The role of Riparian habitats in forest mosaics in promoting Avifauna at the landscape scale

The importance of riparian habitats to bird communities is well documented internationally, however the value of these habitats in largely intact landscapes is less well understood, particularly in Australia. Thirty paired riparian and adjacent non-riparian sites were selected within extensive forest mosaics of the Victorian Central Highlands and were surveyed over a two year period. Bird assemblages occurring within riparian habitats supported a significantly greater richness, abundance and diversity of species. These assemblages were also found to have species compositions significantly different from those occurring at adjacent non-riparian sites separated by a distance of approximately 750 m. Differences were attributed to a suite of distinctive species and significant contrasts in the densities of a range of species that occur in both habitat types. At the landscape level, there was a strong patterning of the avifauna centred on riparian habitats. Bird assemblages typically comprised four distinct suites of species: 1. species widespread in forests and woodlands of southeastern Australia; 2. riparian associated species (wet forest intruders); 3. riparian selective species, and; 4. riparian avoiding species. Both physiognomic and floristic differences between riparian and adjacent non-riparian habitats appear to drive responses in the structure of bird communities. There exists a distinctiveness and variability among the range of vegetation types and associated bird assemblages occurring throughout the forest matrix, including in riparian habitats. The occurrence of complimentary bird assemblages throughout the landscape mosaic highlights the importance of whole landscape planning for avifauna conservation.

Technology and management systems for digital rights and content: the editors friend

Since the late 1980s, when authors began to deliver typescripts to their publishers on disk, the process of editing and publishing books has been in an almost constant state of change. Not only has digital technology enabled a conflation of book production processes, but books themselves are increasingly available in a wider choice of delivery modes. From traditional hard cover and paperback books, to digital files formatted for printing on desktop printers, to files specifically prepared for delivery via hand-held electronic book-reading devices, to text designed to be read on screen (incorporating hyperlinks that facilitate the reader's ability to navigate around the text and between texts), the consumer now has potential myriad choices for delivery of their chosen content. And the publisher, it seems, has myriad ways to deliver content and to seek and satisfy new markets. As well as opportunities, these changes have caused disruption to the traditional supply chain.

This paper focuses on changes to the role of the editor caused by the digitisation of the publishing industry.

Costs of raising equity capital by renounceable rights issues in Australia

Rights issues remain a common method for raising equity capital in Australia for companies listed on me Australian Stock Exchange. This study investigates the capital raising costs of Anstralian renounceable equity rights issues from 2001 to 2006. Both direct and indirect costs are investigated and the explanatory power of potential influencing factors is analyzed. The total direct costs averaged nearly 4% of gross proceeds raised and the mean offer price was discounted around 17% from the current market price. Issue size, percentage underwritten, concentration of ownership and issuer risk significantly influence the percentage direct costs of the rights issue. The age of the issuer, the average historical volume of shares traded and the offer price appear to influence the percentage discount.
