Short stature and later maturation of youth artistic gymnasts are often attributed to the effects of intensive training from a young age. Given limitations of available data, inadequate specification of training, failure to consider other factors affecting growth and maturation, and failure to address epidemiological criteria for causality, it has not been possible thus far to establish cause–effect relationships between training and the growth and maturation of young artistic gymnasts. In response to this ongoing debate, the Scientific Commission of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) convened a committee to review the current literature and address four questions: (1) Is there a negative effect of training on attained adult stature? (2) Is there a negative effect of training on growth of body segments? (3) Does training attenuate pubertal growth and maturation, specifically, the rate of growth and/or the timing and tempo of maturation? (4) Does training negatively influence the endocrine system, specifically hormones related to growth and pubertal maturation? The basic information for the review was derived from the active involvement of committee members in research on normal variation and clinical aspects of growth and maturation, and on the growth and maturation of artistic gymnasts and other youth athletes. The committee was thus thoroughly familiar with the literature on growth and maturation in general and of gymnasts and young athletes. Relevant data were more available for females than males. Youth who persisted in the sport were a highly select sample, who tended to be shorter for chronological age but who had appropriate weight-for-height. Data for secondary sex characteristics, skeletal age and age at peak height velocity indicated later maturation, but the maturity status of gymnasts overlapped the normal range of variability observed in the general population. Gymnasts as a group demonstrated a pattern of growth and maturation similar to that observed among short-, normal-, late-maturing individuals who were not athletes. Evidence for endocrine changes in gymnasts was inadequate for inferences relative to potential training effects. Allowing for noted limitations, the following conclusions were deemed acceptable: (1) Adult height or near adult height of female and male artistic gymnasts is not compromised by intensive gymnastics training. (2) Gymnastics training does not appear to attenuate growth of upper (sitting height) or lower (legs) body segment lengths. (3) Gymnastics training does not appear to attenuate pubertal growth and maturation, neither rate of growth nor the timing and tempo of the growth spurt. (4) Available data are inadequate to address the issue of intensive gymnastics training and alterations within the endocrine system.

Over the past few decades coastal cities around the world have grown at an incredible rate. With this growth have come major challenges relating to land use planning, social relationships, economic development, bio diversity and the ecological footprint. Three forces are working to influence the growth rate in coastal cities. They include: -population growth (i.e. the type and quantity of human demand for land), the existing and future properties of the land (i.e. current land status or changes due to nature and human activities), and finally technical changes to a land system (i.e. rezoning or the influence of other external factors). The goal of this research was to determine whether a planning framework could model the three (population growth, the existing and future properties of land and technical changes to a land system) variables in order to assist smaller councils undertaking long term land use planning decisions. The test site for the research was the City of Portland in western Victoria, Australia.

Cloud computing is experiencing phenomenal growth and there are now many vendors offering their cloud services. In cloud computing, cloud providers cooperate together to offer their computing resource as a utility and software as a service to customers. The demands and the price of cloud service should be negotiated between providers and users based on the Service Level Agreement (SLA). In order to help cloud providers achieving an agreeable price for their services and maximizing the benefits of both cloud providers and clients, this paper proposes a cloud pricing system consisting of hierarchical system, M/M/c queuing model and pricing model. Simulation results verify the efficiency of our proposed system.

A biosynthetic platform composed of a conducting polypyrrole sheet embedded with unidirectional biodegradable polymer fibers is described (see image; scale bar = 50 µm). Such hybrid systems can promote rapid directional nerve growth for neuro-regenerative scaffolds and act as interfaces between the electronic circuitry of medical bionic devices and the nervous system.

SPARC (secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine)/BM40/Osteonectin is a matricellular protein with multiple effects on cell behaviour. In vitro, its major known functions are anti-adhesive and anti-proliferative, and it is associated with tissue remodelling and cancer in vivo. SPARC is overexpressed in many cancers, including breast cancer, and the effects of SPARC seem to be cell type-specific. To study the effects of SPARC on breast cancer, we transfected SPARC into the MDA-MB-231 BAG, human breast cancer cell line using the Tet-On inducible system. By western analysis, we found low background levels in the MDA-MB-231 BAG and clone X parental cells, and prominent induction of SPARC protein expression after doxycycline treatment in SPARC transfected clones X5, X21, X24 and X75. Induction of SPARC expression did not affect cell morphology or adhesiveness to collagens type I and IV, but it slowed the rate of proliferation in adherent cultures. Cell cycle analysis showed that SPARC slowed the progression to S phase. Doxycycline induction of SPARC also slowed the rate of monolayer wound closure in the cultured wound healing assay. Thymidine inhibition of proliferation abrogated this effect, confirming that it was due to anti-proliferation rather than inhibition of migration. Consistent with this, we were unable to detect any differences in migration and Matrigel outgrowth analysis of doxycycline-stimulated cells. We conclude that SPARC is inhibitory to human breast cancer cell proliferation, and does not stimulate migration, in contrast to its stimulatory effects reported for melanoma (proliferation and migration) and glioma (migration) cells. Similar growth repression by SPARC has been reported for ovarian cancer cells, and this may be a common feature among carcinoma.

The phenomenal growth in economy experienced in developed countries throughout the 20th century has largely been driven by the availability of conventional energy sources for electricity generation. However, increased concern about fossil fuels and adverse effect of carbon dioxide emission in to atmosphere changed the conventional power system to a viable one by integrating renewable energy sources into the existing system. Among the Renewable Energy (RE) sources, wind energy is one of the fastest growing technologies in reducing the Green House Gas (GHG) emissions in to the atmosphere due to its continuous availability throughout a period. Hence, this paper discusses the performance of a wind-grid connected system in a semi-arid region by conducting a case study. Wilson promontory, one of the best locations for wind generation in Victoria is considered as a case study. Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable (HOMER) is used as a simulating tool for this analysis. This study also presents the influences of storage system in the proposed Hybrid Power System (HPS) allowing energy to be stored during higher generations or lower load demands. In addition this paper also discusses the major integration issues to facilitate the large scale wind energy into the grid for reliable power generation and distribution.

The resolved shear stress is believed to play an important role in twin formation. The present study tests this idea for an extruded magnesium alloy by examining "tension" twinning in different grain orientations. Electron backscatter diffraction analysis is employed for alloy AZ31 tested in compression along the extrusion axis to strains between 0.008 and 0.015. For heavily twinned grains, it is seen that twinning occurs on 2.3 twin systems per grain on average. The active systems are also most commonly those with, or very near to, the highest Schmid factor. The most active system in multiply twinned grains accounts on average for ∼0.6 of the twinning events. In addition, it is found that the twin habit plane falls within 6° of the K1 plane. Orientations with the highest Schmid factors (0.45-0.5) for twinning display twin aspect ratios greater by ∼40% and twin number densities greater by ∼10 times than orientations with maximum Schmid factors for twinning of 0.15-0.2. Thus the Schmid factor for twinning is seen to affect nucleation more than thickening in the present material. Viscoplastic crystal plasticity simulations are employed to obtain approximations for the resolved shear stress. Both the twin aspect ratio and number density correlate quite well with this term. The effect of the former can be assumed to be linear and that of the latter follows a power law with exponent ∼13. Increased aspect ratios and number densities are seen at low Schmid factors and this may relate to stress fluctuations, caused most probably in the present material by the stress fields at the tips of blocked twins. Overall, it is evident that the dominance of twinning on high Schmid factor systems is preserved at the low strains examined in the present work, despite the stress fluctuations known to be present. © 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. This study investigates the fracture mechanism of fluid coupled with a solid resulting from hydraulic fracture. A new loading machine was designed to improve upon conventional laboratory hydraulic fracture testing and to provide a means of better understanding fracture behavior of solid media. Test specimens were made of cement mortar. An extensometer and acoustic emission (AE) monitoring system recorded the circumferential deformation and crack growth location/number during the test. To control the crack growth at the post-peak stage the input fluid rate can be adjusted automatically according to feedback from the extensometer. The complete stress-deformation curve, including pre- and post-peak stages, was therefore obtained. The crack extension/growth developed intensively after the applied stress reached the breakdown pressure. The number of cracks recorded by the AE monitoring system was in good agreement with the amount of deformation (expansion) recorded by the extensometer. The results obtained in this paper provide a better understanding of the hydraulic fracture mechanism which is useful for underground injection projects. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Wien.

In the injured adult nervous system, re-establishment of growth-promoting molecular gradients is known to entice and guide nerve repair. However, incorporation of three-dimensional chemotactic gradients in nerve repair scaffolds, particularly in those with multi-luminal architectures, remains extremely challenging. We developed a method that establishes highly tunable three-dimensional molecular gradients in collagen-filled multi-luminal nerve guides by anchoring growth-factor releasing coiled polymeric fibers onto the walls of collagen-filled hydrogel microchannels. Differential pitch in the coiling of neurotrophin-eluting fibers generated sustained three-dimensional chemotactic gradients that appropriately induced the differentiation of Pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells into neural-like cells along an increasing concentration of nerve growth factor (NGF). Computer modeling estimated the stability of the molecular gradient within the luminal collagen, which we confirmed by observing the significant effects of neurotrophin gradients on axonal growth from dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Neurons growing in microchannels exposed to a NGF gradient showed a 60% increase in axonal length compared to those treated with a linear growth factor concentration. In addition, a two-fold increment in the linearity of axonal growth within the microchannels was observed and confirmed by a significant reduction in the turning angle ratios of individual axons. These data demonstrate the ability of growth factor-loaded polymeric coiled fibers to establish three-dimensional chemotactic gradients to promote and direct nerve regeneration in the nervous system and provides a unique platform for molecularly guided tissue repair.

The focus of this paper is to test whether free market institutions that protect property rights and support freedom of choice and voluntary exchange can change the curse of natural resources into a blessing. To examine the above question, this paper uses the Fraser Institute's economic freedom index and its five sub-indices, namely government size, property rights, access to sound money, freedom to trade, and setting proper regulations. Using data from 99 sample countries over the period 1970-2010, the system GMM estimates suggest that the negative growth effects of resource rents may turn positive in countries with greater economic freedom.

High-quality single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with narrow diameter distribution can be generated from well-defined Si8O12 nanoclusters structure which form from thermal decomposition of chemically modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). The nanosized SixOy particles were proved to be responsible for the SWNT growth and believed to be the reason for the narrow diameter distribution of the as-grown SWNTs. This could be extended to other POSS. The SWNTs grown from the nanosized SixOy particles were found to be semiconducting enriched SWNTs (s-SWNTs). A facile patterning technology, direct photolithography, was developed for generating SWNT pattern, which is compatible to industrial-level fabrication of SWNTs pattern for device applications. The metal-free growth together with preferential growth of s-SWNTs and patterning in large scale from the structure-defined silicon oxide nanoclusters not only represent a big step toward the control growth of SWNTs and fabrication of devices for applications particularly in nanoelectronics and biomedicine but also provide a system for further studying and understanding the growth mechanism of SWNTs from nanosized materials and the relationship between the structure of SWNT and nonmetal catalysts.

We measured resting and peak metabolism in relation to growth rate in arctic tern Sterna paradisaea chicks over the first 10 d after hatching. For chicks with varying growth rate, body mass seems to be a better predictor of resting metabolic rate rather than age. The effect of changes in growth rate on resting metabolism of arctic terms is smaller than found interspecifically in hatchlings. It is possible that difference exist in the heat increment of feeding between fast and slow growers that would further reduce the effect of growth rate on resting metabolism. Chicks that had body masses lower than 75% of that expected for their age were metabolically inferior in withstanding a thermal challenge compared with chicks of the same age but normal mass. In contrast to resting metabolic rate, the extent of peak metabolic rate is related to both body mass and age. This, in part, the maturation of the thermoregulatory system proceeds steadily with time even when body mass lags behind.

Molting females of Monteiro's Hornbills (Tockus monteiri) seal themselves in nest cavities to breed until chicks are about half grown. To gain insight into the chronology of energy requirements of the Monteiro's Hornbill family unit in relation to this peculiar breeding strategy, we measured a number of ecological, physiological, and environmental variables during the Monteiro's Hornbill's breeding season. Those measurements included rates of energy expenditure of female Monteiro's Hornbills while in the nest cavity, characterizing their thermal environment, timing of egg laying, molt, hatching and fledging of chicks, as well as measuring clutch size and chick growth. Temperatures within the nest box varied between 12 and 39°C and did not affect the female energy expenditure. Female body mass and energy expenditure averaged 319 g and 5 W, respectively, at the start of concealment and decreased by on average 1.1 g day -1 and 0.05 W day -1 during at least the first 30 days of the 52-58 day concealment period. Clutch size varied between 1 and 8 and averaged 4.1 eggs, with eggs averaging only 66% of the mass predicted for a bird of this size. Over the range of chick ages at which the female might leave the nest, the predicted energy requirements for maintenance and tissue growth for a Monteiro's Hornbill chick increase sharply from 1.2 W at age 8 to 3.0 W at age 25. Reduction of the female energy requirement with time, the relatively low growth rate and therewith low energy requirements of Monteiro's Hornbill chicks, and an appropriate timing of the female's exodus from the nest cavity all aid in containing peak energy demands to levels that are sustainable for the food provisioning male.

The 42 amino acid Alzheimer's Aβ peptide is involved in the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Here we describe the effects of intracellular Aβ, produced through its attachment to either end of a green fluorescent protein, in yeast. Cells producing Aβ exhibited a lower growth yield and a heat shock response, showing that Aβ fusions promote stress in cells and supporting the notion that intracellular Aβ is a toxic molecule. These studies have relevance in understanding the role of Aβ in the death of neuronal cells, and indicate that yeast may be a new tractable model system for the screening for inhibitors of the stress caused by Aβ.
