A study on the pedestrian's steering behaviour through a built environment in normal circumstances is presented in this paper. The study focuses on the relationship between the environment and the pedestrian's walking trajectory. Owing to the ambiguity and vagueness of the relationship between the pedestrians and the surrounding environment, a genetic fuzzy system is proposed for modelling and simulation of the pedestrian's walking trajectory confronting the environmental stimuli. We apply the genetic algorithm to search for the optimum membership function parameters of the fuzzy model. The proposed system receives the pedestrian's perceived stimuli from the environment as the inputs, and provides the angular change of direction in each step as the output. The environmental stimuli are quantified using the Helbing social force model. Attractive and repulsive forces within the environment represent various environmental stimuli that influence the pedestrian's walking trajectory at each point of the space. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model, three experiments are conducted. The first experimental results are validated against real walking trajectories of participants within a corridor. The second and third experimental results are validated against simulated walking trajectories collected from the AnyLogic® software. Analysis and statistical measurement of the results indicate that the genetic fuzzy system with optimised membership functions produces more accurate and stable prediction of heterogeneous pedestrians' walking trajectories than those from the original fuzzy model. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. In this paper, we show that in the proposed models for economic growth, the financial system variables are generally nonparametric. We, thus, use a nonparametric panel data model to estimate the financial system-economic growth relationship. Our results suggest that as long as a country's domestic credit and private credit are above their cross-sectional mean they have a positive effect on GDP growth. We also discover that market capitalisation positively and significantly impacts GDP growth, while stocks traded (with the exception of OECD countries) has a statistically insignificant effect on GDP growth.

Ply-scale finite element (FE) models are widely used to predict the performance of a composite structure based on material properties of individual plies. When simulating damage, these models neglect microscopic fracture processes which may have a significant effect on how a crack progresses within and between plies of a multidirectional laminate. To overcome this resolution limitation a multi-scale modelling technique is employed to simulate the effect micro-scale damage events have on the macro-scale response of a structure. The current paper discusses the development and validation of a hybrid mass-spring system and finite element modelling technique for multi-scale analysis. The model developed here is limited to elastic deformations; however, it is the first key step towards an efficient multi-scale damage model well suited to simulation of fracture in fibre reinforced composite materials. Various load cases have been simulated using the model developed here which show excellent accuracy compared to analytical and FE results. Future work is discussed, including extension of the model to incorporate damage modelling.

In this paper, a hybrid training model for interval type-2 fuzzy logic system is proposed. The hybrid training model uses extreme learning machine to tune the consequent part parameters and genetic algorithm to optimize the antecedent part parameters. The proposed hybrid learning model of interval type-2 fuzzy logic system is tested on the prediction of Mackey-Glass time series data sets with different levels of noise. The results are compared with the existing models in literature; extreme learning machine and Kalman filter based learning of consequent part parameters with randomly generated antecedent part parameters. It is observed that the interval type-2 fuzzy logic system provides improved performance with the proposed hybrid learning model.

Energy efficiency of a building has become a major requirement since the building sector produces 40%-50% of the global greenhouse gas emissions. This can be achieved by improving building’s performance through energy savings, by adopting energy efficient technologies and reducing CO2 emissions. There exist several technologies with less or no environmental impact that can be used to reduce energy consumption of the buildings. Earth pipe cooling system is one of them, which works with a long buried pipe with one end for intake air and the other end for providing air cooled by soil to the building. It is an approach for cooling a room in a passive process without using any habitual mechanical unit. The paper investigates the thermal performance of a horizontal earth pipe cooling system in a hot and humid subtropical climatic zone in Queensland, Australia. An integrated numerical model for the horizontal earth pipe cooling system and the room (or building) was developed using ANSYS Fluent to measure the thermal performance of the system. The impact of air temperature, soil temperature, air velocity and relative humidity on room cooling performance has also been assessed. As the soil temperature was below the outdoor minimum temperature during the peak warming hours of the day, it worked as an effective heat sink to cool the room. Both experimental and numerical results showed a temperature reduction of 1.11oC in the room utilizing horizontal earth pipe cooling system which will assist to save the energy cost in the buildings.
