The thesis outlines and demonstrates the various aspects that contribute towards water quality management systems and the important use of storage/water quality models. The application of models is demonstrated through the functions that modelling components have on sustainable regional development, and through linkage with water quality systems.

3D depth estimation using wavelet analysis based stereo vision approach

A complete and highly robust 3D reconstruction algorithm based on stereo vision is presented. The developed system is capable of reconstructing dimensionally accurate 3D models of the objects and is very simple and cost effective due to its prominent software dependency and minimal hardware involvevment unlike existing systems.

Embodied energy modelling of individual buildings in Melbourne : the inherent energy-cost relationship

This thesis demonstrates a strong relationship between life cycle energy and life cycle cost based on an analysis of thirty recent Melbourne buildings. Embodied energy (initial cost) can be reliably modelled by construction cost (initial cost) and thus be readily available as early design advice, enabling more sustainable development.

Experimental analysis of friction in forming automotive coated steels

The thesis addressed and answered a number of key issues in the experimental analysis of friction in sheet forming operations. Conventional friction theories were linked with the properties of sheet coatings and the process geometries. Newly derived mathematical models extended the analysis of friction in sheet metal forming applications.

Composite crashworthy structures

This study presents an innovative finite element delamination model which successfully reproduced the experimental failure behaviour observed in axial crush testing. Tests were conducted on tubes manufactured by a novel composite curing process, resulting in the ability to cure tubular profiles in 7 minutes - 95% quicker than traditional autoclave curing.

Statistical properties and taxonomies of human untranslated exons

Two taxonomies for the accurate classification of human and predicted exons were produced. Based on these taxonomies important statistical properties of untranslated exons useful for improving automated genefinding efforts were calculated. Finally an important correlation between the energy and the information content in the human genome was identified.

Formalising a method for modelling critical infrastructure systems

This research delivers a multifaceted methodology that underpins a practical security analysis and system modelling framework applicable to critiquing modern critical infrastructure systems. The intent, to identify potential system security issues and gain operational insights that will contribute to improving system resilience, availability and ameliorate incident management responses for Australian critical infrastructure systems.

Investigation into and control of microwave induced thermal run-away

Analyses the mechanisms that cause thermal run-away in some materials. A control strategy was devised to provide effective temperature control independent of material characteristics. The set of control criteria derived from mathematical models allowed the control limits of a microwave processing system to calculated.

Symbolic computation and perfect fluids in general relativity

Focuses on two areas within the field of general relativity. Firstly, the history and implications of the long-standing conjecture that general relativistic, shear-free perfect fluids which obey a barotropic equation of state p = p(w) such that w + p = 0, are either non-expanding or non-rotating. Secondly the application of the computer algebra system Maple to the area of tetrad formalisms in general relativity.

Predictive modeling of student competency

Explores how machine learning techniques can be used to build effective student modeling systems with constrained development and operational overheads, by integrating top-down and bottom-up initiatives. Emphasizes feature-based modelling.

Formalizing the concept of entrepreneurial capacity

This study develops a definition of the concept of entrepreneurial capacity and formalizes it in two models explaining how value is created in the innovation process. The formalization integrates the influential opportunity-based definition of entrepreneurship research offered by Shane and Venkataraman (2000) with the consensus prevailing in the management, strategy, economics and entrepreneurship literatures that innovation is a process for transforming the inherent economic value of new knowledge into realized economic value for identified stakeholders. The linear flow and mathematical models presented in the study possess the clarity and richness required of a theoretical framework for generating and testing insightful hypotheses. This study, regarding Penrose (1959) more as theorist of entrepreneurship than of resources, deepens scepticism about the relevance to entrepreneurship of the literatures on the resource-based view of the firm (RBV) and dynamic capabilities (DC). Finally, the arguments and perspectives of the study imply several pedagogic possibilities and challenges for entrepreneurship educators.

Modelling of tooling wear in trim dies for AHSS

Using Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) in forming and cutting dies generates higher loads in tools. Tool wear is an issue when applying AHSS. This study investigates the effect of process parameters such as clearance, material properties and punch/die bluntness on contact pressure values and tool wear. Some desirable process parameters that minimise wear have been found.
