In mid-1987, the existing workers’ compensation system in New South Wales was replaced by a new Scheme, called ‘WorkCover’. While WorkCover solved a number of the financial problems that had plagued its predecessor, its enactment created other issues. Furthermore, WorkCover has failed to deal with a number of gaps in providing compensation for occupational injuries, most notably those suffered by independent contractors. By combining a study of aspects of industrial law and industrial relations, this thesis will examine some of those problems and gaps, in particular: (a) Should WorkCover be amended to enable independent contractors to come within its ambit? (b) Should there be additional insurance cover available (known as ‘top-up’ insurance) to insure those parts of workers’ wages presently left unprotected by WorkCover? (c) Should workers be permitted to take out another form of ‘top-up’ insurance to increase the quantum of death cover presently provided by the Scheme? (d) Should independent contractors who arc permitted to enter WorkCover also be permitted to obtain the extended cover set out in (b) and (c) above? Where appropriate, the thesis compares WorkCover to the workers’ compensation schemes in other Australian jurisdictions. It develops each of the matters referred to above by referring to the results of the writer’s survey of members of the Institution of Engineers (NSW Branch) which was conducted in May and June 1991.

This thesis highlights the importance of workers’ perceptions of and attitudes to sexual harassment. Past researchers have found that a variety of individual factors (age, gender, gender role, and past experiences of sexual harassment), and organisational factors (gender ratio, sexual harassment policies and the role of employers), correlate with the incidence of sexually harassing behaviours. Two studies presented in this thesis extend this research and were designed to investigate how these factors relate to workers’ attitudes towards and perceptions of sexual harassment. Study one investigated 176 workers from a large, white-collar organisation. Study two sampled 75 workers from a smaller, blue-collar organisation. By comparing two different workplaces the effect of the organisational climate was investigated. Individuals from Study two experienced more sexual harassment, were more tolerant of sexual harassment and perceived less behaviour as sexual harassment compared with individuals from Study one. The organisational context was found to affect the way in which organisational and individual factors related to workers' attitudes to and their experiences of sexual harassment. However, the factors that influenced workers’ perceptions of sexual harassment were stable across both studies. Although workers’ attitudes to and their perceptions of sexual harassment were significantly correlated, they were influenced by different factors. Overall, workers’ perceptions of sexual harassment were influenced by their attitudes, the behavioural context, and the gender of the victim and perpetrator. In contrast, attitudes to sexual harassment appeared to be more strongly influenced by individual factors, such as age, gender, gender role, past experiences of sexual harassment, and perceptions of management’s tolerance of sexual harassment. The broader implications of these findings are discussed and recommendations for future research are suggested.

This article discusses the recruitment and training of bilingual project workers and their role in data gathering; the level of comprehension of the interviewees with regard to the nature of the task and its alien nature; the contribution of social customs and expectations; the vagaries of language; the researchers' level of comprehension of data collected across a range of languages; the feelings of loss of control by the researchers over the research process; and issues of communication with bilingual project workers. The authors draw on two studies designed to assess the adequacy of questionnaire translations from English into four ethnic minority languages: Cantonese, Punjabi, Urdu and Sylheti. Bilingual project workers were recruited to carry out interviews and focus groups with the lay communities and to feed back results in English to the researchers. The authors conclude that researchers should be aware of the influence of social and contextual factors when carrying out research with ethnic minority participants mediated by bilingual project workers.

Aims & rationale/Objectives : The main objectives of this project were to:
- conduct an audit of research skills and experience of primary health care staff in nine south western Victorian not-for-profit agencies
- identify capacity for research in five pre-identified areas
- investigate unpublished research endeavours/innovative projects taking place in the linked community organisations.
Methods : A 9-item survey was developed and will be distributed to all primary health care staff at the nine agencies via the internal email system of each organisation. The survey was developed after consultation with several agency directors, to obtain an organisational perspective on research capacity issues. Staff were also invited to take part in informal focus groups exploring key themes.
Principal findings : This study is in progress, and is expected to be completed at the end of March, 2007. Expected findings are the identification of primary health care staff's capacity for research, and discussion of relevant organisational assistance which would develop their research skills or enable continued participation in research.
Discussion : Phase 2 of the Australian PHC Research, Evaluation and Development Strategy aims to support the development and expansion of the primary health care research workforce. Findings from the current study will support this goal by assisting rural primary health care workers to identify the training and support they need to undertake quality research. The data could also be used to: a) assist the consortium to identify common research interests; b) to inform the consortium regarding the potential for collective research efforts; and c) to support funding submissions from the consortium or from individual agencies.
Implications : These findings will help to inform improved strategic planning in relation to building research capacity. The data could also be used by participating agencies to support applications for research grant funding.

This study focuses on non-formal education provision for women workers in industry in Thailand. It consists of a dissertation and four elective studies. The dissertation explored the possibilities to improve women workers' quality of life. The experience gained from the research formed the Participatory Approach Model called "PAM".

This research found that : Learning that is part of an existing worker traineeship program empowers workers and enables organisational achievement. The organisation is not yet ready to utilise all the empowered workers who successfully complete the learning program. The prevailing management systems and work structures govern the degree to which the workers can transfer their newly-learned skills to the workplace.

This study found that to information technology professionals in Hong Kong, the workplace was a rich environment in which to learn. However, as information technology changed and became more complex, none of them knew all about the technologies they used and for each technology, there could be different ways of knowing it.

This thesis examined factors underlying discrimination against older job applicants. Drawing upon stereotyping and double standards-based approaches to discrimination the thesis found that positive and negative aspects of the older worker stereotype can have cumulative effects on hiring decisions and may interact with job requirements to affect discrimination.

There is a common perception among mental health professionals of the purpose of clinical supervision. However, only two-thirds of professionals in the ACT currently receive regular supervision with comparisons between nurses and allied health workers showing few differences in experience, training, access and barriers to supervision, both supervisees and supervisors.

The ethnographies of two festive public events are used to analyse some aspects of community and place in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. Place entails layers of physical and imaginal geographies and involves local and extra-local factors. Discourses about place among those who lived in Darwin are interwoven with discourses about community. A framework of border spaces and intersections are used to look at tensions and accommodations in presenting sometimes conflicting versions/visions of Darwin.
