This study investigated what values may be influential to decision making in relation to ethical behaviour for early career lawyers. It adopted a longitudinal approach to investigate how values develop or degrade over time as final year law students move into their first two years of employment or further study. To this end, the study investigated the role that tertiary education and employers fulfill in building and perpetuating ‘appropriate’ professional values? Results demonstrate that, in general, ethical behaviour was not uniformly reinforced over time in the workplace. The undertaking of pro bono work stands out here. Results suggested that certain behaviour relevant values may develop or degrade over the early years of the Australian lawyer's career. The implications of results are discussed in the contexts of ethics education in a tertiary context and the continuing education and regulation of the legal profession.

This paper considers the provision of laboratory-practicals for distance-education students in engineering degree programmes. The authors discuss the role of laboratory-practical work in the curriculum and reflect on five methods that can be used to ensure off-campus students have an equivalent practical experience as the traditional on-campus cohort. On-campus sessions, videotapes (or ‘on-line’ movie-clips), computer simulations, home experiment kits and laboratories controlled over the internet are covered. Some examples are given to show how these can be incorporated into the curriculum. A case study then discusses the problem of (and an exemplar solution to) delivering the laboratory-practical components of two microcontroller units offered at Deakin University – a leading provider of distance-education in Australia. In doing so, it leads the reader through the solution process and cites some constraints that drive the choice of model - for example, cost considerations and the need for relevant didactic materials.

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the distribution of trans fatty acids (TFA) in plasma lipid classes and the relationship with dietary intake of TFA.

Design: After a 2 week baseline (habitual) diet, all subjects consumed a moderate fat (MF) diet for 3 weeks with the fat being derived mainly from margarine and the rest from lean beef, and then a very low fat (VLF) diet for 3 weeks with the TFA being derived only from the lean beef. Blood samples were collected 2 days prior to the end and also on the last day of each dietary period.

Setting: Deakin Institute of Human Nutrition, Deakin University, Geelong, Australia.

Subjects: Ten free-living mildly hypercholesterolaemic subjects aged 22-66 were recruited in Geelong.

Outcome measures: TFA intake was calculated from analyses of Australian margarines, butter, lean meat and animal fat. The TFA in plasma lipid fractions were separated by AgNO3 thin-layer chromatography and quantitated by capillary gas-liquid chromatography using internal standards.

Results: The phospholipid (PL) fraction contained more than 60% of the trans-18:1 isomers in the plasma lipids in all subjects. On the baseline diet, the predominant positional isomer of trans-18:1 in PL was Delta11, whereas in the other lipid classes it was the Delta9 isomer. The concentration of the Delta9 isomer increased on the MF diet, particularly in the PL fraction, while the concentration of the Delta11 isomer decreased in all fractions. On the VLF diet, the total TFA level decreased by approximately 50%, mainly due to decreases in the TFA isomers in the PL and TG fractions. Changes in plasma total and PL TFA, PL Delta9, Delta10 and Delta11 were strongly correlated with dietary TFA intake (P<0.0001). There were also significant association between dietary TFA intake and PL Delta12 (P=0.003), triacylglycerol Delta9 (P=0.009), Delta11 (P=0.0005), total triacylglycerol (P=0.023) and free fatty acid TFA (P=0.042).

Conclusions: The results suggest that the measurement of trans-18:1 in plasma PL and TAG, and plasma total TFA could be used to estimate the intake of TFA.

Australian Universities including Deakin University are entering the Formula One SAE car competition this year which was initialised in USA many years ago and has attracted many universities to participate all over the world. There are many categories to be competed for novelty of the design. To achieve optimised design of the car, computational techniques have widely been used in all aspects of the design and manufacturing of the car for the team at Deakin University. In this work, the design and manufacturing of the chassis was computationally simulated to optimise the structure for stress and natural frequencies. The chassis is designed using solid modelling code IDEAS with the geometry exported to ABAQUS, a FEM software, for optimisation.

Unravelling cultural value has long been attempted from a number of perspectives but it remains substantially unresolved. The discussion is about accountability with proponents disagreeing on whether this means stewardship of the public and trustee purse or fundamental aesthetic values. There are many reasons for this lack of agreement and thus the cultural value debates remain vibrant and healthy. However, it is also a truism that cultural related literature has been slow to recognise that cultural value serves different masters: the audience, organisational interface, the organisation, and government control. In past debates, value measurement has had a government control focus using neo classical economics and accounting to define and measure the cultural industry. Artists and other cultural stakeholders in society have critiqued such measurement as inappropriate. This paper seeks to unify these two dimensions by providing a synergistic definition of cultural value, which is pertinent to cultural organisations, and offers a model of entrepreneurial cultural value balance for the audience, cultural organisations and government.

The conceptual framework of the marketing audit has been well developed by different contributors since the late 1950s. At the present time, the popular marketing textbooks and the published academic and general literature deal primarily with the theoretical and practical aspects of the marketing audit without offering any rigorous empirical justification of the practice. The teaching of the marketing audit appears to be based on the logical expectation of its usefulness, isolated case studies, and anecdotal evidence. There is little indication of how the marketing audit is actually being used, the procedure in conducting it, and how the industry perceives and evaluates its benefits. This paper attempts to explore and profile the current practice of the marketing audit in larger Australian firms. The results of this industry-based survey of 216 large Australian businesses indicated that about 48 per cent of the respondents have used the marketing audit, with 75 per cent using the self-audit method in conducting it. The respondents’ perception was that the implementation of the recommendations of the marketing audit had contributed mostly between one per cent and 10 per cent to their organisational performance.

Construction management graduates are employed in job functions such as building and civil engineering contracting, construction and project management consulting, client organisations (public and private) and developer organisations. Considering the diversity of employment opportunities for construction management graduates, they increasingly need to have a portfolio of skills to work effectively and efficiently with other professions in the industry. In exploring this, the objective of the research presented in this paper is to determine if construction management graduates are meeting the expectations of their employers. In considering the competitive forces impacting the construction industry, the authors of this paper sought to establish whether construction managers are able to identify those key skills needed for the future success of the industry. In turn, this information is considered critical for the successful formulation of curricula. Therefore, to establish whether construction management graduates are meeting the expectations of contractors, a survey was distributed to managers to establish their expectations and observations of recent graduates. The survey results indicate that managers are generally satisfied with the skill level of graduate students. The survey also highlighted several important skills that were considered to be lacking in graduates. cknowledging that there is always a need to improve the skill level of graduates, the authors propose a number of recommendations that are considered to improve the content construction management curricula.

The ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by most industrial nations will result in an international greenhouse emissions trading market by or before 2008. Calculating the quantity of embodied energy in commercial buildings has therefore taken on added significance because it is in the creation of energy that most greenhouse gas that causes global warming is released. For energy efficient commercial buildings in Australia, the embodied energy can typically represent between 10 and 20 years of operational energy. When greenhouse emissions trading is introduced in Australia the cost of energy will rise significantly, particularly electricity which relies primarily on burning fossil fuels for generation. This will affect not only the operating energy costs of buildings (light, power & heating/cooling) but also the cost of building materials and construction. Early estimates of the potential cost of future greenhouse emission permits in Australia vary between $IO/tonne to $180Itonne. This cost would be imposed primarily on the producers of energy and passed on by them to consumers via higher energy costs. For a typical commercial building this could lead to an increase in the total procurement cost of buildings of up to 20% due to the energy embodied during the construction or refurbishment of the building. To assist in evaluating these potential cost increases McKean & Park, Sinclair Knight Merz and Deakin University have developed a web-based Carbon Cost Calculator for commercial buildings.

Over the last five years, attendance at sports events in Australia has grown at a rate of 13%; however, male spectators outnumber female spectators by 25% (ABS 2003). Drawing on a sample of 175 female respondents from the city and suburbs of Melbourne, this study identifies and explores the factors that motivate their attendance at sports events. The results show that social dimensions as well as on site entertainment can have a strong influence in attracting a female audience and that omen will
not attend if the facilities provided are not of a high standard.

There is a need for more effective and efficient social behavioural change programs instigated by public sector environmental management organisations. The concepts of intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation have been shown to provide insights into the environmental behaviour of various groups. The aim of the paper is to investigate the relationship between Intrinsic Motivation, Extrinsic Motivation and Government influence. In particular this study examines the inter-relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in environmental management. A random sample of 566 land managers in South-eastern Australia was obtained. A structural equation model was used to develop a model which identities the relationship between intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and government influence.

In this paper it is argued that increased demands for water use in the Mekong River Basin makes this region vulnerable to conflict. Strategies to both prevent and manage conflict are necessary for sustainable water use in this region. Community development is integral to sustainable development. Community development strategies are particularly useful in recognising knowledge and expertise within local communities. They also assist in involving local communities - particularly members of minority groups in collaborative efforts for sustainable natural resource use and conflict management. It is essential that local communities are active partners in the development of conflict resolution and sustainable development strategies. Active and meaningful participation of local communities in the planning, and management of local water use development activities will increase the likelihood of sustainable outcomes.

Limited academic research has focused on the retail management of pharmacies since prior studies have primarily addressed the professional service aspect of pharmacy operations. Particularly absent is the investigation of a pharmacist’s retail strategy and its relationship with non-prescription pharmacy performance. Moreover, this paper postulates that a pharmacy’s natural abilities in the form of organisational characteristics, resources and capabilities are important antecedents to the development of a retail strategy. We propose that the retail strategy and pharmacy performance relationship, which is the focus of this paper, does not operate in isolation and critical organisational antecedents are an influencing factor.

This paper aims to contribute to current buyer-supplier relationship literature through conceptually examining associations between the buyer-supplier relationship itself, organisational antecedents and the external environment. Whilst the presence of relational components within the transaction has been acknowledged, there is, has been, and remains, great difficulty in defining and understanding the dynamics of the buyer-supplier relationship itself. This study aims to address current research limitations and further develop understanding of the dynamics between buyers and suppliers, through a grounded theory research approach. The core focus is to understand the basic motivations and considerations for organisations when potentially considering relationship development with a trade partner. Thus, the organisational attributes that must be apparent and those preferred by potential trade partners are studied. Development of a conceptual model leads to the recognition of three key research questions that are to be addressed in future empirical investigation of the model.
