Objectives: To compare the skeletal benefits associated with gymnastics between ulna and radius.
Methods: 19 retired artistic gymnasts, aged 18-36 years, were compared to 24 sedentary women. Bone mineral content (BMC), total and cortical bone area (ToA, CoA), trabecular and cortical volumetric density (TrD, CoD) and cortical thickness (CoTh) were measured by pQCT at the 4% and 66% forearm.
Results: At the 4% site, BMC and ToA were more than twice greater at the radius than ulna whereas at the 66% site, BMC, ToA, CoA, CoTh and SSIpol were 20 to 51% greater at the ulna than radius in both groups (p<0.0001). At the 4% site, the skeletal benefits in BMC of the retired gymnasts over the non-gymnasts were 1.9 times greater at the radius than ulna (p<0.001), with enlarged bone size at the distal radius only. In contrast, the skeletal benefits at the 66% site were twice greater at the ulna than radius for BMC and CoA (p<0.01).
Conclusion: Whereas the skeletal benefits associated with long-term gymnastics were greater at the radius than ulna in the distal forearm, the reverse was found in the proximal forearm, suggesting both bones should be analysed when investigating forearm strength.

The fabrication of enzyme electrodes using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) has attracted considerable interest because of the spatial control over the enzyme immobilization. A model system of glucose oxidase covalently bound to a gold electrode modified with a SAM of 3-mercaptopropionic acid was investigated with regard to the effect of fabrication variables such as the surface topography of the underlying gold electrode, the conditions during covalent attachment of the enzyme and the buffer used. The resultant monolayer enzyme electrodes have excellent sensitivity and dynamic range which can easily be adjusted by controlling the amount of enzyme immobilized. The major drawback of such electrodes is the response which is limited by the kinetics of the enzyme rather than mass transport of substrates. Approaches to bringing such enzyme electrodes into the mass transport limiting regime by exploiting direct electron transfer between the enzyme and the electrode are outlined.

A significant number of biosorption studies on the removal of heavy metal from aqueous solutions have been conducted worldwide. Nearly all of them have been directed towards optimizing biosorption parameters to obtain the highest removal efficiency while the rest of them are concerned with the biosorption mechanism. Combinations of FTIR, SEM-EDX, TEM as well as classical methods such as titrations are extremely useful in determining the main processes on the surfaces of biosorbents. Diverse functional groups represented by carboxyl, hydroxyl, sulfate and amino groups play significant roles in the biosorption process. Solution pH normally has a large impact on biosorption performance. In brief, ion exchange and complexation can be pointed out as the most prevalent mechanisms for the biosorption of most heavy metals.

The performance of ceramic membranes with pore sizes of 0.05 and 0.10 mm in purifying limed and partially clarified sugar cane juice was investigated under different operating conditions. From various operating conditions and strategies, switching off the permeate for 5 seconds for every 5 minutes (S5sT5 m) by an automated control valve provided higher flux. From the three pH experiments conducted on the 0.05 mm membrane, the best performance was observed at a pH of 7.5. Amongst the four fouling models tested, the cake filtration model fitted the performance of both membranes with higher accuracy at a transmembrane pressure of 0.5 bar. Filtering the cane juice through the membrane reduced the turbidity by 99.7%, color by 15%, and the starch concentration by 80% as well as increased the purity by 1.4%. The effective cleaning chemical composition from experimental results showed that 1% NaOH and 3000 ppm NaOCl solution performed the best but only for the experiments that were treating limed and partially clarified juice at pH 7.5.

Refractive indices have been measured throughout the nematic phase of 4-n-pentyl-4'cyanobiphenyl (5CB) and the smectic A and nematic phases of 4-n-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8CB). The Vuks and Neugebauer methods of calculating the order parameter are compared. Without knowledge of the molecular polarisabilities it is only possible to calculate a quantity proportional to the order parameter, and within this limitation it is found that the two methods give identical results. The order parameter is scaled using the extrapolation method suggested by Haller [14]. Using a suitable average of the refractive indices and the density data of Gannon and Faber [9], it is shown that the Lorentz-Lorenz relation is obeyed over a 2 % density range in 5CB.

This paper investigates the enhancement of the sensitivity and adsorption efficiency of a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) biosensor that includes a layer of graphene sheet on top of the gold layer. For this purpose, biomolecular interactions of biotin-streptavidin with the graphene layer on the gold thin film are monitored. The performance of the LSPR graphene biosensor is theoretically and numerically assessed in terms of sensitivity and adsorption efficiency under varying conditions, including the thickness of biomolecule layer, number of graphene layers and operating wavelength. Enhanced sensitivity and improved adsorption efficiency are obtained for the LSPR graphene biosensor in comparison with its conventional counterpart. It is found that the LSPR graphene biosensor has better sensitivity with lower operating wavelength and larger number of graphene layers.

In this paper, we investigate the parameters selection for Eigenfaces. Our focus is on the eigenvectors and threshold selection issues. We will propose a systematic approach in selecting the eigenvectors based on relative errors of the eigenvalues for the covariance matrix. In addition, we have proposed a method for selecting the classification threshold that utilizes the information obtained from the training data set. Experimentation was conducted on two benchmark face databases, ORL and AMP, with results indicating that the proposed automatic eigenvectors and threshold selection methods produce better recognition performance in terms of precision and recall rates. Furthermore, we show that the eigenvector selection method outperforms energy and stretching dimension methods in terms of selected number of eigenvectors and computation cost.

We propose a simple technique for extracting camera motion parameters from a sequence of images. The method can estimate qualitatively camera pan, tilt, zoom, roll, and horizontal and vertical tracking. Unlike most other comparable techniques, the present method can distinguish pan from horizontal tracking, and tilt from vertical tracking. The technique can be applied to the automated indexing of video and film sequences.
