The thesis explores the characterisation of foreign legal entities from the perspective of Australia's taxation regime. It also examines entity characterisation methodologies in the US, the UK and Germany. It proposes how juristic existence conferred on foreign forms of association should be dealt with in an Australian tax context.

All three frameworks reveal a strong positive impact of FDI on economic growth. On average, economic growth appears to have been driven by FDI, human capital, domestic investment, openness to trade, and economic freedom. However, findings on the impact of growth on FDI are somewhat different across the three frameworks.

This thesis examines the implementation of the 1984 English syllabus, which is claimed to be communicative. The study was conducted in three government Senior High Schools in Singaraja, northern Bali. The results indicate that the implementation of the Communicative Approach has been constrained by the limited resources, inadequate professional development and the national examination system, the EBTANAS.

Examines four foreign aided development projects in the secondary education sub-sector in Bangladesh. Investigates planning and implementation practices employed during the life of the four projects in order to identify factors likely to lead to greater sustainability of development projects financed with foreign aid. A major concern was how foreign aided projects sustain, or lack the means to sustain, developments that have begun when project funding ceases.

This paper describes the comparison of accuracy and performance of two machine learning approaches for visual object detection and tracking vehicles, from an on-road image sequence. The first is a neural network based approach. Where an algorithm of multi resolution technique based on Haar basis functions was used to obtain an image with different scales. Thereafter a classification was carried out with the multilayer feed forward neural network. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) technique was used as a dimension reduction technique to make the classification process much more efficient. The second approach is based on boosting which also yields very good detection rates. In general, boosting is one of the most important developments in classification methodology. It works by sequentially applying a classification algorithm to reweighed versions of the training data, followed by taking a weighted majority vote of the sequence of classifiers thus produced. For this work, a strong classifier was trained by the adaboost algorithm. The results of comparing the two methodologies visà-vis shows the effectiveness of the methods that have been used.

The modelling and simulation approach is employed to develop an intelligent energy management system for hybrid electric vehicles. The aim is to optimize fuel consumption and reduce emissions. An analysis of the role of drivetrain, energy management control strategy and the associated impacts on the fuel consumption with combined wind/drag, slope, rolling, and accessories loads are included.

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), which is a hybrid vehicle whose batteries can be recharged by plugging into an electric power source, is creating many interests due to its significant potential to improve fuel efficiency and reduce pollution. PHEVs would be the next generation of vehicles that are expected to replace conventional hybrid electric vehicles. This paper presents a study on PHEV. It gives a review of different drivetrain architectures associated with PHEVs. In addition, different control strategies that could bring about realization of advantages of PHEV capabilities are discussed and compared.

While the welfare effect of foreign aid has been extensively analyzed, the impact on the distribution of income has received less attention. At the same time, there has been recent work on tourism where it is complementary to aid in improving welfare.By combining these two strands, this paper concentrates on wage inequality in developing countries.We find that an increase in aid in the form of tied aid can lower the relative price of nontraded goods. The rent extracted from tourists declines, reducing welfare of domestic residents. In addition, the fall in the nontradable price can widen the wage inequality between skilled and unskilled workers.Thus, increased foreign aid may have detrimental effects on national welfare and the distribution of income. Rising wage inequality is confirmed by numerical simulations.

Fuel efficiency in a hybrid electric vehicle requires a fine balance between usage of combustion engine and battery power. Information about the geometry of the road and traffic ahead can have a great impact on optimized control and the power split between the main parts of a hybrid electric vehicle. This paper provides a survey on the existing methods of control and energy management emphasizing on those that consider the look-ahead road situation and trajectory information. Then it presents the future trends in the control and energy management of hybrid electric vehicles.

 It is well known that the one of the main problems concerning battery electric vehicles (BEVs) is their short range compared to conventional petrol and diesel vehicles. In this work the technical factors that will enable long range BEVs are investigated. The concept of Compounding Factors is presented and shows that if certain parameters can be met then BEV’s can have a comparable performance to conventional petrol cars. The development and initial testing of a long range BEW prototype is presented and discussed.

This research investigated the cooperation of multi underwater robots to perform a task. This combined engineering design, electronics and consensus control to create systems capable of achieving the task. Challenges such as underwater radio communications were researched and a simulation framework was created and tested on virtual and real systems.
