Refuge in the land of liberty : France and its refugees, from the revolution to the end of asylum, 1787-1939

France has a long tradition of asylum for refugees. Since the Revolution, this has made it the land of liberty (pays de la liberte) and the land of asylum (la terre d'asile)." Various refugee movements - from the late eighteenth-century Lowlands, to Spanish and Italian liberals in the 1820s, Polish nationalists in the 1830s. German social revolutionaries of 1848-9, anti-Bolsheviks from the Russian Revolution, Christians from the former Ottoman Empire, and Jews from Nazi Germany - have met with mixed responses, which shifted uneasily between sympathy, principle, pragmatism, and open hostility." "This book examines the tensions between refugee rights and political responses to refugees, and between humanitarian concern for their plight and hostility to their imposition on the state. Increasingly punitive measures against refugees saw, in 1939, the end of asylum in the internment of republican exiles from the Spanish Civil War.

Generation B and the end of empire

Many scholars have traced the events and issues which accompanied the postwar decline in the British Empire and the changing nature of the Australian-British relationship. Most tell the story through a complex narrative of shifting foreign, defence and economic policies from the real separation between Australia and Britain occurred, when Britain tried unsuccessfully to enter the European Economic Community and when Australia assisted the United States at war in Vietnam. Others attempt to tell the story of the end of empire through intricate constitutional and legal discussions. But the real separation between Australia and Britain was far more complex and nuanced than it is possible to adequately explain, as David Lowe argues here.

New work ethics? The corporate athlete's back end index and organisational performance

Drawing on Michel Foucault’s later genealogies of the Self the paper will illustrate particular dimensions of the increasingly powerful individualizing and normalizing processes shaping the lifeworlds of worker-citizens in a globalizing risk society. Processes that require those who wish to be positively identified as professional, entrepreneurial, resilient, effective, athletic to do particular sorts of work on themselves. Here the paper argues that we can identify the emergence of what we call New Work Ethics. We illustrate this more general argument via an analysis of the ways in which a large Information Technology (IT) organization seeks to produce—via a workplace health and fitness program—employees who imagine themselves as embodying the behaviours and dispositions that mark the person as a corporate athlete. Knowledge of the Self in these terms can, it is promised, enhance the performance of the Self, and the organization.

At the sharp end : journal ranking and the dreams of academics

Purpose – The purpose of this article is to review and comment on the Australian Government's entry into the journal ranking domain.

Design/methodology/approach – A review and reflection on the approach and potential impact of the direction taken.

Findings – This project is arguably the largest of its type and the effects on academic publishing and the survival of journals could be far reaching.

Originality/value – The article draws together current material on the Australian Government's activities and provides details of the scope of the journal ranking project.
