Each museum development presents complex and unique challenges. In particular, the Kelabit Highland Community Museum Development Project (KHCMDP) is a museum development that requires both discipline-specific and interdisciplinary collaboration to reach the common goal of the preservation and conservation of the fragile Kelabit heritage. Still in its infancy, however rich with potential, the engagement required to realize the development of this community-based museum, in the remote region of Bario in the Highlands of Borneo, offers a stimulating environment in which both discipline specific and creative interdisciplinary thinking are utilized to create a suitable and sustainable development. This paper will describe the process of extensive community consultation required by the interdisciplinary team of academics to address the areas of curatorial policies, preservation and conservation, the design of the built environment and the creation of the communication strategies for the project. It demonstrates the unique opportunity for diverse tertiary disciplines at Deakin University to further develop their knowledge of museology, preservation, identity creation and issues of representation and communication from an interdisciplinary perspective. Within each of the areas of concern, the interconnecting nature of the project has resulted in a strong intersection of each of the normally separate professional departments. Furthermore, adding to the complexity, this case study is a multi-disciplined research opportunity situated in a cross-cultural context.

Impaired mitochondrial function is fundamental feature of heart failure (HF) and myocardial ischemia. In addition to the effects of heightened oxidative stress, altered nitric oxide (NO) metabolism, generated by a mitochondrial NO synthase, has also been proposed to impact upon mitochondrial function. However, the mechanism responsible for arginine transport into mitochondria and the effect of HF on such a process is unknown. We therefore aimed to characterize mitochondrial L-arginine transport and to investigate the hypothesis that impaired mitochondrial L-arginine transport plays a key role in the pathogenesis of heart failure and myocardial injury.

 The project has exploited an Australian marsupial, tammar wallaby, as an experimental model to understand lung development. This research has focused on identifying the factors that regulate lung development and to develop new intervention therapies to improve health outcomes in human premature and low birth weight babies.

Carbon Nexus, the new cutting-edge open-access carbon fiber and composites research facility at Deakin University, recently commenced operations. The two carbon fiber processing lines are allowing researchers to investigate new methods for manufacturing carbon fiber which can lower energy inputs, maximise output, and increase fiber performance. The lines are also enabling industrial partners to validate new technologies at industrial scale. With a focused research program driven by a cross-functional research team, Carbon Nexus aims to reduce the cost of producing carbon fiber and increase the rate of manufacturing composite parts.

Abstract In this paper, a generalized model of hematopoiesis with delays and impulses isconsidered. By employing the contraction mapping principle and a novel type of impulsivedelay inequality, we prove the existence of a unique positive almost periodic solution of themodel. It is also proved that, under the proposed conditions in this paper, the unique positivealmost periodic solution is globally exponentially attractive. A numerical example is givento illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.

The emergence of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza has caused a heavy socio-economic burden through culling of poultry to minimise human and livestock infection. Although human infections with H5N1 have to date been limited, concerns for the pandemic potential of this zoonotic virus have been greatly intensified following experimental evidence of aerosol transmission of H5N1 viruses in a mammalian infection model. In this review, we discuss the dominance of the haemagglutinin cleavage site motif as a pathogenicity determinant, the host-pathogen molecular interactions driving cleavage activation, reverse genetics manipulations and identification of residues key to haemagglutinin cleavage site functionality and the mechanisms of cell and tissue damage during H5N1 infection. We specifically focus on the disease in chickens, as it is in this species that high pathogenicity frequently evolves and from which transmission to the human population occurs. With >75% of emerging infectious diseases being of zoonotic origin, it is necessary to understand pathogenesis in the primary host to explain spillover events into the human population.

Adolescent depressed mood is related to the development of subsequent mental health problems, and family problems have been linked to adolescent depression. Longitudinal research on adolescent depressed mood is needed to establish the unique impact of family problems independent of other potential drivers. This study tested the extent to which family conflict exacerbates depressed mood during adolescence, independent of changes in depressed mood over time, academic performance, bullying victimization, negative cognitive style, and gender. Students (13 years old) participated in a three-wave bi-national study (n = 961 from the State of Washington, United States, n = 981 from Victoria, Australia; 98 % retention, 51 % female in each sample). The model was cross-lagged and controlled for the autocorrelation of depressed mood, negative cognitive style, academic failure, and bullying victimization. Family conflict partially predicted changes in depressed mood independent of changes in depressed mood over time and the other controls. There was also evidence that family conflict and adolescent depressed mood are reciprocally related over time. The findings were closely replicated across the two samples. The study identifies potential points of intervention to interrupt the progression of depressed mood in early to middle adolescence.

Atomically thin boron nitride (BN) is an important 2D nanomaterial, with many properties distinct from graphene. In this feature article, these unique properties and associated applications, often not feasible with graphene, are outlined. The article starts with characterization and identification of atomically thin BN. It is followed by demonstrating their strong oxidation resistance at high temperatures and applications in protecting metals from oxidation and corrosion. As flat insulators, BN nanosheets are ideal dielectric substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and electronic devices based on 2D heterostructures. The light emission of BN nanosheets in the deep ultraviolet (DUV) and ultraviolet (UV) regions is also included for its scientific and technological importance. The last part is dedicated to synthesis, characterization, and optical properties of BN nanoribbons, a special form of nanosheets.

 The pathogenicity of highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) is highly dependent on the presence of a polybasic haemagglutinin cleavage site (HACS) motif. This study demonstrated that HPAIV replication in chickens occurs primarily in vascular endothelium and is modulated by the molecular composition of the HACS motif.
