of treated fabrics after exposure under simulated sunlight was evaluated by a Datacolor Spectraflash spectrophotometer. The ZnO@SiO2 NPs demonstrated excellent protection of wool against photoyellowing.

Surface modification of precipitated calcium carbonate particles (calcite) in a planetary ball mill using stearic acid as a modification agent for making dispersion in hydrocarbon oil was investigated. Different parameters for processing (milling) such as milling time, ball-to-sample ratio, and molar ratio of the reactant were varied and analyzed for optimization. The physical properties of the hydrophobically modified calcium carbonate particles were measured; the particle size and morphology of the resulting samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The surface coating thickness was estimated using small angle X-ray scattering. © 2014 American Coatings Association & Oil and Colour Chemists' Association.

A viable method of encapsulating block copolymer micelles inside vesicles using a conjugated polymer is reported in this study. Self-assembly and complexation between an amphiphilic block copolymer poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PMMA-b-PAA) and a rod-like conjugated polymer polyaniline (PANI) in aqueous solution were studied using transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and dynamic light scattering. The complexation and morphology transformation were driven by electrostatic interaction between PANI and the PAA block of the block copolymer. Addition of PANI to PMMA-b-PAA induced the morphology transformation from micelles to irregular vesicles through vesicles, thick-walled vesicles (TWVs) and multimicellar vesicles (MMVs). Among the observed morphologies, MMVs were observed for the first time. Morphology transformation was studied as a function of aniline/acrylic acid molar ratio ([ANI]/[AA]). Micelles were observed for the pure block copolymer, while vesicles and TWVs were observed at [ANI]/[AA] = 0.1 and 0.3, respectively. MMVs were observed at [ANI]/[AA] = 0.5 and irregular vesicles were observed for molar ratios at 0.7 and above. Clearly, a conjugated polymer like polyaniline can induce a morphology transformation even at its lower concentrations and produce complex morphologies.

In this work, optical sensing performance of tapered multimode fiber tip coated with graphene oxide (GO) nanostructured thin film towards aqueous ethanol with different concentrations is investigated. The tapering process of the optical fiber is done by a glass processing machine. The multimode optical fiber tip is dip-coated with GO and annealed at 70 °C to enhance the binding of the nanomaterials to the silica fiber. FESEM, Raman microscopy and XRD analyses are performed to micro-characterize the GO thin films. The morphology of the GO is observed to be in sheets forms. The reflectance response of the GO coated fiber tip is compared with the uncoated tip. The measurements are taken using a spectrophotometer in the optical wavelength range of 550-720 nm. The reflectance response of the GO coated fiber tip reduced proportionally, upon exposure to ethanol with concentration range of 5-80%. The dynamic response of the developed sensor showed strong reversibility and repeatability when it is exposed to ethanol with concentrations of 5%, 20% and 40% in distilled water. At room temperature, the sensor shows fast response and recovery as low as 19 and 25 s, respectively. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Morphology evolution in complexes of amphiphilic block copolymers poly(styrene)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) and poly(styrene)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) in the presence of polyaniline (PANI) in aqueous solution is reported. Transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and dynamic light scattering techniques were used to study the morphologies at various PANI contents [aniline]/[acrylic acid] ([ANI]/[AA]) ranging from 0.1 to 0.7. The interpolyelectrolyte complex formed between PAA and PANI plays a key role in the morphology transformation. Spherical micelles formed from pure block copolymers were transformed into large compound vesicles upon increasing PANI concentration due to internal block copolymer segregation. In addition to varying PANI content, the kinetic pathway of nanoparticle formation was controlled through different water addition methods and was critical in the formation of multigeometry nanoparticles.

In this work, we present the concept of planar polymer photonic waveguides for the health monitoring of aerospace structures. Here a polymer layer is deposited onto the material/structure to be monitored. Within the polymer layer, waveguides are created after deposition. These waveguides can then be used as 'optical fibres' for optical fibre sensing methodologies. In investigating the use of polymer photonic waveguides the question to be answered is: does the strain in the test material transfer to the polymer layer, such that the value to be measured optically is reliable and indicative of the true strain in the test structure? To answer this question we have conducted a preliminary structural analysis with finite element analysis, utilising ANSYS. A simple aluminium cantilever was used as the test structure, and layers of polyethylene with different thicknesses were added to this. Result show that the thinner the layer of polymer, the more accurate the measured strain will be. For a 100um coating, the difference is strain was observed to be on the order of 3.3%. © 2014 IEEE.

We determined the anticancer efficacy and internalization mechanism of our polymeric-ceramic nanoparticle system (calcium phosphate nanocores, enclosed in biodegradable polymers chitosan and alginate nanocapsules/nanocarriers [ACSC NCs]) loaded with iron-saturated bovine lactoferrin (Fe-bLf) in a breast cancer xenograft model. ACSC-Fe-bLf NCs with an overall size of 322±27.2 nm were synthesized. In vitro internalization and anticancer efficacy were evaluated in the MDA-MB-231 cells using multicellular tumor spheroids, CyQUANT and MTT assays. These NCs were orally delivered in a breast cancer xenograft mice model, and their internalization, cytotoxicity, biodistribution, and anticancer efficacy were evaluated. Chitosan-coated calcium phosphate Fe-bLf NCs effectively (59%, P≤0.005) internalized in a 1-hour period using clathrin-mediated endocytosis (P≤0.05) and energy-mediated pathways (P≤0.05) for internalization; 3.3 mg/mL of ACSC-Fe-bLf NCs completely disintegrated (~130-fold reduction, P≤0.0005) the tumor spheroids in 72 hours and 96 hours. The IC50 values determined for ACSC-Fe-bLf NCs were 1.69 mg/mL at 10 hours and 1.62 mg/mL after 20 hours. We found that Fe-bLf-NCs effectively (P≤0.05) decreased the tumor size (4.8-fold) compared to the void NCs diet and prevented tumor recurrence when compared to intraperitoneal injection of Taxol and Doxorubicin. Receptor gene expression and micro-RNA analysis confirmed upregulation of low-density lipoprotein receptor and transferrin receptor (liver, intestine, and brain). Several micro-RNAs responsible for iron metabolism upregulated with NCs were identified. Taken together, orally delivered Fe-bLf NCs offer enhanced antitumor activity in breast cancer by internalizing via low-density lipoprotein receptor and transferrin receptor and regulating the micro-RNA expression. These NCs also restored the body iron and calcium levels and increased the hematologic counts.

The surface of wool fabrics was coated with TiO2 and TiO2-based nanocomposite colloids and the impact of this coating on the photostability of wool was investigated. TiO2 along with TiO2/Metal and TiO2/Metal/SiO2 sols were synthesized through a low-temperature sol-gel method and applied to fabrics. Composite colloids were synthesized through integrating the silica and three noble metals of silver (Ag), gold (Au) and platinum (Pt) into the synthesis process of sols. Four different molar ratios of Metal to TiO2 (0.01%, 0.1%, 0.5% and 1%) were used to elucidate the role of metal type and amount on the obtained features. Photostability and UV protection features of fabrics were evaluated through measuring the photo-induced chemiluminescence (PICL), photoyellowing rate and ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of fabrics. PICL and photoyellowing tests were carried out under UVA and UVC light sources, respectively. PICL profiles demonstrated that the presence of pure and modified TiO2 nanoparticles on fabrics reduced the intensity of PICL peak indicating a lower amount of polymer free radicals in coated wool, compared to that of pristine fabric. Moreover, a higher PICL peak intensity as well as photoyellowing rate was observed on fabrics coated with modified colloids in comparison with pure TiO2. The surface morphology of fabrics was further characterized using FESEM images.

The disbondment of protective organic coatings under excessive cathodic protection potentials is a widely reported coating failure mechanism. Traditional methods of evaluating cathodic disbondment are based on ex situ visual inspection of coated metal surfaces after being exposed to standard cathodic disbondment testing conditions for a long period of time. Although electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been employed as an effective means of evaluating various anti-corrosion properties of organic coatings; its application for assessing the cathodic disbondment resistance of coatings has not been sufficiently exploited. This paper reports an experimental study aimed at developing EIS into a tool for in situ measurement and monitoring of cathodic disbondment of coatings. A clear correlation between EIS parameters and the disbonded coating areas has been confirmed upon short term exposure of epoxy-coated steel electrodes to cathodic disbondment conditions; however the degree of this correlation was found to decrease with the extension of exposure duration. This observation suggests that EIS loses its sensitivity with the propagation of coating disbondment, and that in order to achieve quantitative determination of the coating cathodic disbondment localized EIS measurements are required to measure the parameters related to local disbonded areas.

Novel cisplatin (CDDP)-loaded, polypeptide-based vesicles for the targeted delivery of cisplatin to cancer cells have been prepared. These vesicles were formed from biocompatible and biodegradable maleimide-poly(ethylene oxide)114-b-poly(L-glutamic acid)12 (Mal-PEG114-b-PLG12) block copolymers upon conjugation with the drug itself. CDDP conjugation forms a short, rigid, cross-linked, drug-loaded, hydrophobic block in the copolymer, and subsequently induces self-assembly into hollow vesicle structures with average hydrodynamic diameters (Dh) of ∼ 270 nm. CDDP conjugation is critical to the formation of the vesicles. The reactive maleimide-PEG moieties that form the corona and inner layer of the vesicles were protected via formation of a reversible Diels-Alder (DA) adduct throughout the block copolymer synthesis so as to maintain their integrity. Drug release studies demonstrated a low and sustained drug release profile in systemic conditions (pH = 7.4, [Cl(-)] = 140 mM) with a higher "burst-like" release rate being observed under late endosomal/lysosomal conditions (pH = 5.2, [Cl(-)] = 35 mM). Further, the peripheral maleimide functionalities on the vesicle corona were conjugated to thiol-functionalized folic acid (FA) (via in situ reduction of a novel bis-FA disulfide, FA-SS-FA) to form an active targeting drug delivery system. These targeting vesicles exhibited significantly higher cellular binding/uptake into and dose-dependent cytotoxicity toward cancer cells (HeLa) compared to noncancerous cells (NIH-3T3), which show high and low folic acid receptor (FR) expression, respectively. This work thus demonstrates a novel approach to polypeptide-based vesicle assembly and a promising strategy for targeted, effective CDDP anticancer drug delivery.

Flexible sensors capable of detecting large strain are very useful for health monitoring and sport applications. Here a strain sensor is prepared by applying a thin layer of conducting polymer, polypyrrole (PPy), onto the fiber surface of an elastic fibrous membrane, electrospun polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The sensor shows a normal monotonic resistance response to strain in the range of 0–50%, but the response becomes “on-off switching” mode when the strain is between 100 and 200%. Both response modes are reversible and can work repeatedly for many cycles. This unique sensing behavior is attributed to overstretching of the polypyrrole coating, unique fibrous structure, and elasticity of PDMS fibers. It may be useful for monitoring the states where motions are only allowed in a particular range such as joint rehabilitation.

In this approach, polyelectrolyte film-coated nanofibrous silk fibroin (SF) nonwovens were prepared from the alternate deposition of positively charged polyethylenimine (PEI) and negatively charged SF using electrostatic layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled technology. The composite membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. The SF-PEI multilayer-assembled nanofibers (less than five layers) were fine and uniform with the fiber diameter from 400 nm to 600 nm, and had very large surface area and high porosity (more than 70%). The amino groups of PEI were proved to be deposited onto SF nonwovens, which granted the coated nonwovens with potential applicability for copper ions adsorption. The PEI films coated SF substrate showed much higher copper ions adsorption capacity than that of ethanol treated SF nanofibers. Adding the number of PEI coated could enhance the Cu2+ adsorption capacity significantly. The maximum milligrams per gram of copper ions adsorbed reached 59.7 mg/g when the SF substrate was coated with 5 bilayers of SF-PEI. However, the copper ions adsorption capacity had no obvious change as the number of PEI continued to increase. These results suggest potential for PEL film-coated nanofibrous nonwovens as a new adsorbent for metal ions.

The extracellular microenvironment in bone marrow (BM) is known to regulate the growth and differentiation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC). We have developed cell-free matrices from a BM stromal cell line (HS-5), which can be used as substrates either in native form or as tissue engineered coatings, for the enhanced ex vivo expansion of umbilical cord blood (UCB) derived HSPC. The physicochemical properties (surface roughness, thickness, and uniformity) of native and spin coated acellular matrices (ACM) were studied using scanning and atomic force microscopy (SEM and AFM). Lineage-specific expansion of HSPC, grown on these substrates, was evaluated by immunophenotypic (flow cytometry) and functional (colony forming) assays. Our results show that the most efficient expansion of lineage-specific HSPC occurred on spin coated ACM. Our method provides an improved protocol for ex vivo HSPC expansion and it offers a system to study the in vivo roles of specific molecules in the hematopoietic niche that influence HSPC expansion.
