In situ neutron diffraction of two binary Mg alloys, Mg-0.5 wt.% Y and Mg-2.2 wt.% Y have been carried out in compression. The experimental data has been modelled using the elastoplastic self-consistent methodology in order to determine the critical resolved shear stress for basal slip, second-order 〈c + 〉 pyramidal slip and {101̄2} twinning. It was found that the addition of Y strengthens all three of the deformation modes examined. However, increasing the Y concentration from 0.5% to 2.2% showed no additional hardening in the basal slip and {101̄2} twinning modes, indicating that solute strengthening of these deformation modes is already exhausted by a concentration of 0.5% Y. Second-order pyramidal slip showed additional solute hardening at the higher concentration. © 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd. on behalf of Acta Materialia Inc. All rights reserved.

Al and Mg alloys are widely used in industry as main lightweight alloys. They have excellent properties, such as low density, high ductility, and high specific strength, and so on. Generally speaking, Mg alloys are better than Al alloys. However the corrosion of Mg alloys is much more difficult to control compared Al alloys. Therefore to combine these two lightweight alloys, a composite-like structure is an ideal solution since Al alloys can be used as protective coatings for Mg alloys. Compound casting is a realistic technique to get this coating system. In the current study, we numerically study the compound casting using finite element method (FEM) to make these two alloys, a composite-like structure, satisfy requirements to resist corrosion required from industry, in which the aluminum layer is acting as a protective coating for the magnesium substrate. Several finite element models have been developed by using the birth and death element technique and we focus on compound casting-induced residual stresses in the compounded structure. The numerical results obtained from the proposed finite element models show the distribution profiles of thermal residual stresses. We found the major factors influencing the residual stresses are the temperature to pre-heating the Al substrate and the thickness of Mg deposits. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

AA2024-Tx is one of the most common high-strength aluminium alloys used in the aerospace industry. This article reviews current understanding of the microstructure of sheet AA2024-T3 and chronicles the emergence of new compositions for constituent particles as well as reviews older literature to understand the source of the original compositions. The review goes on to summarise older and more recent studies on corrosion of AA2024-T3, drawing attention to areas of corrosion initiation and propagation. It pays particular attention to modern approaches to corrosion characterisation as obtained through microelectrochemical techniques and physicochemical characterisation, which provide statistical assessment of factors that contribute to corrosion of AA2024. These approaches are also relevant to other alloys.

The extrusion behaviour, texture and tensile ductility of five binary Mg-based alloys have been examined and compared to pure Mg. The five alloying additions examined were Al, Sn, Ca, La and Gd. When these alloys are compared at equivalent grain size, the La- and Gd-containing alloys show the best ductilities. This has been attributed to a weaker extrusion texture. These two alloying additions, La and Gd, were found to also produce a new texture peak with View the MathML source parallel to the extrusion direction. This “rare earth texture” component was found to be suppressed at high extrusion temperatures. It is proposed that the View the MathML source texture component arises from oriented nucleation at shear bands.

Atom probe tomography (APT) has been carried out on three magnesium-based alloys: M1 (Mg-1 wt pct Mn), AZ31(Mg-3 pct Al-1 pct Zn), and ME10 (Mg-1 pct Mn- 0.4 pct misch metal). The aims of this experiment were to measure the composition of the matrix and to investigate solute clustering in the matrix of the three different alloys. For AZ31, the matrix composition was variable but close to the bulk composition. For ME10 and M1, the matrix was depleted in alloying additions, with the remainder residing in precipitates. Most alloying additions were found to exhibit clustering to some extent, with misch metal having the strongest partitioning behavior to clusters. Solute clusters did not appear to affect mechanical twinning. It has been proposed that the clustering behavior of misch metal contributes to its ability to modify the recrystallization texture.

In this study, Mg-xCa (x = 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0 and 20.0 %, wt.%, hereafter) and Mg-1Ca-1Y alloys were investigated as new biodegradable bone implant materials. The compressive strength, ultimate strength and hardness of the Mg-Ca alloys increased, whilst the corrosion rate and biocompatibility decreased, with the increase of the Ca content in the Mg-Ca alloys; higher Ca content caused the Mg-Ca alloy to become brittle. Solutions of simulated body fluid (SBF) and modified minimum essential media (MMEM) with the immersion of Mg-xCa and Mg-1Ca-1Y alloys showed strong alkalisation. The yttrium addition to the Mg-Ca alloys does not improve the corrosion resistance of the Mg-1Ca-1Y alloy as expected compared to the Mg-1Ca alloy. It is suggested that Mg-Ca alloys with Ca additions less than 1.0 wt.% exhibited good biocompatibility and low corrosion rate.

The present work examines the extrusion and mechanical properties of MExlOO alloys, which contain levels of rare earth alloying additions up to 0.4 wt%. It is shown that these alloys can display the high extrudability of alloy Ml with strengths nearing those of AZ31. Most importantly, the grades display high room temperature ductility; values of total tensile elongation as high as 30% have been observed. These benefits derive from a combination of grain refinement and texture weakening.

This data collection addresses the problem of low ductility in magnesium alloys, preventing their wider use. It examines a series of dilute alloys in order to determine the effect of composition on the extrusion behaviour and texture, and on the room temperature tensile ductility.

This paper investigated the microstructural characterization and mechanical properties of Mg-Zr-Ca alloys prepared by hot-extrusion for potential use in biomedical applications. Mg-Zr-Ca alloys were fabricated by commercial pure Mg (99.9%), Ca (99.9%), and master Mg-33% Zr alloy (mass%). The microstructural characterization of the hot-extruded Mg-Zr-Ca alloys was examined by X-ray diffraction analysis and optical microscopy, and the mechanical properties were determined from tensile tests. The experimental results indicate that the hot-extruded Mg-Zr-Ca alloys with 1 mass% Ca are composed of one single phase and those alloys with 2 mass% Ca consist of both Mg2Ca and α phase. The hot-extruded Mg-Zr-Ca alloys exhibit equiaxed granular microstructures and the hot-extrusion process can effectively increase both the tensile strength and ductility of Mg-Zr-Ca alloys. The hot-extruded Mg-1Zr-1Ca alloy (mass%) exhibits the highest strength and best ductility among all the alloys, and has much higher strength than the human bone, suggesting that it has a great potential to be a good candidate for biomedical application.

Mg–Zr–Ca alloys were developed for new biodegradable bone implant materials. The microstructure and mechanical property of the Mg–xZr–yCa [x=0·5, 1·0% and y=1·0, 2·0% (wt-% hereafter)] alloys were characterised by optical microscopy, compressive and hardness tests. The in vitro cytotoxicity of the alloys was assessed using osteoblast-like SaOS2 cells. The corrosion behaviour of these alloys was evaluated by soaking the alloys in simulated body fluid (SBF) and modified minimum essential medium (MMEM). Results indicated that the mechanical properties of the Mg–Zr–Ca are in the range of the mechanical properties of natural bone. The corrosion rate and biocompatibility decreases with the increase in the Ca content in the Mg–Zr–Ca alloys. The solutions of SBF and MMEM with the immersion of the Mg–Zr–Ca alloys show strong alkalisation. The Zr addition to the Mg–Zr–Ca alloys leads to an increase in the corrosion resistance, compressive strength and the ductility of the alloys, and a decrease in the elastic modulus of the Mg–Zr–Ca alloys.

This paper investigated the microstructures and compressive properties of hot-rolled Mg-Zr-Ca alloys for biomedical applications. The microstructures of the Mg-Zr-Ca alloys were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis and optical microscopy, and the compressive properties were determined from compressive tests. The experimental results indicate that the hot-rolled Mg-Zr-Ca alloys with 1% Ca are composed of one single α phase and those alloys with 2% Ca consist of both Mg2Ca and α phase. The hot-rolled Mg-Zr-Ca alloys exhibit typical elongated microstructures with obvious fibrous stripe, and have much higher compressive strength and lower compressive modulus than pure Mg. All the studied alloys have much higher compressive yield strength than the human bone (90~140 MPa) and comparable modulus with the human bone, suggesting that they have a great potential to be good candidates for biomedical applications.

Mg-Zn binary alloys with concentrations between 0 and 2.8wt% Zn have been prepared and processed via hot rolling and annealing to produce specimens with a strong basal texture and a range of grain sizes. These have been deformed in tension, a condition in which the deformation is dominated by prismatic slip. This data has been used to assess the Hall-Petch parameter as a function of Zn concentration for deformation dominated by prismatic slip. Pure magnesium showed non-linear Hall-Petch behaviour at large grain sizes, and this is compared to the values for prismatic slip measured on single crystals. The differences between critical resolved shear stress measurements made through single crystal, polycrystal and mathematical modelling techniques are also discussed.

The microstructures, mechanical properties, corrosion behaviour and biocompatibility of the Mg-Zr-Ca alloys have been investigated for potential use in orthopaedic applications. The microstructures of the alloys were examined using X-ray diffraction analysis, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical properties of Mg-Zr-Ca alloys were determined from compressive tests. The corrosion behaviour has been investigated using an immersion test and electrochemical measurement. The biocompatibility was evaluated by cell growth factor using osteoblast-like SaOS2 cell. The experimental results indicate that the hot-rolled Mg-Zr-Ca alloys exhibit much finer microstructures than the as-cast Mg-Zr-Ca alloys which show coarse microstructures. The compressive strength of the hot-rolled alloys is much higher than that of the as-cast alloys and the human bone, which would offer appropriate mechanical properties for orthopaedic applications. The corrosion resistance of the alloys can be enhanced significantly by hot-rolling process. Hot-rolled Mg-0.5Zr-1Ca alloy (wt %) exhibits the lowest corrosion rate among all alloys studied in this paper. The hot-rolled Mg-0.5Zr-1Ca and Mg-1Zr-1Ca alloys exhibit better biocompatibility than other studied alloys and possess advanced mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, suggesting that they have a great potential to be good candidates for orthopaedic applications. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
