Electrospinning is a very useful technique to produce polymeric nanofibers. It involves fast-drawing a polymer fluid into nanofibers under a strong electric filed, and depositing randomly on an electrode collector to form non-woven nanofiber mat in most cases [1]. The fibre stretching during electrospinning is a fast and incessant process which can be divided into three consecutive stages: jet initiation, whipping instability and fibre deposition. From the initial jet to dry fibres, the fibre stretching takes place in milliseconds, so it has been hardly so far to observe fiber morphology changes by any normal methods, such as high speed photography [2-5]. In this study, we used a facile and practical approach to realize the observation of nanofiber morphology changes during electrospinning. Through a special collection device with coagulation bath, newly electrospun nanofibers can be solidified at different electro spinning distances, and by associating the fiber morphology with the electrospinning distance (d), the morphological evolution of nanofibers can be established. We used polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polystyrene (PS) as two model polymers to demonstrate this method in present research. From experimental results, we found the massive jet-thinning happens at the initial stage of the process. The formation of uniform PAN nanofibers (7%) and the beads structure changes on beads-on-string PAN nanofibers (5%) have also been successful observed. Using the same method, we also observed PS nanofiber (10%) morphology changes to understand the beads formation 011 nanofibers during electrospinning process, and how the beads was eliminated when ionic surfactant is added into the PS solution for electrospinning.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterised by the formation of amyloid deposits composed primarily of the amyloid β-peptide (Aβ). This peptide has been shown to bind redox active metals ions such as copper and iron, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and formation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The generation of H2O2 has been linked with Aβ neurotoxicity and neurodegeneration in AD. Because of the relative stability of a tyrosyl radical, the tyrosine residue (Tyr-10) is believed to be critical to the neurotoxicity of Aβ. This residue has also been shown to be important to Aβ aggregation and amyloid formation. It is possible that the formation of an Aβ tyrosyl radical leads to increased aggregation via the formation of dityrosine as an early aggregation step, which is supported by the identification of dityrosine in amyloid plaque. The role of dityrosine formation in Aβ aggregation and neurotoxicity is as yet undetermined, partly because there are no facile methods for the synthesis of Aβ dimers containing dityrosine. Here we report the use of horseradish peroxidase and H2O2 to dimerise N-acetyl-l-tyrosine ethyl ester and apply the optimised conditions for dityrosine formation to fully unprotected Aβ peptides. We also report a simple fluorescent plate reader method for monitoring Aβ dimerisation via dityrosine formation.

The use of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles as ultraviolet (UV) absorbers for many organic substrates is limited because of the high photocatalytic activity of ZnO. In this study, a facile and efficient technique for the preparation of a hybrid material of silica-coated ZnO nanoparticles was used to reduce the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. Monodispersed ZnO nanopartcles were prepared by wet chemistry and the particle surface was modified by tetraethylorthosilicate to form a silica coating via the Sto¨ ber method. ZnO samples, both before and after the coating process, were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, dynamic light scanning, infrared, and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The effect of the surface modification on the photocatalytic activity of ZnO was studied by monitoring the degradation of Rhodamine B caused by photo-generated free radicals. The results implied that the photo-generation of free-radicals was strongly quenched by the presence of silica on the particle surface.

This thesis reports on the development and expansion of reliable synthetic di-and multi-tin precursors for the assembly of oligomeric organotin-oxo compounds in which the shape, dimension and tin nuclearity can be controlled. The reaction of polymeric diorganotin oxides, (R2SnO)m (R = Me, Et, n-Bu, n-Oct, c-Hex, i-Pr, Ph), with saturated aqueous NH4X solutions (X = F, Cl, Br, I, OAc) in refluxing 1,4-dioxane afforded in high yields dimeric tetraorganodistannoxanes, [R2(X)SnOSn(X)R2]2, and in a few cases diorganotin dihalides or diacetates, R2SnX2. This method appears to be particularly good for the synthesis of halogenated tetraorganodistannoxanes but a less suitable method for the preparation of dicarboxylato tetraorganodistannoxanes. Identification of [R2(OH)SnOSn(X)R2]2 (R = n-Bu; X = Cl, Br) and [R2(OH)SnOSn(X)R2][R2(X)SnOSn(X)R2] suggest a serial substitution mechanism starting from [R2(OH)SnOSn(OH)R2]2. A series of α, ω -bis(triphenylstannyl)alkanes, [Ph3Sn]2(CH2)n (n = 3-8, 10, 12) and some of their derivatives were synthesised and characterised. These α, ω-bis(triphenylstannyl)alkanes, [Ph3Sn]2(CH2)n were converted to the corresponding halides [R(Cl)2Sn]2(CH2)n (R = CH2SiMe3) and subsequently to the polymeric oxides {[R(0)Sn]2(CH2)n}m. Reaction of {[R(O)Sn]2(CH2)n}m with [R(Cl)2Sn]2(CH2)n. (n = 3, n' = 4 and n = 4, n' = 3) in toluene at 100°C results in a mixture of symmetric and asymmetric double ladders, where different spacer chain lengths (n and n') provide the source of asymmetry. The coexistence at high temperature of separate 119Sn NMR signals belonging to symmetric and asymmetric double ladders suggests an equilibrium that is slow on the 119Sn NMR time scale and the position of which is temperature dependent. However, 119Sn NMR spectroscopic experiments of {[R(0)Sn]2(CH2)3}m with [R(Cl)2Sn]2(CH2)n for longer spacers (n - 5, 6, 8, 10, 12) reveal that molecular self-assembly of symmetric spacer-bridged di-tin precursors of equal chain length is preferred over asymmetric species. An ether-bridged di-tin tetrachloride [R(Cl)2Sn(CH2)3]2O (R = CH2SiMe3) and its corresponding polymeric oxide {[R(O)Sn(CH2)3]2O}m were synthesised and characterised. Reaction of [R(Cl)2Sn(CH2)3]2O with {[R(O)Sn(CH2)3]2O}m results in a unique functionalised double ladder {{[RSn(Cl)](CH2)3O(CH2)3[RSn(Cl)]}O}4 whose structure in the solid state was determined by X-ray analysis. Identification of tetrameric functionalised double ladder as well as dimeric and monomeric species suggest the existence of an equilibrium in solution. The feasibility of the functionalised double ladder to form host-guest complexes with a variety of metal cations is investigated using electrospray mass spectrometry (ESMS). Evidence for such complexes is found only for sodium cations. The reaction between {[R(O)Sn]2(CH2)n}m (n = 3, 4, 8, 10) and triflic acid is described. The initial formed products [RSn(CH2)nSnR](OTf)4 are easily hydrolysed. For n = 3, self-assembly leads to a discrete double ladder type structure, {{[RSn(OH)](CH2)3[RSn(H2O)]}O}44OTf, which is the first example of a cationic double ladder. For n ≥ 3, hydrolysis gives polymeric products, as demonstrated by the crystal structure of {[(H2O)(OH)RSn]2(CH2)4-2OTf2H2O}m. Two spacer-bridged terra-tin octachlorides [R(Cl)2Sn(CH2)3Sn(Cl)2]2(CH2)n (R = CH2SiMes; n = 1, 8) and their corresponding polymeric oxides {[R(O)Sn(CH2)3Sn(O)]2(CH2)n}m were successfully synthesised and characterised. Attempts were made to synthesise quadruple ladders from these precursors. Reactions of [R(Cl)2Sn(CH2)3Sn(Cl)2]2CH2 with {[R(O)Sn(CH2)3Sn(O)]2CH2}m or (Y-Bu2SnO)3 result in, mostly insoluble, amorphous solids. Reactions of [R(Cl)2Sn(CH2)3Sn(Cl)2]2(CH2)8 with {[R(O)Sn(CH2)3Sn(O)]2(CH2)8}m or (t-Bu2SnO)s result in new tin-containing species which are presumably oligomeric. The synthesis of a series of alkyl-bridged di-tin hexacarboxylates [(RCO2)3Sn]2(CH2)n (n = 3, 4; R = Ph, c-C6H11, CH3, C1CH2) is also reported. The hydrolysis of these compounds is facile and complex. There appears to be no correlation between spacer chain length and hydrolysis product. However, the conjugate acid strength of the carboxylate does appear to be important. In general only insoluble amorphous polymeric organotin-oxo compounds were obtained.

The 1,3 dipolar cycloaddition between carbonyl ylids (generated from cyclobutene epoxides flanked by esters) and norbornyl alkenes – the ACE reaction – offers a facile method for the construction of polynorbornyl molecular frameworks. This reaction has, as described in this dissertation, underpinned the construction of molecular frameworks that have peptides and amino acids attached. Such highly rigid peptide-frameworks are of use in the field of peptidomimetics; the template molecule governs the final positioning of any attached groups such that a precise arrangement of amino acids can be achieved without the need to construct entire proteins. In the course of any ACE reaction the ester flanked cyclobutene epoxide is transformed to a 1,3 dipole, the esters serve to stablise this reactive intermediate and are as a consequence incorporated in the reaction product. Modification of these esters provides pseudo-equatorial points for peptide attachment. These methyl esters were replaced with tert-butyl esters to provide pseudo-axial attachment points that could be selectively addressed. The optimal strategy for peptide-framework construction involved direct condensation of carboxyl protected amino acids to bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2-endo-carboxylic acid as well as condensation of amino acids to cyclobutene epoxides derived from this acid. The ACE reaction of (±) bicycloheptene-2-endo-carboxylic acid derivatives with cyclobutene epoxides synthesised from such racemic acid derivatives provided a mixture of enantiomers and meso compounds. In order to control the position of the attachment points – and hence the final location of the attached peptides – the ACE reaction required chiral starting materials. Accordingly, all peptidoframeworks were derived from the chiral (2S)-(-)-bicycloheptene carboxylic acid. The ACE reaction of this (S)-norbornene with the (S)-epoxide provided a peptide framework in which the attached amino acids were positioned pseudo-axially. Deprotection of the amino acid allowed peptide chain building in the pseudo-axial direction. Using this strategy a framework with an alanine residue and a triglycine peptide was synthesised. By combining this strategy with the ter-butyl ester variant a framework with pseudo-axial alanine and pseudo-equatorial glycine residues was manufactured.

We present a facile and effective method for controlling the surface hydrophobicity of polyimide films from sticky to superhydrophobic properties by tailoring their topographies. Nanostructured silver layers were produced on polyimide films by treatment with aqueous KOH and AgNO3, followed by thermal treatment at 200 degrees C or higher temperatures. Further modification of the gold-coated silver layers with n-dodecanethiol led to hydrophobic surfaces. Different morphologies of the silver layers at the micro- and nano-meter scales, which result in the variety of hydrophobicity, can be tailored by controlling the thermal treatment temperature. Surfaces prepared at 320 degrees C showed a sticky property that water drops did not slide off even when the sample was held upside down. Superhydrophobic surfaces were obtained when the temperature was above 340 degrees C. A remarkable superhydrophobicity, as evidenced by a very large water contact angle of 162 degrees and a very small sliding angle of 7 degrees, was achieved by heating the modified polyimide films at 360 degrees C. This is also the first example for superhydrophobic modification of polyimide films.

This manuscript describes a facile alternative route to make thin-film yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte by liquid-phase assisted electrophoretic deposition utilizing electrostatic-steric stabilized YSZ suspension followed by sintering. Very fine YSZ particles in ball-milled suspension facilitate their sustained dispersion through electrostatic mechanism as evidenced by their higher zeta potentials. Binder addition into the ball-milled suspension is also demonstrated to contribute complementary steric hindrance effects on suspension stability. As the consequence, the film quality and sinterability improve in the sequence of film made from non ball-milled suspension, film made from ball-milled suspension and film made from ball-milled suspension with binder addition. The specific deposition mechanisms pertaining to each suspension are also postulated and discussed below. A very thin dense electrolyte layer of ∼10 μm can be achieved via electrophoretic deposition route utilizing ball-milled suspension and binder addition. This in turn, makes the electrolyte resistance a more negligible part of the overall cell resistance. Further on, we also tested the performance of SOFC utilizing as-formed 10 μm YSZ electrolyte i.e. YSZ-NiO|YSZ|LSM (La0.8Sr0.2MnO3-δ), whereby a maximum power density of ∼850 mW cm−2 at 850 °C was demonstrated.

Hybrid TiO2/microcrystalline cellulose (MC) nanophotocatalyst was prepared in situ by a facile and simple synthesis utilizing benign precursors such as MC and TiCl4. The as-prepared nanocomposite was characterized by XRD, XPS, BET surface area analyzer, UV–vis DRS and TGA. Surface morphology was assessed by the means of SEM and HR-TEM. Statistics-based factorial design (FD) was adopted to investigate the effect of precursors concentrations and therefore to optimize the nanocomposite synthesis through catalytic adsorption of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The results indicated that TiO2/MC nanocomposites were photocatalytically active in diminishing 40–90% of MB in 4 h.

The corrosion behavior of magnesium single crystals with various crystallographic orientations was examined in this study. To identify the effects of surface orientation on the corrosion behavior in a systematic manner, single-crystal specimens with ten different rotation angles of the plane normal from the [0001] direction to the [1010] direction at intervals of 10° were prepared and subjected to potentiodynamic polarization and potentiostatic tests as well as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Potentiodynamic polarization results showed that the pitting potential (E pit) first decreased from −1.57 V SCE to −1.64 V SCE with an increase in the rotation angle from 0° to 40°, and then increased to −1.60 V SCE with a further increase in the rotation angle to 90°. The results obtained from potentiostatic tests are also in agreement with the trend in potentiodynamic polarization tests as a function of rotation angle. A similar trend was also observed for the depressed semicircle and the total resistances in the EIS measurements due to the facile formation of MgO and Mg(OH)2 passive films on the magnesium surface. In addition, the amount of chloride in the passive film was found first to increase with an increase in rotation angle from 0° to 40°, then decrease with a further increase in rotation angle, indicating that the tendency to form a more protective passive film increased for rotation angle near 0° [the (0001) plane] or 90° [the (1010) plane].

Development is a difficult undertaking in any environment, but much more so in places such as Myanmar with its “perfect storm” of extreme poverty, international sanctions, and political repression and human rights violations with concomitant conflicts within development organizations over norms and policies.

Context-Sensitive Development examines how to effect successful development interventions in Myanmar. Anthony Ware points out that while practitioners have questioned universal economic prescriptions for development, they have not been as consistent in questioning the normative foundations behind their work. Ware does not argue for a facile moral relativism; he sees Myanmar as an egregious violator of human rights, but he does call for “context sensitivity” to help organizations adapt their values to better meet the needs of client populations.

Through his years of practice in the field and extensive series of interviews, the author brings into focus key issues of perception and practice that are intrinsic to the development enterprise. Although the focus is on Myanmar as a quintessential “difficult” case, Ware shows how his conclusions can be used elsewhere. His book represents a major contribution to both development theory and practice, vital for both the classroom and the development organization in situ.

Here we report a facile method for controlling the morphology and porosity of porous siloxane membranes through manipulation of the water content of precursor microemulsions. The polymerizable microemulsion precursors consisted of a methacrylate-terminated siloxane macromonomer (MTSM) as the oil phase, nonionic surfactant (Teric G9A8), water, and cosurfactant (isopropanol). Photo-polymerization of the oil phase in the parent microemulsion solutions resulted in polymeric solids, and subsequent removal of the extractable components yielded porous PDMS membranes. The pre-cured parent microemulsion solutions and post-cured polymers were characterized by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) while the nanostructures of extracted porous polymer membranes were characterized by SAXS, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mercury porosimetry. The results indicated that nano- and micro-structures of the membranes could be modulated by the water content of the precursor microemulsions. Further, in situ photo-rheometry was used to follow the microemulsion polymerization process. The rate of polymerization and the mechanical properties of the resulting PDMS membranes also depend on the water content of precursor microemulsions. This study demonstrates a simple approach to the fabrication of a variety of novel porous PDMS membranes with controllable morphology and porosity.

Exploring high performance cathode materials is essential to realize the adoption of Li-ion batteries for application in electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. FeF3, as a typical iron-based fluoride, has been attracting considerable interest due to both the high electromotive force value of 2.7 V and the high theoretical capacity of 237 mA h g_1 (1e_ transfer). In this study, we report a facile lowtemperature solution phase approach for synthesis of uniform iron fluoride nanocrystals on reduced graphene sheets stably suspended in ethanol solution. The resulting hybrid of iron fluoride nanocrystals and graphene sheets showed high specific capacity and high rate performance for iron fluoride type cathode materials. High stable specific capacity of about 210 mA h g_1 at a current density of 0.2 C was achieved, which is much higher than that of LiFePO4 cathode material. Notably, these iron fluoride/ nanocomposite cathode materials demonstrated superior rate capability, with discharge capacities of 176, 145 and 113 mA h g_1 at 1, 2 and 5 C, respectively.

Despite the high strength and stiffness of polymer nanocomposites, they usually display lower deformability and toughness relative to their matrices. Spider silk features exceptionally high stiffness and toughness via the hierarchical architecture based on hydrogen-bond (H-bond) assembly. Inspired by this intriguing phenomenon, we here exploit melamine (MA) to reinforce poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) via H-bond self-assembly at a molecular level. Our results have shown that due to the formation of physical cross-link network based on H-bond assembly between MA and PVA, yield strength, Young’s modulus, extensibility, and toughness of PVA are improved by 22, 25, 144, and 200% with 1.0 wt % MA, respectively. Moreover, presence of MA can enhance the thermal stability of PVA to a great extent, even exceeding some nanofillers (e.g., graphene). This work provides a facile method to improve the mechanical properties of polymers via H-bond self-assembly.
