Atom probe tomography (APT) has been carried out on three magnesium-based alloys: M1 (Mg-1 wt pct Mn), AZ31(Mg-3 pct Al-1 pct Zn), and ME10 (Mg-1 pct Mn- 0.4 pct misch metal). The aims of this experiment were to measure the composition of the matrix and to investigate solute clustering in the matrix of the three different alloys. For AZ31, the matrix composition was variable but close to the bulk composition. For ME10 and M1, the matrix was depleted in alloying additions, with the remainder residing in precipitates. Most alloying additions were found to exhibit clustering to some extent, with misch metal having the strongest partitioning behavior to clusters. Solute clusters did not appear to affect mechanical twinning. It has been proposed that the clustering behavior of misch metal contributes to its ability to modify the recrystallization texture.

The plastic anisotropy of magnesium alloy sheet drops rapidly with test temperature. It has previously been suggested that this may be due to an increase in the activity of (c+a) dislocations. The present note points out that the phenomenon may result, instead, from the action of grain boundary sliding. This can explain the strong effect of grain size on anisotropy. Furthermore, it points to a new avenue for alloy development.

It is shown that wrought magnesium alloys display a number of significant types of deformation inhomogeneities. These are influenced by the variation in the ease of basal slip amongst grains, micro-textures, shear banding, twinning and grain boundary sliding. Key features of each of these effects are examined and their engineering consequences and challenges are identified.

Magnesium alloys show promise for application in formed components where weight saving is an advantage. In most instances forming is carried out at elevated temperatures. However, there are considerable gains to be had if forming can be carried out under ambient conditions. The present article outlines some of the difficulties that lie in the way of achieving this objective. The underlying metallurgical characteristics of the issues are considered and means for overcoming them are discussed. It is concluded that a combination of microstructure and texture control remains a promising strategy.

Phosphonium cation based ionic liquids (ILs) have become of interest due to their unique chemical and electrochemical stability as well as their promising tribological properties. At the same time, interest has also grown in the use of phosphate and phosphinate based ionic liquids for corrosion protection of reactive metals. In this work we describe the synthesis and characterization of six novel ionic liquids based on the tetraalkylphosponium cation coupled with organophosphate and organophosphinate anions and their sulfur analogues. The conductivity and viscosity of these ILs has been measured and discussed in terms of the nature of the interactions, effect of anion basicity and the extent of ionic character. The reaction of the IL with a ZE41 magnesium aerospace alloy surface is also demonstrated.

In this study, Mg-xCa (x = 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0 and 20.0 %, wt.%, hereafter) and Mg-1Ca-1Y alloys were investigated as new biodegradable bone implant materials. The compressive strength, ultimate strength and hardness of the Mg-Ca alloys increased, whilst the corrosion rate and biocompatibility decreased, with the increase of the Ca content in the Mg-Ca alloys; higher Ca content caused the Mg-Ca alloy to become brittle. Solutions of simulated body fluid (SBF) and modified minimum essential media (MMEM) with the immersion of Mg-xCa and Mg-1Ca-1Y alloys showed strong alkalisation. The yttrium addition to the Mg-Ca alloys does not improve the corrosion resistance of the Mg-1Ca-1Y alloy as expected compared to the Mg-1Ca alloy. It is suggested that Mg-Ca alloys with Ca additions less than 1.0 wt.% exhibited good biocompatibility and low corrosion rate.

It is commonly accepted that titanium and the titanium alloying elements of tantalum, niobium, zirconium, molybdenum, tin, and silicon are biocompatible. However, our research in the development of new titanium alloys for biomedical applications indicated that some titanium alloys containing molybdenum, niobium, and silicon produced by powder metallurgy show a certain degree of cytotoxicity. We hypothesized that the cytotoxicity is linked to the ion release from the metals. To prove this hypothesis, we assessed the cytotoxicity of titanium and titanium alloying elements in both forms of powder and bulk, using osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells. Results indicated that the metal powders of titanium, niobium, molybdenum, and silicon are cytotoxic, and the bulk metals of silicon and molybdenum also showed cytotoxicity. Meanwhile, we established that the safe ion concentrations (below which the ion concentration is non-toxic) are 8.5, 15.5, 172.0, and 37,000.0 μg/L for molybdenum, titanium, niobium, and silicon, respectively.

Porous Ti-50.5Ni shape memory alloys with different porosities were produced using a space-holder sintering method. A new Ni-free Ti-based shape memory alloy, Ti-18Nb-5Mo-5Sn, was developed for potential biomedical applications, and a novel one-step hydrothermal process was applied to produce hydroxyapatite coatings on the surface of Ti alloy.

This study compared two potential model alloys, 304 stainless steel and Ni-30wt.%Fe, to study the behaviour of austenite during the thermo-mechanical processing of steel. The deformation behaviour as well as the textural and microstructural evolution was characterised in detail over a wide range of deformation conditions.
