For a developing economy with a given urban wage rate, globalization in capital markets strengthens labor unions. This result hinges on the fixed urban wage rate, which leads to a constant capital–labor ratio in the urban sector. Globalization via capital inflows not only enhances the employment effect of unionization but also reduces the rent-shifting related loss in production inefficiency to domestic capital, lending a support to labor unions for developing economies. This result is contrary to the common belief that labor unions tend to be weakened during the globalization process observed after 1980s in many developed economies.

This is the October 2013 Interim Report as part of the 'Early Years Education in the Primary Years Programme (PYP): Implementation Strategies and Programme Outcomes' Project submitted to the International Baccalaureate Organisation. This project is investigating implementation strategies and outcomes in Early Years Education in the Primary Years Programme of the IB, through a mixed-methods approach using both quantitative and qualitative data. It is based on intensive case studies of five Early Years Stage programmes within the IB Primary Years Programme, at three sites in Australia and two sites in Singapore.

The traditional Cellular Automation-based Physarum model reveals the process of amoebic self-organized movement and self-adaptive network formation based on bubble transportation. However, a bubble in the traditional Physarum model often transports within active zones and has little change to explore newareas. And the efficiency of evolution is very low because there is only one bubble in the system. This paper proposes an improved model, named as Improved Bubble Transportation Model (IBTM). Our model adds a time label for each grid of environment in order to drive bubbles to explore newareas, and deploysmultiple bubbles in order to improve the evolving efficiency of Physarum network. We first evaluate the morphological characteristics of IBTM with the real Physarum, and then compare the evolving time between the traditional model and IBTM. The results show that IBTM can obtain higher efficiency and stability in the process of forming an adaptive network.

The Physarum Network model exhibits the feature of important pipelines being reserved with the evolution of network during the process of solving a maze problem. Drawing on this feature, an Ant Colony System (ACS), denoted as PNACS, is proposed based on the Physarum Network (PN). When updating pheromone matrix, we should update both pheromone trails released by ants and the pheromones flowing in a network. This hybrid algorithm can overcome the low convergence rate and local optimal solution of ACS when solving the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). Some experiments in synthetic and benchmark networks show that the efficiency of PNACS is higher than that of ACS. More important, PNACS has strong robustness that is very useful for solving a higher dimension TSP.

The effects of a reform in capital and consumption taxes on private welfare and government tax revenue are examined for a small open, capital-importing economy. A trade-off between private welfare and tax revenue is encountered in maximizing social welfare. Nonetheless, lowering capital taxes and raising consumption taxes can increase both private welfare and tax revenue if the initial tax rates are not optimal. In addition, a tax reform by this fashion is a likely response to a rise in the foreign rate of return on capital.

The author's studied the photocatalytic properties of rational designed TiO2-ZnO hybrid nanostructures, which were fabricated by the site-specific deposition of amorphous TiO2 on the tips of ZnO nanorods. Compared with the pure components of ZnO nanorods and amorphous TiO2 nanoparticles, these TiO2-ZnO hybrid nanostructures demonstrated a higher catalytic activity. The strong green emission quenching observed from photoluminescence of TiO2-ZnO hybrid nanostructures implied an enhanced charge transfer/separation process resulting from the novel type II heterostructures with fine interfaces. The catalytic performance of annealing products with different TiO2phase varied with the annealing temperatures. This is attributed to the combinational changes in Egof the TiO2phase, the specific surface area and the quantity of surface hydroxyl groups.

A general method for the generation of two-dimensional (2D) ordered, large-area, and liftable conducting polymer-nanobowl sheet has been demonstrated via chemical polymerization for the first time. The sheet is made using the monolayer self-assembled from polystyrene (PS) spheres at the aqueous/air interface as template, followed by depositing conducting polymer on the part of PS monolayer submerging in the aqueous phase via chemical polymerization, and core extraction. During the process of polymerization, no substrate is required, which caused the as-prepared patterned conducting polymer sheet can be easily lifted-off and deposited, in full size, on any flat substrate. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum were used to characterize the products
