A low-cost system to generate, control and detect electrochemiluminescence using a mobile smartphone is described. A simple tone-detection integrated circuit is used to switch power sourced from the phone's Universal Serial Bus (USB) 'On-The-Go' (OTG) port, using audible tone pulses played over the device's audio jack. We have successfully applied this approach to smartphones from different manufacturers and with different operating system versions. ECL calibrations of a common luminophore, tris(2,2′-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) ([Ru(bpy)3]2+), with 2-(dibutylamino)ethanol (DBAE) as a co-reactant, showed no significant difference in light intensities when an electrochemical cell was controlled by a mobile phone in this manner, compared to the same calibration generated using a conventional potentiostat. Combining this novel approach to control the applied potential with the measurement of the emitted light through the smart phone camera (using an in-house built Android app), we explored the ECL properties of a water-soluble iridium(III) complex that emits in the blue region of the spectrum. The iridium(III) complex exhibited superior co-reactant ECL intensities and limits of detection to that of the conventional [Ru(bpy)3]2+ luminophore.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity is a modifiable behavior related to many preventable non-communicable diseases. There is an age-related decline in physical activity levels in young people, which tracks into adulthood. Common interactive technologies such as smartphones, particularly employing immersive features, may enhance the appeal and delivery of interventions to increase levels of physical activity in young people. The primary aim of the Apps for IMproving FITness (AIMFIT) trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of two popular "off-the-shelf" smartphone apps for improving cardiorespiratory fitness in young people.

METHODS/DESIGN: A three-arm, parallel, randomized controlled trial will be conducted in Auckland, New Zealand. Fifty-one eligible young people aged 14-17 years will be randomized to one of three conditions: 1) use of an immersive smartphone app, 2) use of a non-immersive app, or 3) usual behavior (control). Both smartphone apps consist of an eight-week training program designed to improve fitness and ability to run 5 km, however, the immersive app features a game-themed design and adds a narrative. Data are collected at baseline and 8 weeks. The primary outcome is cardiorespiratory fitness, assessed as time to complete the one mile run/walk test at 8 weeks. Secondary outcomes are physical activity levels, self-efficacy, enjoyment, psychological need satisfaction, and acceptability and usability of the apps. Analysis using intention to treat principles will be performed using regression models.

DISCUSSION: Despite the proliferation of commercially available smartphone applications, there is a dearth of empirical evidence to support their effectiveness on the targeted health behavior. This pragmatic study will determine the effectiveness of two popular "off-the-shelf" apps as a stand-alone instrument for improving fitness and physical activity among young people. Adherence to app use will not be closely controlled; however, random allocation of participants, a heterogeneous group, and data analysis using intention to treat principles provide internal and external validity to the study. The primary outcome will be objectively assessed with a valid and reliable field-based test, as well as the secondary outcome of physical activity, via accelerometry. If effective, such applications could be used alongside existing interventions to promote fitness and physical activity in this population. The popularity of smartphones has led to an increasing demand for health apps. As a result, the healthcare industry is embracing mobile technology and the security of mHealth is essential in protecting patient’s user data and WBAN in a clinical setting. Breaches of security can potentially be life-threatening as someone with malicious intentions could misuse mHealth devices and user information. In this article, threats to security for mHealth networks are discussed in a layered approach addressing gaps in this emerging field of research. Suite B and Suite E, which are utilized in many security systems, including in mHealth applications, are also discussed. In this paper, the support for mHealth security will follow two approaches; protecting patient-centric systems and associated link technologies. Therefore this article is focused on the security provisioning of the communication path between the patient terminal (PT; e.g., sensors) and the monitoring devices (e.g., smartphone, data-collector).

A common occurrence in almost all full-scale natural disasters is the rapid destruction of the telecommunication infrastructure as the inevitable unfolds, which tends to halt the necessary communications between the humanitarian operators and the people in need. In such scenarios, the deployment of wireless networks would provide fast and temporary remedies, however these networks normally do not provide services to the end-users and ordinary people, instead they provide connectivity between groups of end-users administered by a local service provider. From a range of services provided to the end-users by the humanitarian operators, healthcare is by far the top priority. This is considered through the utilization of smartphones in a Mobile Health (mHealth) perspective, which is an emerging concept for monitoring and tracking end-user health conditions. This article considers an mHealth system used in a tsunami-stricken disaster scenario, including a discussion on the most recent advances of Device to Device (D2D) and LTE-Direct technologies.

This paper is concerned with the potential of mobile touch-screen devices and emerging socio-technological practices to support pedagogies of place that provide a means for young people to reflect critically on the social construction of place and to take actions that speak of and to their own locatedness. Drawing on de Certeau's (1984) concept of space as a practiced place and Massey's (2005) perspective of spatiality and interrelatedness, we examine two school-based examples of learning activities that bring together the virtual and physical as in experiences and representations of place. The first example is an Australian local history unit, where lower secondary school students participated in a series of field trips, planned and conducted under the guidance of an indigenous elder. They used Smartphones and iPads to capture and create personalised audio-visual records of their knowledge of place that were then used to create geo-location games. In the second example, upper primary school students worked with local authorities and environmental educators to select sites for two environmental monitoring posts, which were then installed and provided a locus for the students' school-based environmental science learning as well as a vehicle for community engagement. Drawing on interview, video and photographic data, this paper examines the way mobile technologies were deployed for student knowledge production, engagement with place, reconstruction of place and engagement with community.

BACKGROUND: Exercise is an essential component of contemporary cardiac rehabilitation programs for the secondary prevention of coronary heart disease. Despite the benefits associated with regular exercise, adherence with supervised exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation remains low. Increasingly powerful mobile technologies, such as smartphones and wireless physiological sensors, may extend the capability of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation by enabling real-time exercise monitoring for those with coronary heart disease. This study compares the effectiveness of technology-assisted, home-based, remote monitored exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (REMOTE) to standard supervised exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation in New Zealand adults with a diagnosis of coronary heart disease. METHODS/DESIGN: A two-arm, parallel, non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial will be conducted at two sites in New Zealand. One hundred and sixty two participants will be randomised at a 1:1 ratio to receive a 12-week program of technology-assisted, home-based, remote monitored exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (intervention), or an 8-12 program of standard supervised exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (control).The primary outcome is post-treatment maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max). Secondary outcomes include cardiovascular risk factors (blood lipid and glucose concentrations, blood pressure, anthropometry), self-efficacy, intentions and motivation to be active, objectively measured physical activity, self-reported leisure time exercise and health-related quality of life. Cost information will also be collected to compare the two modes of delivery. All outcomes are assessed at baseline, post-treatment, and 6 months, except for V̇O2max, blood lipid and glucose concentrations, which are assessed at baseline and post-treatment only. DISCUSSION: This novel study will compare the effectiveness of technology-supported exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation to a traditional supervised approach. If the REMOTE program proves to be as effective as traditional cardiac rehabilitation, it has potential to augment current practice by increasing access for those who cannot utilise existing services. In this paper we present our experience with developing telehealth applications using smartphones in conjunction with a mobile service provisioning middleware platform named Odin. Common requirements for mobile telehealth applications include the need to support multiple stakeholders, high levels of connectivity between users, real-time interaction, bidirectional communication channels for exchanging diverse data types, computationally intensive processing and security. Meeting these needs is a non-trivial task in mobile execution environments given the limitations of mobile devices and wireless and mobile networks. Odin enables a separation of concerns between application functionality and resource management governing mobile devices and wireless networking. Using Odin, application developers can rapidly develop telehealth applications without needing to address underlying complexity. We describe development of an Odin-based monitoring application that meets many of the aforementioned requirements associated with mobile telehealth. Based on evaluation, results for smartphone power consumption, network bandwidth usage, and communication latency suggest that Odin is an appropriate platform for general telehealth applications.

Recent empirical studies in the area of mobile application testing indicate the need for specific testing techniques and methods for mobile applications. This is due to mobile applications being significantly different than traditional web and desktop applications, particularly in terms of the physical constraints of mobile devices and the very different features of their operating systems. In this paper, we presented a multiple case-study involving four software development companies in the area of mobile and smartphones application. We aimed to identify testing techniques currently being applied by developers and challenges that they are facing. Our principle results are that many industrial teams seem to lack sufficient knowledge on how to test mobile applications, particularly in the areas of mobile application life-cycle conformance, context-awareness, and integration testing. We also found that there is no formal testing approach or methodology that can facilitate a development team to systematically test a critical mobile application.

Due to the various applications for smartphones, mobile data traffic is growing at an unprecedented rate. The cellular network is suffering from traffic overloaded currently. Offloading part of the cellular traffic through opportunistic contact between mobile devices is a promising solution to solve the overload problem. However, due to the uneven distribution of devices and regular mobility of smartphone users, the contacts between mobile devices are opportunistic, the cellular traffic offloading approach results in poor performance, i.e., the relay user contacts with other mobile users with small probability. In this paper, we are the first to propose a movement-based incentive mechanism for cellular traffic offloading, where we control the mobility of relay users to improve the performance of traffic offloading. The movement-based incentive mechanism contains a relay user selection algorithm and a payment determination algorithm. Comparing with existing solutions, our proposed movement-based incentive mechanism has better performance.

Diabetes is one of the leading chronic diseases affecting the lives of millions globally and early detection and treatment of this disease can serve to improve the quality of life for patients as well as suspend further health complications arising from diabetes. Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) and Insulin Pumps (IP) have been widely deployed to monitor the sugar levels in the blood stream and inject appropriate amounts of insulin to compensate for the underperforming pancreas functions of the patients’ bodies and thereby may provide appropriate treatment solutions for many diabetic sufferers. With the invention and deployment of Smartphones, the quality and performance associated with treating diabetes has reached new heights, however the privacy and security of mobilebased diabetic systems remain in ongoing challenges. This paper aims to focus on the privacy and security challenges of Mobile-Health (mHealth)-based Diabetic solutions.
