Microrobotic cell injection is the subject of increasing research interest. At present, an operator relies completely on visual information and can be subject to low success rates, poor repeatability, and extended training times. This paper focuses on increasing operator performance during cell injection in two ways. First, our completed haptic cell injection system aims to increase the operator's performance during real-time cell injection. Haptic bilateralism is investigated and a mapping framework provides an intuitive method for manoeuvring the micropipette in a manner similar to handheld needle insertion. Volumetric virtual fixtures are then introduced to haptically assist the operator to penetrate the cell at the desired location. The performance of the volumetric virtual fixtures is also discussed. Second, the haptically enabled cell injection system is replicated as a virtual environment facilitating virtual offline operator training. Virtual operator training utilizes the same mapping framework and haptic virtual fixtures as the physical system allowing the operator to train offline and then directly transfer their skills to real-time cell injection.

The structural transition of AIN nanocrystals and nanowires were investigated simultaneously under pressures up to 37.2 GPa by in situ angle dispersive high-pressure x-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation source and a single diamond anvil cell. The size of hexagonal AIN nanocrystals and the diameter of nanowires are 45 nm on average. A pressure-induced wurtzite to rocksalt phase transition starts at 21.5 GPa and completes at 27.8 GPa for the nanocrystals and nanowires, respectively. The high-pressure behaviors of AlN nanocrystals the same as the AIN nanowires might arise from the similar size and diameter in nanocrystals and nanowires. Hexagonal AIN nanocrystals (45 nm) display an apparent volumetric contraction as compared to the AlN nanocrystals (10 nm) which might induce the difference of transition pressure.

Detection of depression from structural MRI (sMRI) scans is relatively new in the mental health diagnosis. Such detection requires processes including image acquisition and pre-processing, feature extraction and selection, and classification. Identification of a suitable feature selection (FS) algorithm will facilitate the enhancement of the detection accuracy by selection of important features. In the field of depression study, there are very limited works that evaluate feature selection algorithms for sMRI data. This paper investigates the performance of four algorithms for FS of volumetric attributes in sMRI scans. The algorithms are One Rule (OneR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Information Gain (IG) and ReliefF. The performances of the algorithms are determined through a set of experiments on sMRI brain scans. An experimental procedure is developed to measure the performance of the tested algorithms. The result of the evaluation of the FS algorithms is discussed by using a number of analyses.

Context:
Increased mechanical loading can promote the preferential differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells to osteoblastogenesis, but it is not known whether long-term bone strength-enhancing exercise in humans can reduce marrow adiposity.

Objective:
Our objective was to examine whether bone marrow density (MaD), as an estimate of marrow adiposity 1) differs between young female athletes with contrasting loading histories and bone strengths and 2) is an independent predictor of bone strength at the weight-bearing tibia.

Design:
Mid-tibial MaD, cortical area (CoA), total area, medullary area, strength strain index (SSI), and cortical volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) (total, endocortical, midcortical, and pericortical) was assessed using peripheral quantitative computed tomography in 179 female athletes involved in both impact and nonimpact loading sports and 41 controls aged 17–40 years.

Results:
As we have previously reported CoA, total area, and SSI were 16% to 24% greater in the impact group compared with the controls (all P < .001) and 12% to 18% greater than in the nonimpact group (all P < .001). The impact group also had 0.5% higher MaD than the nonimpact and control groups (both P < .05). Regression analysis further showed that midtibial MaD was significantly associated with SSI, CoA, endocortical vBMD, and pericortical vBMD (P < .05) in all women combined, after adjusting for age, bone length, loading groups, medullary area, muscle cross-sectional area, and percent fat.

Conclusion:
In young female athletes, tibial bone MaD was associated with loading history and was an independent predictor of tibial bone strength. These findings suggest that an exercise-induced increase in bone strength may be mediated via reduced bone marrow adiposity and consequently increased osteoblastogenesis.

A highly scalable and efficient flow-system has been developed to perform the catalyzed acetylation of alcohols and phenols, such as salicylic acid, at room temperature in excellent yield. The volumetric throughput and the amount of product can be increased simply by increasing the diameter of a versatile catalytic 12-tungstosilicic acid-supported, silica monolith can be used to increase the quantity of product produced without having to changeing the optimal operatingreaction conditions.

There is evidence emerging from Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) research that autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are associated with greater impairment in the left hemisphere. Although this has been quantified with volumetric region of interest analyses, it has yet to be tested with white matter integrity analysis. In the present study, tract based spatial statistics was used to contrast white matter integrity of 12 participants with high-functioning autism or Aspergers syndrome (HFA/AS) with 12 typically developing individuals. Fractional Anisotropy (FA) was examined, in addition to axial, radial and mean diffusivity (AD, RD and MD). In the left hemisphere, participants with HFA/AS demonstrated significantly reduced FA in predominantly thalamic and fronto-parietal pathways and increased RD. Symmetry analyses confirmed that in the HFA/AS group, WM disturbance was significantly greater in the left compared to right hemisphere. These findings contribute to a growing body of literature suggestive of reduced FA in ASD, and provide preliminary evidence for RD impairments in the left hemisphere.

 Abstract: Prefabricated and modular solutions have formed a small part of the overall housing industry. This is particularly evident in Australia, where the market is dominated by hand-built housing using traditional construction techniques built by large-scale builders. This paper evaluates the ideal and the reality of prefabricated modular housing procurement in China for the Australian market. While there have been prefabricated components for the housing industry, primarily, most solutions are of volumetric nature. The findings question our understanding and methodology to prefabrication for Australia. The experiences of introducing building services into modules (pods) from overseas fabrication also have shortcomings. The case study presented indicates several of these problems and suggests a hybrid solution to volumetric delivery.

With the surge of interest in miniaturized implanted medical devices (IMDs), implantable power sources with small dimensions and biocompatibility are in high demand. Implanted battery/supercapacitor devices are commonly packaged within a case that occupies a large volume, making miniaturization difficult. In this study, we demonstrate a polymer electrolyte-enabled biocompatible magnesium-air battery device with a total thickness of approximately 300 μm. It consists of a biocompatible polypyrrole-para(toluene sulfonic acid) cathode and a bioresorbable magnesium alloy anode. The biocompatible electrolyte used is made of choline nitrate (ionic liquid) embedded in a biopolymer, chitosan. This polymer electrolyte is mechanically robust and offers a high ionic conductivity of 8.9 × 10(-3) S cm(-1). The assembled battery delivers a maximum volumetric power density of 3.9 W L(-1), which is sufficient to drive some types of IMDs, such as cardiac pacemakers or biomonitoring systems. This miniaturized, biocompatible magnesium-air battery may pave the way to a future generation of implantable power sources.

 Automated sMRI-based depression detection system is developed whose components include acquisition and preprocessing, feature extraction, feature selection, and classification. The core focus of the research is on the establishment of a new feature selection algorithm that quantifies the most relevant brain volumetric feature for depression detection at an individual level.

This 4-year cluster randomised controlled trial of 365 boys and 362 girls (mean age 8.1 ± 0.3 years) from grade 2 in 29 primary schools investigated the effects of a specialist-taught physical education (PE) program on bone strength and body composition. All children received 150 min/week of common practice (CP) PE from general classroom teachers but in 13 schools 100 min/week of CP PE was replaced by specialized-led PE (SPE) by teachers who emphasized more vigorous exercise/games combined with static and dynamic postural activities involving muscle strength. Outcome measures assessed in grades 2, 4, and 6 included: total body bone mineral content (BMC), lean mass (LM) and fat mass (FM) by DXA, and radius and tibia (4% and 66% sites) bone structure, volumetric density and strength, and muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) by pQCT. After 4-years, gains in total body BMC, FM and muscle CSA were similar between the groups in both sexes, but girls in the SPE group experienced a greater gain in total body LM [mean (95%CI), 1.0kg (0.2, 1.9)]. Compared to CP, girls in the SPE group also had greater gains in cortical area (CoA) and cortical thickness (CoTh) at the mid-tibia [CoA, 5.0% (0.2, 1.9); CoTh 7.5% (2.4, 12.6)] and mid-radius [CoA, 9.3% (3.5, 15.1); CoTh 14.4% (6.1, 22.7)], while SPE boys had a 5.2% (0.4, 10.0) greater gain in mid-tibia CoTh. These benefits were due to reduced endocortical expansion. There were no significant benefits of SPE on total bone area, cortical density or bone strength at the mid-shaft sites, nor any appreciable effects at the distal skeletal sites. This study indicates that a specialist-led school-based PE program improves cortical bone structure, due to reduced endocortical expansion. This finding challenges the notion that periosteal apposition is the predominant response of bone to loading during the pre- and early-pubertal period. This article is protected by copyright. BACKGROUND: We evaluated which aspects of neuromuscular performance are associated with bone mass, density, strength and geometry. METHODS: 417 women aged 60-94years were examined. Countermovement jump, sit-to-stand test, grip strength, forearm and calf muscle cross-sectional area, areal bone mineral content and density (aBMC and aBMD) at the hip and lumbar spine via dual X-ray absorptiometry, and measures of volumetric vBMC and vBMD, bone geometry and section modulus at 4% and 66% of radius length and 4%, 38% and 66% of tibia length via peripheral quantitative computed tomography were performed. The first principal component of the neuromuscular variables was calculated to generate a summary neuromuscular variable. Percentage of total variance in bone parameters explained by the neuromuscular parameters was calculated. Step-wise regression was also performed. RESULTS: At all pQCT bone sites (radius, ulna, tibia, fibula), a greater percentage of total variance in measures of bone mass, cortical geometry and/or bone strength was explained by peak neuromuscular performance than for vBMD. Sit-to-stand performance did not relate strongly to bone parameters. No obvious differential in the explanatory power of neuromuscular performance was seen for DXA aBMC versus aBMD. In step-wise regression, bone mass, cortical morphology, and/or strength remained significant in relation to the first principal component of the neuromuscular variables. In no case was vBMD positively related to neuromuscular performance in the final step-wise regression models. CONCLUSION: Peak neuromuscular performance has a stronger relationship with leg and forearm bone mass and cortical geometry as well as proximal forearm section modulus than with vBMD.

Effect of calcium and magnesium ions was studied in detail in batch mode in shake flask cultures of two fast growing strains of thraustochytrids (Aurantiochytrium sp. DBTIOC-18 and Schizochytrium sp. DBTIOC-1) for biomass and lipid production. These strains were previously isolated from Indian marine biodiversity. Screening of these two strains on different carbon and nitrogen sources revealed the suitability of glycerol over glucose and sodium nitrate over yeast extract for the cultivation of these strains. The presence of higher concentration of glycerol in the medium inhibited the glycerol utilization by the cell thus resulting in lower biomass and lipid production in both the strains. Supplementing media with calcium and magnesium ions promoted glycerol utilization thus resulted in a substantial rise in volumetric production of biomass (55.12 g L-1, 48.12 g L-1), fatty acid for biodiesel (27.14 g L-1, 22.15 g L-1) and docosahexaenoic acid (14.57 g L-1, 10.12 g L-1) with both strains Aurantiochytrium sp. DBTIOC-18 and Schizochytrium sp. DBTIOC-1, respectively. Growth profile study of these two strains showed further improvement in production of biomass, fatty acid for biodiesel and docosahexaenoic acid when cultures were extended up to 7 days. Finding of this work underlines the importance of calcium and magnesium salts in designing new fermentation strategies to prevent substrate inhibition and achieve high cell density culture under high nutrient concentration especially carbon sources.

Seafloors of unconsolidated sediment are highly dynamic features; eroding or accumulating under the action of tides, waves and currents. Assessing which areas of the seafloor experienced change and measuring the corresponding volumes involved provide insights into these important active sedimentation processes. Computing the difference between Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) obtained from repeat Multibeam Echosounders (MBES) surveys has become a common technique to identify these areas, but the uncertainty in these datasets considerably affects the estimation of the volumes displaced. The two main techniques used to take into account uncertainty in volume estimations are the limitation of calculations to areas experiencing a change in depth beyond a chosen threshold, and the computation of volumetric confidence intervals. However, these techniques are still in their infancy and, as a result, are often crude, seldom used or poorly understood. In this article, we explored a number of possible methodological advances to address this issue, including: (1) using the uncertainty information provided by the MBES data processing algorithm CUBE, (2) adapting fluvial geomorphology techniques for volume calculations using spatially variable thresholds and (3) volumetric histograms. The nearshore seabed off Warrnambool harbour - located in the highly energetic southwest Victorian coast, Australia - was used as a test site. Four consecutive MBES surveys were carried out over a four-months period. The difference between consecutive DEMs revealed an area near the beach experiencing large sediment transfers - mostly erosion - and an area of reef experiencing increasing deposition from the advance of a nearby sediment sheet. The volumes of sediment displaced in these two areas were calculated using the techniques described above, both traditionally and using the suggested improvements. We compared the results and discussed the applicability of the new methodological improvements. We found that the spatially variable uncertainty derived from the CUBE algorithm provided the best results (i.e. smaller confidence intervals), but that similar results can be obtained using as a fixed uncertainty value derived from a reference area under a number of operational conditions.
