The idea of Rome in Fascist art and architecture : the decorative program of the Palazzo dei Congressi in EUR, Rome

This paper engages with the notion of interspace by examining an understudied and unpublished cycle of mosaics and frescoes destined for the main hall of the Palazzo dei Congressi in Rome’s south-western suburb of EUR, a major building project by Roman architect Adalberto Libera. It first provides a socio-historical and aesthetic background to the building of EUR as Rome’s international exposition of 1942, which aimed to celebrate the achievements of Italian (and fascist) civilisation. It then focuses on the concept of Romanità (or Roman-ness) as a mythical and idealised past that was engaged on a number of levels as a teleological foundation for the advent (and eternity) of fascist rule. This past was adopted, interpreted and made manifest at the urban scale in the master plan of EUR, at the architectural scale in the buildings and at the interior scale in the decorative programs incorporated in each. It argues that the Palazzo dei Congressi allows us to gain further insight into the notion of interspace as it exemplifies this on a number of physical, symbolic and temporal levels. Physically, in the urban space, architectural form and interiors; symbolically, in the content and compositional layout of the mosaics; and temporally, in the use of historical elision and conflation between mythical pasts and idealised present.

Effect of personal and cultural diversity on outdoor thermal comfort perception

The urban squares are the gathering places where people interact with each other. Therefore, they are seen as important places contributing in the integration and social cohesion within societies. To ensure equality in urban places, designers are to take into considerations the need of the diverse nature of different users. This task is hard especially in global cities where populations are characterized by their cultural plurality. To ensure the creation of successful urban places, the designer is to take the comfort of users into consideration. However, the outdoor thermal comfort is not easily assessed as it examines the climatic and personal variables for users. This paper aims to contribute in assessing the thermal comfort for users of different personal and cultural background in Melbourne city, Australia as one of the global cities characterized by the diversity and plurality of its population due to migration. A case study approach is adopted to examine the users’ thermal comfort within the contextual variables of Federation Square. Multiple sources of evidence such as climate measurements, observations and questionnaires will be used to ensure the validity of results. The findings are to contribute in the quality and equality of design for outdoor urban places in multicultural cities.

Bisexual parents and family diversity : findings from the work, love, play study

This article reports on findings from the Work, Love, Play study, an Australian/New Zealand study of same-sex attracted parents. There were 48 parents in this study who identified as bisexual. There was a diversity of contexts in which people in this sample were parenting: heterosexual relationships, same-sex relationships, coparenting with ex-partners or nonpartners, and sole parenting. A large number of these bisexual parents had experience of divorce or separation since having children, but most reported positive aspects to their parenting relationships with ex-partners. Very few people in this study reported that bisexual identity created difficulties for them as a parent.
