We present a facile and effective method for controlling the surface hydrophobicity of polyimide films from sticky to superhydrophobic properties by tailoring their topographies. Nanostructured silver layers were produced on polyimide films by treatment with aqueous KOH and AgNO3, followed by thermal treatment at 200 degrees C or higher temperatures. Further modification of the gold-coated silver layers with n-dodecanethiol led to hydrophobic surfaces. Different morphologies of the silver layers at the micro- and nano-meter scales, which result in the variety of hydrophobicity, can be tailored by controlling the thermal treatment temperature. Surfaces prepared at 320 degrees C showed a sticky property that water drops did not slide off even when the sample was held upside down. Superhydrophobic surfaces were obtained when the temperature was above 340 degrees C. A remarkable superhydrophobicity, as evidenced by a very large water contact angle of 162 degrees and a very small sliding angle of 7 degrees, was achieved by heating the modified polyimide films at 360 degrees C. This is also the first example for superhydrophobic modification of polyimide films.

The first continuous flow micro PCR introduced in 1998 has attracted considerable attention for the past several years because of its ability to amplify DNA at much faster rate than the conventional PCR and micro chamber PCR method. The amplification is obtained by moving the sample through 3 different fixed temperature zones. In this paper, the thermal behavior of a continuous flow PCR chip is studied using commercially available finite element software. We study the temperature uniformity and temperature gradient on the chip’s top surface, the cover plate and the interface of the two layers. The material for the chip body and cover plate is glass. The duration for the PCR chip to achieve equilibrium temperature is also studied.

Most statistical procedures regarding the mean or median may only give valid results when particular conditions about the shape of the data are met. An alternative test is presented in this thesis that does not require certain data shapes but can perform as well or better than the existing tests.

This thesis, using a computer simulation, studies the effect of the normal distribution assumption on the power of several many-sample location and scale test procedures. It also suggests an almost robust parametric test, namely numerical likelihood ratio test (NLRT) for non-normal situations. The NLRT is found better than all of the tests considered. Some real life data sets were used as examples.

The prevalence, course and predictors of chronic child maltreatment were investigated. The majority of children referred experienced chronic child maltreatment. The characteristics of families and maltreatment were more similar than different for chronic and isolated child maltreatment. The type of response provided by child protection services differentiated chronic and isolated maltreatment.

The present study has examined the thermodynamics of MgAl2O4 and MgO formations in Al–Mg alloy/quartz (>99% crystalline silica) through differential thermal analysis (DTA). The formation of MgAl2O4 and MgO is detected as exothermic peaks in the heat flow curve and the reaction is confirmed by the Si dissolution peaks observed during the reheating of samples and SEM analysis of the reacted sample. The presence of MgAl2O4 and MgO is confirmed in the XRD analysis of the reacted sample. The study has enabled the production of nano sized MgAl2O4 and MgO crystals at the interface of Al–Mg alloy and quartz. The reaction between them is found to be influenced by the oxidation of Mg, which is reduced by increasing heating rates.

Greenhouse heating costs for some commercial growers in southern Australia are now a significant production cost. This is particularly the case for those operators who installed heating systems using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) when this fuel was relatively inexpensive. Heat pump systems used in various configurations have been suggested as an option for reducing energy use and costs for greenhouse heating, particularly if off-peak electricity is used. This paper investigates the financial and environmental viability of an air-to-water heat pump system for a 4000 m2 greenhouse, located 120 km north of Melbourne, Victoria. The simulation software, TRNSYS, was used to predict the performance of the system. The heat pump system was found to have a simple payback period of approximately six years and reduce LPG consumption by 16%. Greenhouse gas emissions were 3% higher using the heat pump system, compared to the existing LPG boiler.

Marsupial neonates are born without a fully functioning immune system, and are known to be protected in part by natural antimicrobial peptides present in their mother's milk. Monotreme neonates hatch at a similar stage in development, and it has been hypothesised that their survival in a non-sterile burrow also relies on the presence of natural antibiotics in their mother's milk. Here we review the field of monotreme lactation and the antimicrobial peptide complement of the platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus). Using reverse transcriptasepolymerase chain reaction of milk cell RNA from a sample of platypus milk, we found no evidence for the expression of cathelicidins or defensins in the milk. This was unexpected. We hypothesise that these natural antibiotics may instead be produced by the young platypuses themselves.

The bond strength of various metal multilayers produced by cold rolling of metal foils with different thermal conductivity was investigated. Results indicated that under the same conditions of deformation and surface preparation, the metallic multilayer system with low thermal conductivity exhibited relative high bond strength while high thermal conductivity metal system may fail to be roll-bonded together. The relationship between the deformation-induced localized heating and the bond strength were discussed. The deformation-induced localized heating in the low thermal conductivity metal multilayer systems may provide opportunities for achieving a successful accumulative roll bonding or a “cold roll/heat treatment/cold roll” process to synthesize metallic multilayer materials.

Aims To examine the self-reported personal wellbeing of a sample of Australian injecting drug users (IDU) using a standardized instrument and determine the key correlates of variations in self-reported personal wellbeing.

Design, setting and participants Cross-sectional survey of 881 Australian IDU.

Measurements
Self-reported personal wellbeing collected using the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI).

Findings IDU scored significantly lower than the general Australian population on the PWI and all subscales. Lower PWI scores were associated with a range of socio-demographic, drug use and other health and social characteristics. Across all PWI subscales, lower personal wellbeing scores were associated with unemployment, past 6-month mental health problems and more frequent injecting (all P < 0.05).

Conclusions The PWI is sufficiently sensitive to distinguish between IDU and the general population, and to identify key correlates of PWI among IDU. Some domains canvassed within the scale, such as health, standard of living and life achievements, are well within the scope of current intervention strategies, such as pharmacotherapy maintenance treatment and housing and employment support services. This suggests that the PWI could be useful in clinical settings by allowing structured identification of the areas of a person's life to be addressed as a part of a treatment regimen. In order to inform targeted prevention and intervention efforts, longitudinal studies of PWI and its correlates among IDU are required.
