 A macroscopic ductile fracture criterion is proposed based on micro-mechanism analysis of nucleation, growth and shear coalescence of voids from experimental observation of fracture surfaces. The proposed ductile fracture model endows a changeable cut-off value for the stress triaxiality to represent effect of micro-structures, the Lode parameter, temperature, and strain rate on ductility of metals. The proposed model is used to construct fracture loci of AA 2024- T351. The constructed fracture loci are compared with experimental data covering wide stress triaxiality ranging between –0.5 and 1.0. The comparison suggests that the proposed model can provide a satisfactory prediction of ductile fracture for metals from compressive upsetting tests to plane strain tension with slanted fracture surfaces. Moreover, it is expected that the proposed model reasonably describes ductile fracture behavior in high velocity perforation simulation since a reasonable cut-off value for the stress triaxiality is coupled with the proposed ductile fracture criterion.

Truss core laminates display stiffness and strength/density ratios superior to those seen in foam cored laminates. However, this superiority is held only for ideal shaped struts. If the truss core is damaged, its performance rapidly decreases towards that of a foam. The present study investigates the stiffness and strength degradation with imposed core deformation/damage. This is done for a pyramidal core structure made by electro-discharge machining from AA5083 alloy. The experiments are compared with finite element predictions. The effect of the strain rate sensitivity is studied by performing the tests at different temperatures and by FE simulations with different material data sets. The results show reasonable agreement between experiments and modeling. The stiffness of a damaged truss core rapidly degrades and reaches the performance levels seen in foams after ≈8% of deformation. The results show that a high strain rate sensitivity significantly influences post-buckling core behavior and is able to decrease the stiffness and strength degradation rate.

The effect of deformation parameters on the flow behavior of a Ti6Al4V alloy has been studied to understand the deformation mechanisms during hot compression. Cylindrical samples with partially equiaxed grains were deformed in the α+β phase region at different thermo-mechanical conditions. To develop components with tailored properties, the physically based Estrin and Mecking (EM) model for the work hardening/dynamic recovery combined with the Avrami equation for dynamic recrystallization was used to predict the flow stress at varying process conditions. The EM model revealed good predictability up to the peak strain, however, at strain rates below 0.01s-1, a higher B value was observed due to the reduced density of dislocation tangles. In contrast, the flow softening model revealed higher value of constants a and b at high strain rates due to the reduction in the volume fraction of dynamic recrystallization and larger peak strain. The predicted flow stress using the combined EM+Avrami model revealed good agreement with the measured flow stress resulted in very low average absolute relative error value. The microstructural analysis of the samples suggests the formation of coarse equiaxed grains together with the increased β phase fraction at low strain rate leads to a higher flow softening.

The effect of strain rate and strain on the hot compression behavior of Ti6Al4V has been analysed to understand the microstructural evolution and restoration behavior. Cylindrical samples with partially equiaxed grains were deformed in the α+β region at different thermo-mechanical conditions. EBSD has been used to study the microstructural evolution and the flow softening mechanisms. The microstructural evolution showed a complex restoration behaviour, where both fragmentation and nucleation of new grains have been observed. The volume fraction of the equiaxed grains increased with an increase in the strain, but decreased with the strain rate. At the same time, the average grain size of the equiaxed grains decreased with an increase in both the strain and strain rate. The measured activation energy for deformation revealed a good agreement with reported values in the literature.

This chapter investigates two important processing methods, such as welding and machine of duplex stainless steel. The welding process welding generally degrades the properties of these materials by redistributing the phases during melting and solidification. On the other hand, the redistribution during machining mainly take place combined effect of stress, strain rate and temperature. Mechanism of machining process and several welding methods has been analysed in details. It was found that outcomes of welding processes depend on the welding methods. Most of the cases an appropriate annealing process can be used to restore the expected properties of the weld joints though the parameters of annealing process are different in different welding methods. Nonmetallic inclusions and the low carbon content of duplex stainless steel reduce the machinability of duplex stainless steel. SEM and optical microscopic details of the frozen cutting zone and chips revealed that the harder austenite phase dissipates in the advancement of the cutting tool, being effectively squeezed out of the softer ferrite phase. Abrasion and adhesion were the most common wear modes developed on the flank and rake faces. Adhesion wear being the most prevalent on the flank face, appeared to be initiated by built-up edge formation.

Excellent superplastic elongations (in excess of 1,200%) were achieved in a commercial cast AZ31 alloy processed by low temperature equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) with a back-pressure to produce a bimodal grain structure. In contrast, AZ31 alloy processed by ECAP at temperatures higher than 200 °C showed a reasonably uniform grain structure and relatively low ductility. It is suggested that a bimodal grain structure is advantageous because the larger grains contribute to strain hardening thus delaying the onset of necking, while grain boundary sliding associated with small grains provides a stabilizing effect due to enhanced strain rate sensitivity. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

The evolution of hot working flow stress with strain is examined in torsion, uniaxial compression and channel die compression. The flow stress was found to be strongly dependent on texture and deformation mode. At low strains this dependency accounted for a difference in flow stress of up to a factor of two. At higher strains the influence of texture and deformation mode was less marked. The stresses corresponding to an equivalent strain of 0.5 were modelled using a power law expression with an activation energy of 147 kJ/mol and a strain rate exponent of 0.15. The influence of texture and deformation mode on flow stress is rationalised in terms of the influence of prismatic slip, twinning and dynamic recrystallisation on deformation stress and structure.

A general relationship between the kinetics of dynamic and static recrystallization is developed. It is predicted that conventional dynamic recrystallization will occur whenever the deformation time exceeds the adjusted start time for static recrystallization. This approach is verified using data for austenite and lead. It is then applied to current and previous work on ferrite. The model provides support for the contention that conventional dynamic recrystallization occurs in low carbon ferrite if deformation is carried out at high temperatures and low strain rates. In the present work, which was carried out at 700 °C, evidence for dynamic recrystallization was observed for strain rates less than around 0.01 s−1. At higher strain rates, the model predicts a critical strain for the onset of dynamic recrystallization that exceeds the critical strain for the beginning of the recovery steady-state region. While the model allows dynamic recrystallization to begin in this region, the critical strain for its onset is expected to increase rapidly with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature once steady state has been reached.

A series of hot-compression tests and Taylor-model simulations were carried out with the intention of developing a simple expression for the proof stress of magnesium alloy AZ31 during hot working. A crude approximation of wrought textures as a mixture of a single ideal texture component and a random background was employed. The shears carried by each deformation system were calculated using a full-constraint Taylor model for a selection of ideal orientations as well as for random textures. These shears, in combination with the measured proof stresses, were employed to estimate the critical resolved shear stresses for basal slip, prismatic slip, ⟨c+a⟩ second-order pyramidal slip, and { } twinning. The model thus established provides a semianalytical estimation of the proof stress (a one-off Taylor simulation is required) and also indicates whether or not twinning is expected. The approach is valid for temperatures between ∼150 °C and ∼450 °C, depending on the texture, strain rate, and strain path.

The microstructural evolution during compression (at 350°C and a strain rate of 0.01s-1) was examined for magnesium alloy AZ31 received in the "as-cast" condition. It was revealed that at low strains, many twins are produced and dynamically recrystallized (DRX) grains form as a necklace along pre-existing grain boundaries. At higher strains, DRX stagnates, most likely due to the accommodation of deformation in the DRX fraction of the material. It was also observed that twin boundaries act as sites for the nucleation of DRX grains. The analysis was repeated for samples pre-compressed to a strain of 0.15 at room temperature prior to the hot deformation step. The idea of these additional tests was to increase the degree of twinning and therefore the density of sites for the nucleation of DRX. It was found that statically recrystallized (SRX) grains developed at the twins during heating to the test temperature. When these samples were deformed, the peak flow stress was reduced by approximately 20% and the development of DRX was enhanced. This can be attributed to the accelerated nucleation of DRX in the refined SRX structure.

The shearing behavior of a drawing-steel and aluminum alloy were investigated using hardness contours of partially deformed samples and a finite element model of the trimming process. Results showed that the stress and strain distributions within the work-piece were more strongly dependent on the punch penetration than the material properties of the work-piece. Differences in the final fracture surface profile and burr formation of the drawing-steel and aluminum alloy were a consequence of the shape of the stress and strain distribution when the crack in the sample became unstable, not when it was initiated. Results and existing literature suggest that a correlation may exist between the strain-rate sensitivity of the work-piece material and the burr mechanism and fracture surface profile of the trimmed part.

High purity Al single crystals of the (011)[011] orientation have been deformed in plane strain compression in a channel die. Deformation was carried out at a strain rate of 0.01 s−1 to true strains of 0.5 and 1.0, and at temperatures of 25, 200 and 300 °C. The as-deformed microstructure has been characterized using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). No recrystallization was detected after deformation, and the deformation texture analysis showed that the stability of the orientation decreased with increasing temperature, contrary to reports for other orientations.

Annealing was carried out for various times at 300 °C. Nucleation of recrystallization exhibited periodicity, with distinct bands of recrystallized grains forming parallel to the transverse direction. This recrystallized microstructure has been examined using EBSD. A model is proposed to account for the origin of the periodicity of nucleation and the retention of rods or cylinders of unrecrystallized material after significant annealing times.

A mathematical model has been developed which describes the hot deformation and recrystallization behavior of austenite using a single internal variable: dislocation density. The dislocation density is incorporated into equations describing the rate of recovery and recrystallization. In each case no distinction is made between static and dynamic events, and the model is able to simulate multideformation processes. The model is statistically based and tracks individual populations of the dislocation density during the work-hardening and softening phases. After tuning using available data the model gave an accurate prediction of the stress–strain behavior and the static recrystallization kinetics for C–Mn steels. The model correctly predicted the sensitivity of the post deformation recrystallization behavior to process variables such as strain, strain rate and temperature, even though data for this were not explicitly incorporated in the tuning data set. In particular, the post dynamic recrystallization (generally termed metadynamic recrystallization) was shown to be largely independent of strain and temperature, but a strong function of strain rate, as observed in published experimental work.

Microstructure and deformation behavior of the commercial aluminum-based Al7.5%Zn–2.7%Mg–2.3%Cu–0.15%Zr alloy subjected to high pressure torsion (HPT) were studied in the present work. A small grain size less than 100 nm, high level of internal stresses and presence of second phase nanoparticles were revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The nanostructured alloy processed by HPT exhibits tensile strength of 800 MPa and ductility of 20% at optimal temperature-strain rate conditions. Unusual influence of a short pre-annealing on tensile strength and ductility of as-processed alloy is discussed.

Laser shock peening (LSP) is an innovative surface treatment technique for metal alloys, with the great improvement of their fatigue, corrosion and wear resistance performance. Finite element method has been widely applied to simulate the LSP to provide the theoretically predictive assessment and optimally parametric design. In the current work, 3-D numerical modelling approaches, combining the explicit dynamic analysis, static equilibrium analysis algorithms and different plasticity models for the high strain rate exceeding 106s-1, are further developed. To verify the proposed methods, 3-D static and dynamic FEA of AA7075-T7351 rods subject to two-sided laser shock peening are performed using the FEA package–ABAQUS. The dynamic and residual stress fields, shock wave propagation and surface deformation of the treated metal from different material modelling approaches have a good agreement.
