The use of computers is becoming more widespread in education and in the wider Australian community. This communication reports the results of surveys of two cohorts of first year undergraduate students at The University of Western Australia and Deakin University, conducted at the beginning of the 2001 academic year. The surveys confirm that general IT skills among students are increasing, but that the level of skill is variable. This is consistent with a similar survey at Deakin University which was conducted at the beginning of 2000.

This study is concerned with the role of interpersonal trust in management control. On the basis of a questionnaire survey and interviews of senior managers from business organisations in sri lanka, the study explores the control behaviour of superior managers when they trust or distrust their subordinates. Sri lanka, a society in which the dependence on interpersonal trust is high, was chosen for the study to maximise the effect of interpersonal trust.

The findings of this study indicate that a superior's high trust in a subordinate is associated with a low level of monitoring, a high level of social interactions, and a low reliance on formal controls. In contrast, a superior's low level of trust in a subordinate is associated with a high level of monitoring, a low level of social interactions, and a high reliance on formal controls. Because the data emanate from experienced senior managers, these findings are at least indicative of control behaviour of superior managers in sri lanka and possibly of similar countries in asia. An understanding of the control behaviour of managers in this region is particularly important for designing and implementing effective controls systems for firms, subsidiaries, branches or joint-ventures operating in the region.

The ability to calculate drug dosages correctly is an essential skill for registered nurses to possess. Performing drug calculations accurately is not a skill that new graduates have the luxury of developing over time. Drug errors are in many instances directly related to either the administration of an incorrect dose or incorrect infusion rate (Gladstone, 1995) caused by calculation errors. A strategy for implementing drug calculation skills into our new under graduate nursing curriculum was initiated to assist students in developing proficiency in drug calculations. The aim of this program is to promote the development of calculation skills in undergraduate nursing students, rather than simply assessing their skills.

A cross-sectional study examining the oral language abilities and social skills of male juvenile offenders is described. Fifty juvenile offenders and 50 non-offending controls completed measures of language processing and production, and measures of social skill and IQ. Information about type of offending, substance use histories and learning/literacy problems was also gathered.

Young offenders performed significantly worse on all language and social skill measures, but these differences could not be accounted for on the basis of IQ. Just over half of the young offenders were identified as language impaired. This subgroup was compared with non-language impaired offending peers on a range of variables. The findings have particular implications in the areas of early intervention for high-risk boys and investigative interviewing of juvenile offenders.
