In this chapter, we will look at the application of personality to social problems and personal growth.  we have chosen two examples of social problems, anger (and aggression) and crime, to illustrate areas where personality has had an impact.

Crisis and triage clinicians' attitudes toward working with people with personality disorder

PURPOSE. This study aimed to investigate the attitudes of Australian psychiatric triage and crisis clinicians toward those with a diagnosis of personality disorder.
DESIGN AND METHODS. The design of the study was exploratory descriptive research. The study employed a survey method using Bowers and Allan's (2006) Attitude to Personality Disorder Questionnaire, which was designed to identify global attitudes toward those with a diagnosis of personality disorder.
FINDINGS. The findings of this study indicate that psychiatric crisis and triage clinicians hold negative attitudes toward those with a diagnosis of personality disorder.
PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS. Education and clinical supervision is required to address negative clinician attitudes.

Re-considering Type A personality as a risk factor for angina: interactions with perceived effort-reward imbalance at work

This study investigates the role of Type A personality in the effort-reward imbalance (ERI) model (n=899 operational police). Moderated multiple regression analyses, including tests for curvilinear effects, revealed that the model significantly predicted self-reported angina. Two interactions between Type A subscales and the effort-reward imbalance variables were significant. The findings support recent arguments that the pathogenic component of Type A is hostility, and suggest that both overt and covert hostility can have differential effects on employee perceptions of effort-reward imbalance.

Online communication of brand personality : a study of MBA programs of top business schools

Brand personality has often been considered from the perspective of products, corporate brands or countries, but rarely among service offerings. Moreover, there remains the consideration of how these entities are communicated online. This article explores the brand personality dimensions that business schools communicate and whether they differ in putting across clear and distinctive brand personalities in cyberspace. Three clusters from the Financial Times' top 100 full-time global MBA programs in 2005 are used to undertake a combination of computerised content and correspondence analyses. The content analysis was structured using Aaker's five-dimensional framework whilst the positioning maps were produced by examining the data using correspondence analysis. Results indicate that some schools have clear brand personalities while others fail to communicate their brand personalities in a distinct way. This study also illustrates a powerful, but simple and relatively inexpensive way for organisations and brand researchers to study the brand personalities actually being communicated.

The impact of violent video-games on cognition, affect and personality

This research investigated the impact of playing violent videogames. Aggressive or anxious responses were most likely: when the player perceived the violence in the games to be extreme, when the player experienced a heightened sense of becoming 'absorbed' into the game, and during a relatively brief exposure to the game. The portfolio explores the use of manualised interventions in psychology research and practice. Four illustrative case studies regarding the efficacy and effectiveness of adapting manualised interventions for clients with chronic health conditions are presented.

Perceptions and personality : a viewer-centred approach to film violence research

This thesis took a viewer-centred approach to the study of media violence. The findings indicated that viewer perceptions and personality mediate the affective, cognitive and arousal responses of viewers. The importance of the viewer perception and personality examined in this thesis also differed as a function of gender and age. The portfolio focused on the current Victorian correctional system's response to, and attempts to rehabilitate, convicted sexual offenders. It presents four case studies to demonstrate how the Victorian Sexual Offender Treatment Program attempts to apply empirically validated "best practice" principles of offender rehabilitation.

Cognitive ability and FFM personality predictors of military training performance

This study demonstrated the validity of the Five-Factor Model (FFM) of personality trait domains over a measure of general cognitive ability in predicting training performance among military trainees. The results provide support to the growing consensus on the superiority of the FFM traits in predicting criteria on practical importance.

Utility of personality assessment in child and adolescent mental health

This professional portfolio uses four case studies to demonstrate the utility of personality assessment in the practice of clinical psychology within a Child and Adolescent Mental (CAMHS) service, most notably in aiding clinical practice regarding diagnosis, case formulation and treatment.
