AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to describe healthcare professionals' experiences and perceptions of an intervention implemented in an action research project conducted to improve nursing documentation practices in four municipalities in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Documentation of individualized patient care is a continuing concern in healthcare services and could impacts the quality and safety of healthcare. Use of electronic systems has made some aspects of documentation more comprehensive, but creation of an individualized care plan remains a pressing issue.

DESIGN: A qualitative descriptive design was used.

METHODS: An action research project was conducted between 2010 and 2012 to improve the content and quality of nursing documentation in community healthcare services in four municipalities. One year after the project was completed four focus group interviews were conducted with healthcare professionals, one for each involved municipality. Two unit managers were interviewed individually. Qualitative content analysis was used.

RESULTS: Three themes emerged: healthcare professionals perceived competing interest; they experienced that they had to manage complexity and changes; and they highlighted a clear and visible leader as important for success.

CONCLUSIONS: Quality improvement activities are essential. Healthcare professionals experience a complicated situation when electronic health record systems do not support workflow. Further research is recommended to focus on the functionality and user interface of EHR systems, and on the role of leadership when implementing changes in clinical practice. Requirements captured by requirements engineers (REs) are commonly inconsistent with their client’s intended requirements and are often error prone. There is limited tool support providing end-to-end support between the REs and their client for the validation and improvement of these requirements. We have developed an automated tool called MaramaAIC (Automated Inconsistency Checker) to address these problems. MaramaAIC provides automated requirements traceability and visual support to identify and highlight inconsistency, incorrectness and incompleteness in captured requirements. MaramaAIC provides an end-to-end rapid prototyping approach together with a patterns library that helps to capture requirements and check the consistency of requirements that have been expressed in textual natural language requirements and then extracted to semi-formal abstract interactions, essential use cases (EUCs) and user interface prototype models. It helps engineers to validate the correctness and completeness of the EUCs modelled requirements by comparing them to “best-practice” templates and generates an abstract prototype in the form of essential user interface prototype models and concrete User Interface views in the form of HTML. We describe its design and implementation together with results of evaluating our tool’s efficacy and performance, and user perception of the tool’s usability and its strengths and weaknesses via a substantial usability study. We also present a qualitative study on the effectiveness of the tool’s end-to-end rapid prototyping approach in improving dialogue between the RE and the client as well as improving the quality of the requirements.

This paper introduces TestMEReq, an automated tool for early validation of requirements. TestMEReq supports requirements engineers (REs) in the validation of the correctness, completeness and consistency of elicited requirements with minimum effort and time through generated abstract tests components: test requirements and test cases, and a mock-up prototype of the user interface (UI). Abstract tests are derived from abstract models called Essential Use Cases (EUCs) and the Essential User Interface (EUI). Our evaluation results show that TestMEReq is useful in the requirements validation process: it reduces the effort and time spent to ensure good quality requirements.

This demo introduces an automated collaborative requirements engineering tool, called TestMEReq, which is used to promote effective communication and collaboration between client-stakeholders and requirements engineers for better requirements validation. Our tool is augmented with real time communication and collaboration support to allow multiple stakeholders to collaboratively validate the same set of requirements. We have conducted a user study focusing on validating requirements using TestMEReq with a few groups of requirements engineers and client stakeholders. The study shows that our automated tool support is able to assist requirements engineers to effectively communicate with client-stakeholders to better validate the requirements virtually in real time. Utilizing user-centred system design and evaluation method has become an increasingly important tool to foster better usability in the field of virtual environments (VEs). In recent years, although it is still the norm that designers and developers are concerning the technological advancement and striving for designing impressive multimodal multisensory interfaces, more and more awareness are aroused among the development team that in order to produce usable and useful interfaces, it is essential to have users in mind during design and validate a new design from users' perspective. In this paper, we describe a user study carried out to validate a newly developed haptically enabled virtual training system. By taking consideration of the complexity of individual differences on human performance, adoption and acceptance of haptic and audio-visual I/O devices, we address how well users learn, perform, adapt to and perceive object assembly training. We also explore user experience and interaction with the system, and discuss how multisensory feedback affects user performance, perception and acceptance. At last, we discuss how to better design VEs that enhance users perception, their interaction and motor activity.

Interaction with virtual or teleoperated environments requires contact with objects on a multipoint level. We describe the design of a pinch--grasp hand interface device for use as a grasping mechanism to complement haptic interfaces. To preserve a suitable level of transparency for human--computer interaction, this novel interface is designed for high-resolution contact forces, while centered around a lightweight structure. This functionality renders the device scalable and adaptable to a wide range of haptic interface structures and force level requirements. We present an optimal configuration for a pinch--grasp interface, which produces bidirectional forces to an operator's fingers and a rotational force to the wrist through a cable drive system. The device is characterized for use on a commercial haptic interface through demonstration of sustained peak performance and also workspace utilization. The dynamic performance of the pinch--grasp interface is experimentally determined, and the frequency response is identified to illustrate its contact force resolution.

Technologies, such as Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), have proven to be one of the most versatile research equipments in the field of nanotechnology by providing physical access to the materials at nanoscale. Working principles of AFM involve physical interaction with the sample at nanometre scale to estimate the topography of the sample surface. Size of the cantilever tip, within the range of few nanometres diameter, and inherent elasticity of the cantilever allow it to bend in response to the changes in the sample surface leading to accurate estimation of the sample topography. Despite the capabilities of the AFM, there is a lack of intuitive user interfaces that could allow interaction with the materials at nanoscale, analogous to the way we are accustomed to at macro level. To bridge this gap of intuitive interface design and development, a haptics interface is designed in conjunction with Bruker Nanos AFM. Interaction with the materials at nanoscale is characterised by estimating the forces experienced by the cantilever tip employing geometric deformation principles. Estimated forces are reflected to the user, in a controlled manner, through haptics interface. Established mathematical framework for force estimation can be adopted for AFM operations in air as well as in liquid mediums.

The advent of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the emergence of Internet commerce have given rise to the web as a medium of information exchange. In recent years, the phenomenon has affected the realm of transaction processing systems, as organizations are moving from designing web pages for marketing purposes, to web-based applications that support business-to-business (WEB) and business-to-consumer (B2C) interactions, integrated with databases and other back-end systems (Isakowitz, Bieber et al., 1998). Furthermore, web-enabled applications are increasingly being used to facilitate transactions even between various business units within a single enterprise. Examples of some of the more popular web-enabled applications in use today include airline reservation systems, internet banking, student enrollment systems in universities, and Human Resource (HR) and payroll systems. The prime motive behind the adoption of web-enabled applications are productivity gains due to reduced processing time, decrease in the usage of paper-based documentation and conventional modes of communication (such as letters, fax, or telephone), and improved quality of services to clients. Indeed, web-based solutions are commonly referred to as customer-centric (Li, 2000), which means that they provide user interfaces that do not necessitate high level of computer proficiency. Thus, organizations implement such systems to streamline routine transactions and gain strategic benefits in the process (Nambisan & Wang, 1999), though the latter are to be expected in the long-term. Notwithstanding the benefits of web technology adoption, the web has ample share of challenges for initiators and developers. Many of these challenges are associated with the unique nature of web-enabled applications. Research in the area of web-enabled information systems has revealed several differences with traditional applications. These differences exist with regards to system development methodology, stakeholder involvement, tasks, and technology (Nazareth, 1998). According to Fraternali (1999), web applications are commonly developed using an evolutionary prototyping approach, whereby the simplified version of the application is deployed as a pilot first, in order to gather user feedback. Thus, web-enabled applications typically undergo continuous refinement and evolution (Ginige, 1998; Nazareth, 1998; Siau, 1998; Standing, 2001). Prototype-based development also leads web-enabled information systems to have much shorter development life cycles, but which, unlike traditional applications, are regrettably developed in a rather adhoc fashion (Carstensen & Vogelsang, 2001). However, the principal difference between the two kinds of applications lies in the broad and diverse group of stakeholders associated with web-based information systems (Gordijn, Akkermans, et al., 2000; Russo, 2000; Earl & Khan, 2001; Carter, 2002; Hasselbring, 2002; Standing, 2002; Stevens & Timbrell, 2002). Stakeholders, or organizational members participating in a common business process (Freeman, 1984), vary in their computer competency, business knowledge, language and culture. This diversity is capable of causing conflict between different stakeholder groups with regards to the establishment of system requirements (Pouloudi & Whitley, 1997; Stevens & Timbrell, 2002). Since, web-based systems transcend organizational, departmental, and even national boundaries, the issue of culture poses a significant challenge to the web systems’ initiators and developers (Miles & Snow, 1992; Kumar & van Dissel, 1996; Pouloudi & Whitley, 1996; Li & Williams, 1999).

This chapter describes a general framework for developing organizational internet security policy. A model of internet security risks for an internet user organization is proposed. The framework utilizes this model, as well as a holistic approach, to develop the organization's internet security policy. A hierarchy of sub-policies for the internet security policy is also suggested. This chapter presents findings from part of a wider investigation into internet security policy.

The reasons for considering culture-based fisheries as an aquaculture practice are presented. The need to develop culture-based fisheries, which are basically a nonconsumptive user of water compared to conventional aquaculture practices such as pond culture, to augment the aquatic food supplies, in the wake of increasing consumption of aquatic food, dwindling catches from the wild, and the decreasing rate of growth of conventional aquaculture is evaluated.

The well-documented culture-based fishery practices of a number of countries are reviewed, and the development of these is traced. It is suggested that successful practices occur in mainland China, where the production from culture-based fishery in reservoirs is estimated to be 1,165,075 tons (from a total area of 1,567,971 ha), approximating 743 kg ha−1 year−1, and which is reputed to have recorded a yearly growth of 52% from 1979 to 1997. General features of culture-based fisheries and factors responsible for increasing yields are discussed, and the importance of such practices to rural communities in developing countries is emphasised. The constraints facing the development of the practices and the importance of overcoming such constraints, especially in the wake of the increasing challenges the conventional aquaculture industry is encountering, are evaluated.
