Introduction and Aims
Regulatory and collaborative intervention strategies have been developed to reduce the harms associated with alcohol consumption on licensed venues around the world, but there remains little research evidence regarding their comparative effectiveness. This paper describes concurrent changes in the number of night-time injury-related hospital emergency department presentations in two cities that implemented either a collaborative voluntary approach to reducing harms associated with licensed premises (Geelong) or a regulatory approach (Newcastle).

Design and Methods

This paper reports findings from Dealing with Alcohol-Related problems in the Night-Time Economy project. Data were drawn from injury-specific International Classification of Disease, 10th Revision codes for injuries (S and T codes) presenting during high-alcohol risk times (midnight—5.59 am, Saturday and Sunday mornings) at the emergency departments in Geelong Hospital and Newcastle (John Hunter Hospital and the Calvary Mater Hospital), before and after the introduction of licensing conditions between the years of 2005 and 2011. Time-series, seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average analyses were conducted on the data obtained from patients' medical records.

Results

Significant reductions in injury-related presentations during high-alcohol risk times were found for Newcastle since the imposition of regulatory licensing conditions (344 attendances per year, P < 0.001). None of the interventions deployed in Geelong (e.g. identification scanners, police operations, radio networks or closed-circuit television) were associated with reductions in emergency department presentations.

Discussion and Conclusions

The data suggest that mandatory interventions based on trading hours restrictions were associated with reduced emergency department injury presentations in high-alcohol hours than voluntary interventions. This paper investigates the determinants and economic consequences of disclosure of internal control weaknesses (ICWs) by Chinese listed firms under the voluntary disclosure regime over 2010-2011. We find that the probability of firms disclosing ICWs is not only associated with firm characteristics such as profitability, age and business complexity, but is also strongly related to the unique attributes of corporate governance and ownership structure in Chinese listed firms, e.g. the independence of the supervisory board, political connections, concentration of the top 3 shareholders' ownership and tradability of shares.Our results show that the severity of the ICWs disclosed is negatively and significantly associated with earnings response coefficients (ERCs), and audit assurance of ICRs has a significant moderating effect on the relationship between ICWs and ERCs. Our research adds further evidence to support the implementation of SOX-type regulations globally.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the cultural underpinnings of accounting practices through a comparative analysis of India and New Zealand, using the chairperson's report, which is increasingly becoming one of the most important segments of the corporate annual report.
Design/methodology/approach – The annual reports of Indian and New Zealand companies from 2001 to 2005 were selected to investigate the extent and nature of information disclosure in their chairperson's report. “Content analysis” is the main methodological orientation of the paper.
Findings – The paper argues that, contrary to propositions based on Hofstede's cultural framework, Indian companies provide more disclosure in their chairperson's report than their New Zealand counterparts. This leads to the conclusion that voluntary disclosure, more generally, is a complex phenomenon and cultural variables alone may not be sufficient predictors of the voluntary disclosure practices of a country.
Originality/value – Using India and New Zealand, two countries with significant cultural differences, according to Hofstede's typology, the paper extends the literature by focusing on the chairperson's report, a more recent accounting phenomenon which is gaining popularity across the globe.

Using Korean listed firms subject to the auditor "designation rule", this paper shows that (1) firms that switch auditors exhibit lower stock liquidity than firms that do not switch auditors, and (2) the negative liquidity effect of auditor switches is concentrated in firms that switch to low-quality auditors. Meanwhile, firms that switch auditors under the auditor designation system do not exhibit lower stock liquidity, consistent with audit designation mitigating the concerns about audit quality deterioration around auditor changes. Furthermore, we find that foreign ownership has a mitigating impact on the negative relation between auditor switches and stock liquidity, suggesting that investors are less concerned about auditor switches when an alternative monitoring mechanism exists.

INTRODUCTION: We examined the cumulative effect of 4 consecutive bouts of non-invasive brain stimulation on corticospinal plasticity and motor performance, and whether these responses were influenced by the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) polymorphism.

METHODS: In a randomized double-blinded cross-over design, changes in strength and indices of corticospinal plasticity were analyzed in 14 adults who were exposed to 4 consecutive sessions of anodal and sham transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Participants also undertook a blood sample for BDNF genotyping (N=13).

RESULTS: We observed a significant increase in isometric wrist flexor strength with transcranial magnetic stimulation revealing increased corticospinal excitability, decreased silent period duration, and increased cortical voluntary activation compared to sham tDCS.

DISCUSSION: The results show that 4 consecutive sessions of anodal tDCS increased cortical voluntary activation manifested as an improvement in strength. Induction of corticospinal plasticity appears to be influenced by the BDNF polymorphism.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of 6 atmospheres of pressure (ATA) on plantar flexors' (PF) voluntary force and activation, force-frequency characteristics, and rate of torque development (RTD). Eight subjects performed PF isometric contractions. Muscle activation was monitored by electromyographic (EMG) activity (PF and dorsiflexors) and the interpolated twitch technique (ITT). Maximal evoked contractions of the PF were elicited at 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20, and 40 Hz. PF RTD was calculated with maximal voluntary, 1 and 40 Hz contractions. Hyperbaric pressures significantly decreased PF voluntary torque; 6.2%, ITT activation; 2.8% with a trend for a 19.1% decrease in EMG (p = 0.1). There were no significant differences in the dorsiflexors/PF EMG ratio. One Hz torque was potentiated 15.7% with an increased absolute RTD of 12.8%, but no change in relative RTD. The results suggested hyperbaric-induced decreases in PF activation contributed to voluntary torque loss. A lack of torque reduction with higher frequency tetanic stimulation (2-40 Hz) suggested that 6 ATA does not impair myofilament kinetics, whereas twitch potentiation may include changes in excitation-contraction coupling.

Maximal strength training has been reported to emphasize neural adaptations. The main objective of this study was to detect differences in muscle activation between 5, 10, and 20 repetition maximum (RM) sets. Fourteen subjects performed elbow flexion with 5, 10, and 20RM. Subjects were tested for maximum isometric force (maximal voluntary contraction [MVC]), twitch amplitude (peak twitch [Pt]), time to peak twitch (TPT), half relaxation time (1/2 RT), electromyography (EMG), and muscle activation (interpolated twitch). Subjects were tested preexercise and 30 seconds, 1, 2, and 3 minutes postexercise. There were no significant differences in MVC, muscle activation, or antagonist/agonist EMG after 5, 10, or 20RM. However, greater RM did have a greater detrimental effect on twitch properties than fewer RM. Peak twitch was significantly (p = 0.004) less (32.08%) for the 20 than for the 5RM, whereas TPT shortened (p < 0.05) by 7.3 and 11.1% with 10 and 20RM vs. 5RM, respectively. Half relaxation time at 20RM was shortened (p < 0.05) by 20.6 and 25.4% compared with that at 5 and 10RM, respectively. MVC, muscle activation, and temporal twitch properties did not recover within 3 minutes of recovery. In conclusion, whereas 5RM did not produce greater muscle inactivation, twitch contractile properties were affected to a greater degree by a higher number of RM.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 22 °C local muscle temperature of intact human plantar flexors performing fatiguing contractions on evoked and voluntary contractile properties before and after fatigue. Twelve subjects were tested on plantar flexor voluntary torque, percent muscle activation derived from twitch interpolation, integrated electromyographic (iEMG) activity, and evoked torque and temporal characteristics of maximal twitch and tetanic stimulations before fatigue and 1, 5, and 10 min after intermittent, high-intensity, isometric fatigue under both normothermic and hypothermic conditions. Hypothermic and normothermic changes between time points were analysed by repeated-measures analysis of variance. Normothermic fatigue induced small to large effects (Cohen’s d: 0.29–3.06) on voluntary and evoked contractile properties, whereas most effects of unfatigued hypothermia were limited to rate-dependent processes (Cohen’s d: 0.78–1.70). Most tetanic properties were potentiated 1 min after normothermic fatigue, but remained unchanged by hypothermic fatigue, resulting in significant differences between the two conditions. Soleus iEMG significantly declined 1 min after normothermic fatigue (–29%), but not after hypothermic fatigue. Twitch torque was potentiated by 29% one minute after fatigue while normothermic, but was potentiated by 46% while hypothermic; rate of twitch torque development and time to peak twitch were potentiated by 39% and 10% while normothermic, but 89% and 28% while hypothermic. Although voluntary contractile properties are generally impaired soon after normothermic fatigue, most were not after hypothermic fatigue. Furthermore, evoked contractile properties were generally higher 1 min after hypothermic fatigue. We conclude that the hypothermic condition slows the recovery of potentiated evoked contractile properties back to baseline values.

This study examines the linkages between board leadership structure in terms of CEO duality (CEOs who jointly serve as board chairs), the proportion of expert outside directors on the board (PENEDs) and voluntary corporate disclosures. Regression analyses of observations from 385 Hong Kong companies show that CEO duality is associated with lower levels of voluntary corporate disclosures. However, the negative CEO duality/voluntary disclosure association is weaker for firms with higher PENEDs suggesting that the expertise of non-executive directors (NEDs) moderates the CEO duality/corporate disclosures relationship.

The production of heat, i.e., thermogenesis, is a significant component of the metabolic rate, which in turn affects weight gain and health. Thermogenesis is linked to physical activity (PA) level. However, it is not known whether intrinsic exercise capacity, aging, and long-term voluntary running affect core body temperature. Here we use rat models selectively bred to differ in maximal treadmill endurance running capacity (Low capacity runners, LCR and High capacity Runners, HCR), that as adults are divergent for aerobic exercise capacity, aging, and metabolic disease risk to study the connection between PA and body temperature. Ten high capacity runner (HCR) and ten low capacity runner (LCR) female rats were studied between 9 and 21 months of age. Rectal body temperature of HCR and LCR rats was measured before and after 1-year voluntary running/control intervention to explore the effects of aging and PA. Also, we determined whether injected glucose and spontaneous activity affect the body temperature differently between LCR and HCR rats at 9 vs. 21 months of age. HCRs had on average 1.3°C higher body temperature than LCRs (p < 0.001). Aging decreased the body temperature level of HCRs to similar levels with LCRs. The opportunity to run voluntarily had a significant impact on the body temperature of HCRs (p < 0.001) allowing them to maintain body temperature at a similar level as when at younger age. Compared to LCRs, HCRs were spontaneously more active, had higher relative gastrocnemius muscle mass and higher UCP2, PGC-1α, cyt c, and OXPHOS levels in the skeletal muscle (p < 0.050). These results suggest that higher PA level together with greater relative muscle mass and higher mitochondrial content/function contribute to the accumulation of heat in the HCRs. Interestingly, neither aging nor voluntary training had a significant impact on core body temperature of LCRs. However, glucose injection resulted in a lowering of the body temperature of LCRs (p < 0.050), but not that of HCRs. In conclusion, rats born with high intrinsic capacity for aerobic exercise and better health have higher body temperature compared to rats born with low exercise capacity and disease risk. Voluntary running allowed HCRs to maintain high body temperature during aging, which suggests that high PA level was crucial in maintaining the high body temperature of HCRs.
