The ever-growing cellular traffic demand has laid a heavy burden on cellular networks. The recent rapid development in vehicle-to-vehicle communication techniques makes vehicular delay-tolerant network (VDTN) an attractive candidate for traffic offloading from cellular networks. In this paper, we study a bulk traffic offloading problem with the goal of minimizing the cellular communication cost under the constraint that all the subscribers receive their desired whole content before it expires. It needs to determine the initial offloading points and the dissemination scheme for offloaded traffic in a VDTN. By novelly describing the content delivery process via a contact-based flow model, we formulate the problem in a linear programming (LP) form, based on which an online offloading scheme is proposed to deal with the network dynamics (e.g., vehicle arrival/departure). Furthermore, an offline LP-based
analysis is derived to obtain the optimal solution. The high efficiency of our online algorithm is extensively validated by simulation results.

In this paper, an Evolutionary Artificial Neural Network (EANN) that combines the Fuzzy ARTMAP (FAM) network and a Hybrid Evolutionary Programming (HEP) model is introduced. The proposed FAM-HEP model, which combines the strengths of FAM and HEP, is able to construct its network structure autonomously as well as to perform learning and evolutionary search and adaptation concurrently. The effectiveness of the proposed FAM-HEP network is assessed empirically using several benchmark data sets and a real medical diagnosis problem. The performance of FAM-HEP is analyzed, and the results are compared with those of FAM-EP, FAM, and other classification models. In general, the results of FAM-HEP are better than those of FAM-EP and FAM, and are comparable with those from other classification models. The study also reveals the potential of FAM-HEP as an innovative EANN model for undertaking pattern classification problems in general, and a promising computerized decision support tool for tackling medical diagnosis tasks in particular.

It is important to derive priority weights from interval-valued fuzzy preferences when a pairwise comparative mechanism is used. By focusing on the significance of consistency in the pairwise comparison matrix, two numerical-valued consistent comparison matrices are extracted from an interval fuzzy judgement matrix. Both consistent matrices are derived by solving the linear or nonlinear programming models with the aid of assessments from Decision Makers (DMs). An interval priority weight vector from the extracted consistent matrices is generated. In order to retain more information hidden in the intervals, a new probability-based method for comparison of the interval priority weights is introduced. An algorithm for deriving the final priority interval weights for both consistent and inconsistent interval matrices is proposed. The algorithm is also generalized to handle the pairwise comparison matrix with fuzzy numbers. The comparative results from the five examples reveal that the proposed method, as compared with eight existing methods, exhibits a smaller degree of uncertainty pertaining to the priority weights, and is also more reliable based on the similarity measure. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. This thesis provides a unified and comprehensive treatment of the fuzzy neural networks as the intelligent controllers. This work has been motivated by a need to develop the solid control methodologies capable of coping with the complexity, the nonlinearity, the interactions, and the time variance of the processes under control. In addition, the dynamic behavior of such processes is strongly influenced by the disturbances and the noise, and such processes are characterized by a large degree of uncertainty. Therefore, it is important to integrate an intelligent component to increase the control system ability to extract the functional relationships from the process and to change such relationships to improve the control precision, that is, to display the learning and the reasoning abilities. The objective of this thesis was to develop a self-organizing learning controller for above processes by using a combination of the fuzzy logic and the neural networks. An on-line, direct fuzzy neural controller using the process input-output measurement data and the reference model with both structural and parameter tuning has been developed to fulfill the above objective. A number of practical issues were considered. This includes the dynamic construction of the controller in order to alleviate the bias/variance dilemma, the universal approximation property, and the requirements of the locality and the linearity in the parameters. Several important issues in the intelligent control were also considered such as the overall control scheme, the requirement of the persistency of excitation and the bounded learning rates of the controller for the overall closed loop stability. Other important issues considered in this thesis include the dependence of the generalization ability and the optimization methods on the data distribution, and the requirements for the on-line learning and the feedback structure of the controller. Fuzzy inference specific issues such as the influence of the choice of the defuzzification method, T-norm operator and the membership function on the overall performance of the controller were also discussed. In addition, the e-completeness requirement and the use of the fuzzy similarity measure were also investigated. Main emphasis of the thesis has been on the applications to the real-world problems such as the industrial process control. The applicability of the proposed method has been demonstrated through the empirical studies on several real-world control problems of industrial complexity. This includes the temperature and the number-average molecular weight control in the continuous stirred tank polymerization reactor, and the torsional vibration, the eccentricity, the hardness and the thickness control in the cold rolling mills. Compared to the traditional linear controllers and the dynamically constructed neural network, the proposed fuzzy neural controller shows the highest promise as an effective approach to such nonlinear multi-variable control problems with the strong influence of the disturbances and the noise on the dynamic process behavior. In addition, the applicability of the proposed method beyond the strictly control area has also been investigated, in particular to the data mining and the knowledge elicitation. When compared to the decision tree method and the pruned neural network method for the data mining, the proposed fuzzy neural network is able to achieve a comparable accuracy with a more compact set of rules. In addition, the performance of the proposed fuzzy neural network is much better for the classes with the low occurrences in the data set compared to the decision tree method. Thus, the proposed fuzzy neural network may be very useful in situations where the important information is contained in a small fraction of the available data.

This study proposes a novel non-parametric method for construction of prediction intervals (PIs) using interval type-2 Takagi-Sugeno-Kang fuzzy logic systems (IT2 TSK FLSs). The key idea in the proposed method is to treat the left and right end points of the type-reduced set as the lower and upper bounds of a PI. This allows us to construct PIs without making any special assumption about the data distribution. A new training algorithm is developed to satisfy conditions imposed by the associated confidence level on PIs. Proper adjustment of premise and consequent parameters of IT2 TSK FLSs is performed through the minimization of a PI-based objective function, rather than traditional error-based cost functions. This new cost function covers both validity and informativeness aspects of PIs. A metaheuristic method is applied for minimization of the non-linear non-differentiable cost function. Quantitative measures are applied for assessing the quality of PIs constructed using IT2 TSK FLSs. The demonstrated results for four benchmark case studies with homogenous and heterogeneous noise clearly show the proposed method is capable of generating high quality PIs useful for decision-making.

Uncertainty of data affects decision making process as it increases the risk and the costs of the decision. One of the challenges in minimizing the impact of the bounded uncertainty on any scheduling algorithm is the lack of information, as only the upper bound and the lower bound are provided without any known probability or membership function. On the contrary, probabilistic uncertainty can use probability distributions and fuzzy uncertainty can use the membership function. McNaughton's algorithm is used to find the optimum schedule that minimizes the makespan taking into consideration the preemption of tasks. The challenge here is the bounded inaccuracy of the input parameters for the algorithm, namely known as bounded uncertain data. This research uses interval programming to minimise the impact of bounded uncertainty of input parameters on McNaughton’s algorithm, it minimises the uncertainty of the cost function estimate and increase its optimality. This research is based on the hypothesis that doing the calculations on interval values then approximate the end result will produce more accurate results than approximating each interval input then doing numerical calculations.

This paper introduces a new non-parametric method for uncertainty quantification through construction of prediction intervals (PIs). The method takes the left and right end points of the type-reduced set of an interval type-2 fuzzy logic system (IT2FLS) model as the lower and upper bounds of a PI. No assumption is made in regard to the data distribution, behaviour, and patterns when developing intervals. A training method is proposed to link the confidence level (CL) concept of PIs to the intervals generated by IT2FLS models. The new PI-based training algorithm not only ensures that PIs constructed using IT2FLS models satisfy the CL requirements, but also reduces widths of PIs and generates practically informative PIs. Proper adjustment of parameters of IT2FLSs is performed through the minimization of a PI-based objective function. A metaheuristic method is applied for minimization of the non-linear non-differentiable cost function. Performance of the proposed method is examined for seven synthetic and real world benchmark case studies with homogenous and heterogeneous noise. The demonstrated results indicate that the proposed method is capable of generating high quality PIs. Comparative studies also show that the performance of the proposed method is equal to or better than traditional neural network-based methods for construction of PIs in more than 90% of cases. The superiority is more evident for the case of data with a heterogeneous noise. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

In this study, simulation and hardware implementation of Fuzzy Logic (FL) Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) used in photovoltaic system with a direct control method are presented. In this control system, no proportional or integral control loop exists and an adaptive FL controller generates the control signals. The designed and integrated system is a contribution of different aspects which includes simulation, design and programming and experimental setup. The resultant system is capable and satisfactory in terms of fastness and dynamic performance. The results also indicate that the control system works without steady-state error and has the ability of tracking MPPs rapid and accurate which is useful for the sudden changes in the atmospheric condition. MATLAB/Simulink software is utilized for simulation and also programming the TMS320F2812 Digital Signal Processor (DSP). The whole system designed and implemented to hardware was tested successfully on a laboratory PV array. The obtained experimental results show the functionality and feasibility of the proposed controller.

Karnik-Mendel (KM) algorithm is the most used and researched type reduction (TR) algorithm in literature. This algorithm is iterative in nature and despite consistent long term effort, no general closed form formula has been found to replace this computationally expensive algorithm. In this research work, we demonstrate that the outcome of KM algorithm can be approximated by simple linear regression techniques. Since most of the applications will have a fixed range of inputs with small scale variations, it is possible to handle those complexities in design phase and build a fuzzy logic system (FLS) with low run time computational burden. This objective can be well served by the application of regression techniques. This work presents an overview of feasibility of regression techniques for design of data-driven type reducers while keeping the uncertainty bound in FLS intact. Simulation results demonstrates the approximation error is less than 2%. Thus our work preserve the essence of Karnik-Mendel algorithm and serves the requirement of low
computational complexities.

The idea of meta-cognitive learning has enriched the landscape of evolving systems, because it emulates three fundamental aspects of human learning: what-to-learn; how-to-learn; and when-to-learn. However, existing meta-cognitive algorithms still exclude Scaffolding theory, which can realize a plug-and-play classifier. Consequently, these algorithms require laborious pre- and/or post-training processes to be carried out in addition to the main training process. This paper introduces a novel meta-cognitive algorithm termed GENERIC-Classifier (gClass), where the how-to-learn part constitutes a synergy of Scaffolding Theory - a tutoring theory that fosters the ability to sort out complex learning tasks, and Schema Theory - a learning theory of knowledge acquisition by humans. The what-to-learn aspect adopts an online active learning concept by virtue of an extended conflict and ignorance method, making gClass an incremental semi-supervised classifier, whereas the when-to-learn component makes use of the standard sample reserved strategy. A generalized version of the Takagi-Sugeno Kang (TSK) fuzzy system is devised to serve as the cognitive constituent. That is, the rule premise is underpinned by multivariate Gaussian functions, while the rule consequent employs a subset of the non-linear Chebyshev polynomial. Thorough empirical studies, confirmed by their corresponding statistical tests, have numerically validated the efficacy of gClass, which delivers better classification rates than state-of-the-art classifiers while having less complexity.
