Drinking water quality guidelines are becoming increasingly stringent. To comply with these guidelines and to manage water quality in a distribution system, improved understanding of the movement and fate of drinking water constituents within the system is required. This study illustrates the construction and calibration of an electronic model of the Townsville drinking water distribution system. Being in the tropics, the temperature of the water in the distribution system changes little throughout the year (usually between 20 and 25°C); also, water is supplied to the system from two sources, the location of the blending of these waters is varies with demand.

 Wider understandings of popular, commercial Hindi (Indian) cinema centre on discourses surrounding the ‘Bollywood’ machine. In these discussions, a critical exploration of Adivasi (Indigenous) representation in Hindi cinema is often left unexplored. Popular Hindi cinema as a World Cinema exerts tremendous influence in India, and indeed South Asia. However, it continues to provide essentialist representations of Adivasi communities in India. This paper discusses some of these representations in commercial Hindi cinema, by looking at examples of film texts with Adivasi characters. It also examines the difficulties involved in cinematic representations which are blind to multiple identities within the nation-state, in this case, how Adivasis are constructed within popular Hindi cinema as the ‘Other’, to an already existing ‘Other’ subaltern (Indian) mass.
This paper additionally explores some examples of how, rather than be ‘swamped’ by Hindi film’s cultural dominance, local audiences, particularly in Adivasi communities, are negotiating with it to their advantage. It is in these peripheral and under-represented communities, that local media traditions are blending with popular Hindi cinema to produce creative results. How such results are re-invigorating the Adivasi film and music industries is examined.

We report biorenewable plastics developed from natural resources such as cellulose, wool and microorganismsynthesized poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) copolymer [1-3]. Novel materials were prepared by blending these natural polymers in an ionic liquid green solvent, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride. Cellulose /PHBV blend materials were successfully prepared in this way. The ionic liquid was completely recycled with high yield and purity after the processing. The blend materials can be processed into different solid forms such as films, noodle-like fibers and bulk blocks. It was found that there exists hydrogen bonding interaction between the components which facilities the mixing of these polymers. The cellulose/PHBV blend materials all show phase-separated structure as revealed by micro ATR-FTIR imaging (Figure 1) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The PHBV domains of 6 - 8 µm are distributed in a cellulose matrix at high concentrations of cellulose while the blend materials with high PHBV concentrations exhibit multiphase morphologies, including beadlike PHBV microdomains in the range of 300-400 nm. The dispersion of PHBV in cellulose leads to significant improvement in hydrophobicity due to its beadlike structure. The blend materials represent a class of degradable plastics from natural bioresources using the ionic liquid green solvent.

Examining magical realist texts including Tim O’Brien’s Going After Cacciato (1991), and Jonathan Safran Foer’s Everything is Illuminated (2002) and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2006), this paper discusses how magical realism examines the extremities of trauma and fear, proposing that magical realist narratives afford a unique ability to represent trauma in a way that is not open to the stylistics of literary realism. Blending the real or believable with the fantastically outrageous, magical realist narratives typically destabilise and disorder privileged centres of ‘truth’ and ‘reality’, demonstrating the constructedness of knowledge and history. Accordingly, magical realist strategies are frequently used in interventionist or counter narratives that refuse to adhere to privileged versions of truth or history and insist upon a multiplicity of experience. The majority of magical realist scholarship explores how the genre undermines hegemonic perspectives of history to clear a space for marginal representations of the past. However, as this paper argues, magical realist narratives also provide a unique space for writing about experiences of extremity. Examining the role of fantasy in representations of violence and trauma, this paper proposes that rupturing a realist narrative with the magical or un-real accommodates representations of extremity by conveying the ‘felt’ experience of trauma.

In The Scar That Binds, Keith Beattie examines the central metaphors of the Vietnam War and their manifestations in American culture and life. Blending history and cultural criticism in a lucid style, this provocative book discusses an ideology of unity that has emerged through widespread rhetorical and cultural references to the war. A critique of this ideology reveals three dominant themes structured in a range of texts: the "wound," "the voice" of the Vietnam veteran, and "home." The analysis of each theme draws on a range of sources, including film, memoir, poetry, written and oral history, journalism, and political speeches.

A highly performing natural rubber/silica (NR/SiO2) nanocomposite with a SiO2 loading of 2 wt% was prepared by combining similar dissolve mutually theory with latex compounding techniques. Before polymerization, double bonds were introduced onto the surface of the SiO2 particles with the silane-coupling agent. The core-shell structure silica-poly(methyl methacrylate), SiO2-PMMA, nanoparticles were formed by grafting polymerization of MMA on the surface of the modified SiO2 particles via in situ emulsion, and then NR/SiO2 nanocomposite was prepared by blending SiO2-PMMA and PMMA-modified NR (NR-PMMA). The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results show that PMMA has been successfully introduced onto the surface of SiO2, which can be well dispersed in NR matrix and present good interfacial adhesion with NR phase. Compared with those of pure NR, the thermal resistance and tensile properties of NR/SiO2 nanocomposite are significantly improved.

Recent re-conceptualizations of the ‘public sphere’ facilitated a much needed shift in thinking about identity politics ‘from a substance … to a movement’ (Weibel and Latour, 2007). This laid the foundation for dissolving the ‘emanatist vision’ (Bourdieu, 1990) of self-explanatory and perpetual systems and structures towards the interrogation of actions and performances that simultaneously constitute and are affected by such wider socio-political realities. Most academic contributions, however, remain on a normative or theoretical level without offering empirical insights.

This article introduces Mana Taonga as an Indigenous Māori concept of cultural politics embedded in current museum practice at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa). It creates a dialogue between Indigenous Māori practice and Western theory leading to a refined understanding of performative democracy within a museum as forum, or public sphere. The authors argue that a specific museum offers a particular place, space and empirical reality to interrogate seemingly universal concepts such as ‘culture’ and ‘politics’ by blending theoretical notions with an awareness of institutional contexts and practices.

In this replicated experiment, we investigated the comfort properties of single jersey fabrics composed of cashmere in blends with superfine wools of different fibre curvature (crimp) where the fibre diameter of the wool and cashmere were tightly controlled. The 81 fabrics were evaluated using the Wool ComfortMeter (WCM) which has been calibrated using wearer trials of wool knitwear. General linear modelling determined the best prediction models for log10 transformed fabric WCM values using 27 fibre, 16 yarn and 30 fabric attributes. Tighter fabrics were less comfortable. Progressively blending cashmere with wool progressively increased comfort assessment. The WCM was able to detect differences between fabrics which were more supple and springy, thinner and lighter, and were composed of more elastic, uniform and stronger yarns. Together these attributes explained 82% of the variance in WCM value.

Acidified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (a-MWCNTs) coated with polyaniline (PANI) (a-MWCNTs@PANI) nanofiller were prepared by in situ polymerization. Novel dielectric percolative composites, sulfonated poly(aryl ether ketone) (SPAEK)/a-MWCNTs@PANI, with high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss were fabricated using simple solution blending technique. A SPAEK/a-MWCNTs@PANI composite prepared in this fashion exhibited a high dielectric constant above 800, a dielectric loss tangent less than 1.1 at 10 kHz and room temperature. The morphological study of composites by SEM suggested that the in situ polymerization method of preparing a-MWCNTs@PANI nanofillers was useful to achieve good dispersion of fillers in SPAEK matrix.

This work is motivated by two important trends in consumer computing: (i) the growing pervasiveness of mobile computing devices, and (ii) the users’ desire for increasingly complex but readily acquired and manipulated information content. Specifically, we develop and describe a system for 3D model creation of an object, using only a standard mobile device such as a smart phone. Our approach applies the structured light projection methodology and exploits multiple image input such as frames from a video sequence. In comparison with previous work, a significant further challenge addressed here is that of lower quality input data and limited hardware (processing power and memory, camera and projector quality). Novelties include: (i) a comparison of projection pattern detection approaches in the context of a mobile environment – a robust method combining colour detection and a phase congruency descriptor is evaluated, (ii) a model for single view reconstruction which exploits epipolar, coplanarity and topological constraints, (iii) the use of mobile device sensor data in the iterative closest point algorithm used to register multiple partial 3D reconstructions, and (iv) two heuristics for determining the order in which buffered single view based reconstructions are merged. Our experiments demonstrate that visually appealing results are obtained in a speedy manner which does not require specialist knowledge or expertise from the user.

We report on the blending of three natural polymers, raw cotton, silk and wool, using ionic liquids as the dissolving media. We find that with increased content of wool and silk the thermal degradation temperature of the new bio films increases. This is due to an increase in the hydrogen bond network between the blended polymers. We also investigated the role of the coagulating solvent by coagulating the bio films using water, methanol or isopropanol. Again, we find the coagulating solvent impacts the final properties of the bio films with water shown to coagulated films with the best material properties.

Despite major advances in addressing the dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in polymers and their interfacial interactions, exploring a facile approach for massively creating them is still fascinating. We interestingly find that the CNT dispersion is considerably improved in polypropylene (PP), and ?19.1 wt % of PP chains were in situ chemically grafted onto CNT surfaces only using a trace of AlCl3 via a one-step melt-blending. Compared with the PP/CNT composite, adding 0.2 wt % of AlCl3 enables an increase in tensile strength and Young's modulus of 30% and 25%, respectively. Moreover, the elongation at break is almost maintained, while adding CNTs alone causes significant decreases. Additionally, 0.2 wt % AlCl3 makes the thermal degradation temperature further improved. These remarkable improvements in properties are mainly attributed to better dispersion of CNTs and enhanced interfacial compatibility. This work opens up an innovative approach for scalable preparation of polyolefin/CNT composites applying to industrial production.

By using both mitochondrial and nuclear multiloci markers, we explored population genetic structure, gene flow and sex-specific dispersal of frillneck lizards (Chlamydosaurus kingii) sampled at three locations, separated by 10 to 50 km, in a homogenous savannah woodland in tropical Australia. Apart from a recombinant lizard, the mitochondrial analyses revealed two nonoverlapping haplotypes/populations, while the nuclear markers showed that the frillneck lizards represented three separate clusters/populations. Due to the small population size of the mtDNA, fixation may occur via founder effects and/or drift. We therefore suggest that either of these two processes, or a combination of the two, are the most likely causes of the discordant results obtained from the mitochondrial and the nuclear markers. In contrast to the nonoverlapping mitochondrial haplotypes, in 12 out of 74 lizards, mixed nuclear genotypes were observed, hence revealing a limited nuclear gene flow. Although gene flow should ultimately result in a blending of the populations, we propose that the distinct nuclear population structure is maintained by frequent fires resulting in local bottlenecks, and concomitant spatial separation of the frillneck lizard populations. Limited mark-recapture data and the difference in distribution of the mitochondrial and nuclear markers suggest that the mixed nuclear genotypes were caused by juvenile male-biased dispersal.

This paper reports on an 18-month high school action research study and how this could be used to inform course designers and educators in other sectors of education. The high school study focused on the integration of social media into the face-to-face classroom. It used action research in a Victorian public high school in a total of 13 of the author’s classes. Data collection was in three phases over an eighteen month period. This involved the teacher creating one online social network and sharing this dynamic environment with up to seven classes in a semester. Blogs, groups, chats, discussion forums, Web 2.0 tools and a wide range of student-generated content were shared online, within a class and between classes. Students were encouraged to interact and to share their thoughts and ideas about planning as well as using their out-of-school skills and knowledge. Each topic, within each class, was one action research cycle. A number of the findings from this high school study were integrated into post-secondary education subjects at Deakin University. In an era of social media, this high school study has provided insight into how, why, where and when students learn, and by blending many of the findings into Deakin University courses, this study offers a new way of approaching teaching and learning in the broader notion of tertiary education and training.

 Persona is a public presentation of identity. One of the key values of a persona is its consistency in its presentation of the self. This article is designed to be the first exploratory steps and overview in charting the idea of seriality in relation to persona and its utility as a concept to describe the constancy and transformation of identity that is now elemental to understanding contemporary persona or the public presentation of the self and its online manifestations. Seriality in terms of persona is first investigated from its entertainment culture origins – with its use in the constitution of characters in fiction in novels, films, games and most prevalently in television. Several examples of serial persona will be analysed with an emphasis on how television has constructed often the most powerful personas: Kevin Spacey’s persona as Frank Underwood in House of Cards is discussed in greater detail in terms of the economic, cultural and affective value of serial persona and its associated formations of risk. It then explores the blending of the fictional and the real in seriality through how popular music performers – in particular Eminem - construct an authentic register of persona to allow for the exploration of the self through emotion and connection. The article concludes with thinking how seriality is connected to the constitutions of online identity and links the concept with aspects of virality and meme culture and their constructions of value, patterns and constancy as it relate to the presentation of the public self.
