The hydrogen diffusion and phase transformation in a titanium particle were studied based on thermodynamic calculation. The mechanisms of hydrogen diffusion in different phases (alpha-Ti, beta-Ti and TiHx) were analyzed. A mobility database was developed for titanium– hydrogen system based on the experimental works on hydrogen diffusion coefficient reported in literature and the fundamental of diffusion. To implement the calculation, a commercial software package for the simulation of diffusion-controlled phase transformation was used. The hydrogen diffusion process, hydrogen distribution, phase transformation and phase growth rate during hydrogenization of a titanium particle at temperatures of 560 K, 800K and 1000K were discussed. The thermodynamics and kinetics analysis provided quantitative insight into the diffusion process and improved the understanding of diffusion mechanism and phase transformation.

Web caching is a widely deployed technique to reduce the load to web servers and to reduce the latency for web browsers. Peer-to-Peer (P2P) web caching has been a hot research topic in recent years as it can create scalable and robust designs for decentralized internet-scale applications. However, many P2P web caching systems suffer expensive overheads such as lookup and publish messages, and lack locality awareness. In this paper, we present the development of a locality aware cache diffusion system that makes use of routing table locality, aggregation, and soft state to overcome these limitations. The analysis and experiments show that our cache diffusion system reduces the amount of information processed by nodes, reduces the number of index messages sent by nodes, and improves the locality of cache pointers.

Q-ball imaging has been presented to reconstruct diffusion orientation distribution function using diffusion weighted MRI. In this thesiis, we present a novel and robust approach to satisfy the smoothness constraint required in Q-ball imaging. Moreover, we developed an improved estimator based on the actual distribution of the MR data.

Significant changes have occurred over the last decade within the Australian Vocational Education and Training (VET) system. Not least amongst these has been a shift from a predominantly traditional face-to-face classroom model of programme delivery to more flexible models informed by the needs of clients. To lead this revolution, in 1991 the Australian Commonwealth and State Ministers for Training established the Flexible Delivery Working Party. A series of reports followed that sought to develop a policy framework, including a definition of flexible delivery, and its principles and characteristics. Despite these efforts, project funding and national staff development initiatives, several difficulties have been experienced in the ‘take-up’ of flexible delivery; problems that we argue are related to how the dissemination of innovative practice is conceived. Specifically, the literature and research on the diffusion of innovations points to the efficacy of informal social networks ‘in which individuals adopt the new idea as a result of talking with other individuals who have already adopted it’ (Valente, 1995, p. ix). Following a discussion of these issues, the article concludes by arguing the need for research of innovative practice transfer within VET in Australia, using qualitative case study in order to develop an in-depth and rich description of the process, and facilitate greater understanding of how it works in practice.

In this study, a series of fibrous membranes made from cellulose acetate (CA) and polyester urethane (PEU) by co-electrospining or blend-electrospining were evaluated for drug release kinetics, in vitro anti-microbial activity and in vivo would healing performance when used as wound dressings. To stop common clinical infections, an antibacterial agent, Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB) was incorporated into e-spun fibres. The presence of CA in the wound healing membrane was found to improve hydrophilicity and permeability to air and moisture. The in vivo tests indicated that the addition of PHMB and CA considerably improved the wound healing efficiency. CA fibres became slightly swollen upon contacting with the wound exudates. It can not only speed up the liquid evaporation but also create a moisture environment for wound recovery. The drug release dynamics of membranes was controlled by the structure of membranes and component rations within membranes. The lower ration of CA:PEU retained the sound mechanical properties of membranes, and also reduced the boost release effectively and slowed down diffusion of antibacterial agent during in vitro tests. The controlled-diffusion membranes exert long-term anti-infective effect.

The alloy Mg-1.5Gd has been extruded at different temperatures to produce two significantly different textures. At lower extrusion temperatures there was significant solute clustering in the matrix, coupled with segregation of solute to the grain boundaries. At higher temperatures these two phenomena were both less pronounced. It is suggested here that segregation of solute to the grain boundaries plays a significant role in the texture modification effect that rare earth elements have in magnesium alloys.

Phosphorescence lifetime imaging has become a widely used technique for tomographic oxygen imaging. The conventional model used to characterize photon transport in phosphorescence imaging is two coupled diffusion equations. On the premise that the total energy of excitation and phosphorescence photon flows must be conserved, we derive the diffusion equations in phosphorescence imaging and show that there must be an additional term to account for the transport of phosphorescent photons. This additional term accounts for the transport of phosphorescence photon energy density due to its gradients. The significance of this term in modelling phosphorescence in biological tissue is assessed.

We propose an infinite-horizon quantity-setting differential game with learning spillovers and organizational forgetting to analyze the optimal management decisions affecting the evolution of the stock of know-how, and, in turn, the dynamics of productive efficiency. Specifically, we study the long run impact of inter-firm knowledge diffusion on market power, i.e. the ability of a firm to raise the price above the marginal cost, and welfare. We consider two types of processes through which knowledge is acquired: (i) passive learning, or learning-by-doing, where managers do not actively invest in information and (ii) active learning, or learning-by-investing, where managers acquire new and additional information through specific investments in human capital. We show that: under (i), knowledge diffusion reduces market power; under (ii), knowledge diffusion reduces market power as long as learning spillovers are sufficiently important. From a welfare viewpoint, we also show that: under (i), knowledge diffusion is always welfare-enhancing; under (ii), weak spillovers are required in order for knowledge diffusion to be welfare-enhancing.
