The removal of lower molecular weight organic compounds (LMWOC) from water is of increasing concern. While, nano-fi ltration (NF) is a good option, it removes only a fraction of the LMWOC. In this paper, NF experiments were conducted to remove oxalic acid and diuron in combination with coagulation using poly-aluminum chloride (PAC) as the coagulant. The results showed that this hybrid treatment system was effective in removing oxalic acid where almost a 100% removal effi ciency of oxalic acid was achieved. However, using PAC as coagulant to remove diuron from water was not effective. In order to improve the removal efficiency of diuron, 0.02 M NaCl was added to diuron and a 40% increase in the removal of diuron was achieved. Higher removal of diuron was achieved when the solution was treated with reverse osmosis (RO) when compared to the nano-filtration.

Substrate-induced coagulation (SIC) is a coating process based on self-assembly for coating different surfaces with fine particulate materials. The particles are dispersed in a suitable solvent and the stability of the dispersion is adjusted by additives. When a surface, pre-treated with a flocculant e.g. a polyelectrolyte, is dipped into the dispersion, it induces coagulation resulting in the deposition of the particles on the surface. A non-aqueous SIC process for carbon coating is presented, which can be performed in polar, aprotic solvents such as N-Methyl-2- pyrrolidinone (NMP). Polyvinylalcohol (PVA) is used to condition the surface of substrates such as mica, copperfoil, silicon-wafers and lithiumcobalt oxide powder, a cathode material used for Li-ion batteries. The subsequent SIC carbon coating produces uniform layers on the substrates and causes the conductivity of lithiumcobalt oxide to increase drastically, while retaining a high percentage of active battery material.

In this paper, first the fundamental concept of nano-optical biosensing is studied. Since Raman scattered signal is very weak to be recognized by current measuring equipments, the signal must be amplified. SPR and LSPR are utilized to enhance the incident field of the target molecules, to improve the sensitivity of the sensor. The paper focuses on the use of LSPR to enhance Raman signal in SERS technology. Different structures of nano-particles in LSPR to improve enhancement of the SERS signal are reviewed and compared.

A 0.79C-1.5Si-1.98Mn-0.98Cr-0.24Mo-1.06Al-1.58Co (wt%) steel was isothermally heat treated at 200°C for 10 days to form a nano-scale bainitic microstructure consisting of nanobainitic ferrite laths with high dislocation density and retained austenite films. The crystallographic analysis using TEM and EBSD revealed that the bainitic ferrite laths are close to the Nishiyama-Wassermann orientation relationship with the parent austenite. There was only one type of packet identified in a given transformed austenite grain. Each packet consisted of two different blocks having variants with the same habit plane, but different crystallographic orientations. The presence of fine C-rich clusters and Fe-C carbides with a wide range of compositions in bainitic ferrite was revealed by Three-dimensional Atom Probe Tomography (APT). The high carbon content of bainitic ferrite compared to the para-equilibrium level of carbon in ferrite, absence of segregation of carbon to the austenite/bainitic ferrite interface and absence of partitioning of substitutional elements between the retained austenite and bainitic ferrite were also found using APT.

The nano-bainitic microstructures were compared in a 0.79C-1.5Si-1.98Mn-0.24Mo-1.06Al (wt%) steel after isothermal heat-treatment and a Fe-0.2C-1.5Mn-1.2Si-0.3M0-0.6Al-0.02Nb (wt%) steel after controlled thermo-mechanical processing. The microstructure for both steels consisted of bainite. The microstructural characteristics of bainite, such as the morphology of the nano-bainite and thicknesses of bainitic ferrite and retained austenite layers, as a function of steel composition and processing was studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the nano-bainitic structure can be formed in the low alloy steel through thermomechanical processing. Atom probe tomography (APT) was employed as a powerful technique to determine local composition distributions in three dimensions with atomic resolution. The important conclusions from the APT research were that the carbon content of bainitic ferrite is higher than expected from paraequilibrium level of carbon in ferrite for both steels and that Fe-C clusters and fine particles are formed in the bainitic ferrite in both steels despite the high level of Si.

Dielectrophoresis, the induced motion of polarisable particles in non-homogenous electric field, has been proven as a versatile mechanism to transport, immobilise, sort and characterise micro/nano scale particle in microfluidic platforms. The performance of dielectrophoretic (DEP) systems depend on two parameters: the configuration of microelectrodes designed to produce the DEP force and the operating strategies devised to employ this force in such processes. This work summarises the unique features of curved microelectrodes for the DEP manipulation of target particles in microfluidic systems. The curved microelectrodes demonstrate exceptional capabilities including (i) creating strong electric fields over a large portion of their structure, (ii) minimising electro-thermal vortices and undesired disturbances at their tips, (iii) covering the entire width of the microchannel influencing all passing particles, and (iv) providing a large trapping area at their entrance region, as evidenced by extensive numerical and experimental analyses. These microelectrodes have been successfully applied for a variety of engineering and biomedical applications including (i) sorting and trapping model polystyrene particles based on their dimensions, (ii) patterning carbon nanotubes to trap low-conductive particles, (iii) sorting live and dead cells based on their dielectric properties, (iv) real-time analysis of drug-induced cell death, and (v) interfacing tumour cells with environmental scanning electron microscopy to study their morphological properties. The DEP systems based on curved microelectrodes have a great potential to be integrated with the future lab-on-a-chip systems.

The performance of ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with molecular weight cut off (MWCO) of 1000 and 3500 Da in clarifying sugar cane juice was investigated, as well as the performance of a nanofiltration (NF) membrane with MWCO of 200 Da and a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane in concentrating sugar cane juice. For both cases the sugar cane juice had been limed and partially clarified. The UF membranes were found to be effective at clarifying the sugar cane juice in terms of purity rise and reduction in turbidity, colour, starch and protein. A purity rise of approximately 6 was achieved by both UF membranes at trans-membrane pressures (TMP) from 15 to 25 bar. However, Brix reduction in the permeate was between 14.5 and 41.85% and 12.11 and 26.52% for 1000 Da and 3500 Da membranes respectively. For the 200 Da and RO membranes the Brix in the concentrate was increased from 7.65 to 12.3 after 3 hours of operation for the 200 Da membrane at a TMP of 10 bar, whilst the Brix in the concentrate was increased from 15.65 to 27.6 after 3 hours of operation for the RO membrane at a TMP of 35 bar. Overall, UF membranes were found to be unsuitable for clarification of sugar cane juice since significant amount of Brix is reduced in the permeate, whilst RO membranes were found to be effective for concentration of sugar cane juice.

In this paper, the effects of silver nano-spheroid size and elongation on plasmon wavelength are investigated, and the plasmon eigenvalues are formulated as a function of the radius and aspect ratio of the nano-particles. These can be used in eigenmode plasmonic interaction method to study interaction of nano-particles on each other at dipole resonance frequencies.. It is demonstrated that plasmon eigenvalues are partially linear with respect to radius and aspect ratio of the nano-spheroids. In addition, it is shown that the maximum enhancement occurs in the direction of the polarization angle.

The microstructure consisted of nanobainitic ferrite laths with a high dislocation density and retained austenite films having extensive twins. The crystallographic analysis using TEM and EBSD revealed that the bainitic ferrite laths are close to the Nishiyama-Wassermann orientation relationship with their parent austenite. There was only one type of packet identified in a given transformed austenite grain. Each packet consisted of two different blocks having variants with the same habit plane, but different crystallographic orientations. Atom Probe Tomography (APT) revealed that the carbon content of nanobainitic ferrite laths was much higher than expected from the para-equilibrium level. This was explained due to the long heat treatment time, which led to the formation of fine Fe-C clusters on areas with high dislocation densities in bainitic ferrite laths.
