The effect of grain size on the mechanical properties and deformation twinning behaviour in high manganese steel was investigated. In order to generate different grain sizes, the samples were subjected to hot rolling, cold rolling and annealing. Room temperature tensile testing of the steel with different grain sizes (5-50 µm) indicated the occurrence of twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) in all the samples. Also, changes in work-hardening behaviour accompanied changes in the grain size. The results are discussed in terms of the enhanced sensitivity of twinning to the grain size.

In the present paper the effect of grain refinement on the dynamic response of ultra fine-grained (UFG) structures for C–Mn and HSLA steels is investigated. A physically based flow stress model (Khan-Huang-Liang, KHL) was used to predict the mechanical response of steel structures over a wide range of strain rates and grain sizes. However, the comparison was restricted to the bcc ferrite structures. In previous work [K. Muszka, P.D. Hodgson, J. Majta, A physical based modeling approach for the dynamic behavior of ultra fine-grained structures, J. Mater. Process. Technol. 177 (2006) 456–460] it was shown that the KHL model has better accuracy for structures with a higher level of refinement (below 1 μm) compared to other flow stress models (e.g. Zerrili-Armstrong model). In the present paper, simulation results using the KHL model were compared with experiments. To provide a wide range of the experimental data, a complex thermomechanical processing was applied. The mechanical behavior of the steels was examined utilizing quasi-static tension and dynamic compression tests. The application of the different deformation histories enabled to obtain complex microstructure evolution that was reflected in the level of ferrite refinement.

The importance of particle size in titanium (Ti) fabricated by powder metallurgy for the surface energy and its impact on the apatite formation was investigated. Four sorts of Ti powders of different mean particle size were realized through 20 min, 2 h, 5 h and 8 h of ball milling, respectively. Each sort of Ti powder was used to fabricate porous Ti and its nonporous counterparts sharing similar surface morphology, grain size and chemical composition, and then alkali-heat treatment was conducted on them. Surface energy was measured on the surfaces of the nonporous Ti counterparts due to the difficulty in measuring the porous surfaces directly. The surface energy increase on the alkali-heat-treated porous and nonporous Ti was observed due to the decrease in the particle size of the Ti powders and the presence of Ti–OH groups brought by the alkali-heat treatment. The apatite-inducing ability of the alkali-heat-treated porous and nonporous Ti with different surface energy values was evaluated in modified simulated body fluid and results indicated that there was a strong correlation between the apatite-inducing ability and the surface energy. The alkali-heat-treated porous and nonporous Ti discs prepared from the powders with an average particle size of 5.89 ± 0.76 μm possessed the highest surface energy and the best apatite-inducing ability when compared to the samples produced from the powders with the average particle size varying from 19.79 ± 0.31 to 10.25 ± 0.39 μm.

A simple series of test was developed to highlight and compare the difference between the static strain induced transformation (SSIT) and the dynamic strain induced transformation (DSIT) mechanism in grain refinement and also to investigate the origin of the difference between the two mechanisms. The results showed that while the SSIT sets up a two-dimensional impingement among the ferrite grains, it cannot avoid their coarsening (normal growth). However, the DSIT forms a group of grains with a three-dimensional impingement which does not coarsen and maintains their fine size throughout the transformation, thereby, reduces the final average grain size.

This project was concerned with the perception of size constancy of simple, elongated and planar objects in the light and dark. The main findings are: transverse, vertical and medial axes give rise to different degrees of size constancy; true size and shape of the objects proved to be a factor in size constancy; the size-distance invariance hypothesis (SDIH) cannot explain underconstancy in the light, and perfect constancy in the dark.

The performance of extruded AZ31, AZ61 and AM-EX1 tubes was examined in three-point bending. Different extrusion temperatures were used to investigate the effect of grain size on the load-carrying capacity, energy absorption and fracture propensity of the tubes. Results showed that while the peak load increased with a smaller average recrystallised grain size, the retention of large elongated un-recrystallised grains in the microstructure reduced the load. The presence of the large elongated grains also appeared detrimental to the ability of the tube to deform before fracture.

Deformation twinning behaviour in differently grain sized samples of a commercial pure titanium and a magenisum alloy is investigated. In some aspects the phenomenology of twinning differs between the two materials while in others both materials show a similar response. Nucleation density per unit of nucleating interface and twin aspect ratio scale with applied stress. The impact of grain size on twin volume fraction is modelled analytically.

The males of some species of moths possess elaborate feathery antennae. It is widely assumed that these striking morphological features have evolved through selection for males with greater sensitivity to the female sex pheromone, which is typically released in minute quantities. Accordingly, females of species in which males have elaborate (i.e., pectinate, bipectinate, or quadripectinate) antennae should produce the smallest quantities of pheromone. Alternatively, antennal morphology may be associated with the chemical properties of the pheromone components, with elaborate antennae being associated with pheromones that diffuse more quickly (i.e., have lower molecular weights). Finally, antennal morphology may reflect population structure, with low population abundance selecting for higher sensitivity and hence more elaborate antennae. We conducted a phylogenetic comparative analysis to test these explanations using pheromone chemical data and trapping data for 152 moth species. Elaborate antennae are associated with larger body size (longer forewing length), which suggests a biological cost that smaller moth species cannot bear. Body size is also positively correlated with pheromone titre and negatively correlated with population abundance (estimated by male abundance). Removing the effects of body size revealed no association between the shape of antennae and either pheromone titre, male abundance, or mean molecular weight of the pheromone components. However, among species with elaborate antennae, longer antennae were typically associated with lower male abundances and pheromone compounds with lower molecular weight, suggesting that male distribution and a more rapidly diffusing female sex pheromone may influence the size but not the general shape of male antennae.

Objectives This study investigated cultural values related to body image and eating practices in Western and non-Western societies.

Design and Methods In total, 628 Fijian, 463 Indo-Fijian, 598 Tongan, and 534 Australian adolescents completed measures of cultural values and religious influences in relation to the ideal body and eating practices.

Results Fijian and Tongan adolescents were more likely to value a large body. Religious influences were most strongly associated with eating practices for Fijians, Indo-Fijians, and Tongans.

Conclusions The findings support the role of religion in transmitting cultural values regarding eating practices in Pacific Island communities.

What is already known on this subject? Previous research has demonstrated that sociocultural factors shape body image and eating behaviours. Most of this research has been conducted in Western countries.

What does this study add? The current study identifies the role of cultural values and religious influences on body image and eating behaviours in a number of different cultural groups. This is the first study to use the same methodology to explore these relationships across Western and Pacific Island communities.

The effect of austenite grain size on the kinetics of the isothermal bainitic transformation in a high-carbon super-bainitic steel was investigated. Experimental results showed that the transformation of super bainite was accelerated by a coarse austenite grain size. This is because while coarse austenite grains provide less nucleation sites, it is beneficial for bainite sheaf growth. Meanwhile, there is a critical austenite grain size below which there is a distinct grain size effect and above which it is not evident. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Microstructure evolution after solutionizing and ageing treatment of cast AZ80 Mg alloy were investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Effect of these treatments on grain size, β-Mg17Al12 intermetallic phase, mechanical behavior, and flow asymmetry were investigated. The initial continuous network of β-phase found to be reduced after solutionizing. The dissolution of β-phase and simultaneous grain growth are found to be interrelated. Mechanical properties including yield strength, maximum strength (ultimate compressive strength), and maximum strain attainable in compressive found almost twice than the corresponding values obtained in tension. The asymmetry in compressive and tensile properties is found to decrease with grain size at certain solutionizing duration. Particular heat treatment found to offer best combination of tensile compressive flow properties in AZ80 Mg alloy. Aging under certain conditions found to minimize the strength asymmetry. © ASM International.
