This work describes the separation of polystyrene microparticles suspended in deionized (DI) water according to their dimensions using a dielectrophoretic (DEP) system. The DEP system utilizes curved microelectrodes integrated into a microfluidic system. Microparticles of 1, 6, and 15 μm are applied to the system and their response to the DEP field is studied at different frequencies of 100, 200, and 20 MHz. The microelectrodes act as a DEP barrier for 15 μm particles and retain them at all frequencies whereas the response of 1 and 6 μm particles depend strongly on the applied frequency. At 100 kHz, both particles are trapped by the microelectrodes. However, at 200 kHz, the 1 μm particles are trapped by the microelectrodes while the 6 μm particles are pushed toward the sidewalls. Finally, at 20 MHz, both particles are pushed toward the sidewalls. The experiments show the tunable performance of the system to sort the microparticles of various dimensions in microfluidic systems.

Administrative law remains the key defence against an over-zealous executive arm of government, but administrative law needs to be understood in an international context. Perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in relation to legislation designed to counter terrorist activities. The co-ordination of terrorist activities knows no borders, and state-centered executive action designed to address the threat of terrorism necessarily operates in a broader global environment. An important but controversial part of Australia's counter-terrorism legislation suite is the power to proscribe terrorist organisations. The authors contend that the scope of judicial review available in relation to decisions of the Commonwealth executive to proscribe terrorist organisations is inadequate and may jeapordise Australia's compliance with international standards, such as those provided in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Now is an opportune time to reassess the structure and operation of the power to proscribe organisations in Australia.

This paper studies the problem of blind source separation (BSS) from instantaneous mixtures with the assumption that the source signals are mutually correlated. We propose a novel approach to BSS by using precoders in transmitters. We show that if the precoders are properly designed, some cross-correlation coefficients of the coded signals can be forced to be zero at certain time lags. Then, the unique correlation properties of the coded signals can be exploited in receiver to achieve source separation. Based on the proposed precoders, a subspace-based algorithm is derived for the blind separation of mutually correlated sources. The effectiveness of the algorithm is illustrated by simulation examples.

This research presents the development of a microfluidic system which takes advantage of dielectrophoresis to manipulate particles. The system utilises curved microelectrodes to create strong dielectrophoretic forces within the microchannel, and exploits a novel operating strategy by patterning carbon nanotubes between the microelectrodes to trap low-conductive particles.

This paper investigates the linear separation requirements for Angle-of-Arrival (AoA) sensors, in order to achieve the optimal performance in estimating the position of a target from multiple and typically noisy sensor measurements. We analyse the sensor-target geometry in terms of the Cramer-Rao inequality and the corresponding Fisher information matrix, in order to characterize localization performance with respect to the linear spacial distribution. Here we consider a situation where one sensor is fixed and the rest are free to be positioned in a linear array.

Microphase separation induced by competitive hydrogen bonding interactions in double crystalline diblock copolymer/homopolymer blends was studied for the first time. Poly(ethylene oxide)- block-poly(e-caprolactone) (PEO-b-PCL)/poly(4-vinylphenol) (PVPh) blends were prepared in tetrahydrofuran. The diblock copolymer PEO-b-PCL consists of two immiscible crystallizable blocks wherein bothPEO and PCL blocks can form hydrogen bonds with PVPh. In these A-b-B/C diblock copolymer homopolymer blends, microphase separation takes place due to the disparity in intermolecular interactions; specifically, PVPh and PEO block interact strongly whereas PVPh and PCL block interact weakly. The TEM and SAXS results show that the cubic PEO-b-PCL diblock copolymer changes into ordered hexagonal cylindrical morphology upon addition of 20 wt % PVPh followed by disordered bicontinuous phase in the blend with 40 wt % PVPh and then to homogeneous phase at 60 wt % PVPh and above blends. Up to 40 wt % PVPh there is only weak interaction between PVPh and PCL due to the selective hydrogen bonding between PVPh and PEO. However, with higher PVPh concentration, the blends become homogeneous since a sufficient amount of PVPh is available to form hydrogen bonds with both PEO and PCL. A structural model was proposed to explain the self-assembly and microphase morphology of these blends based on the experimental results obtained. The formation of nanostructures and changes in morphologies depend on the relative strength of hydrogen bonding interaction between each block of the block copolymer and the homopolymer.
