A modelling study of transient, buoyancy-driven exchange flow over a descending barrier

Results are presented from a series of model studies of the transient exchange flow resulting from the steady descent of an impermeable barrier separating initially-quiescent fresh and saline water bodies having density ρ0 and ρ0 + (Δρ)0, respectively. A set of parametric laboratory experiments has been carried out (i) to determine the characteristic features of the time-dependent exchange flow over the barrier crest and (ii) to quantify the temporal increase in the thickness and spatial extent of the brackish water reservoir formed behind the barrier by the outflowing, partly-mixed saline water. The results of the laboratory experiments have been compared with the predictions of a theoretical model adapted from the steady, so-called maximal exchange flow case and good qualitative agreement between theory and experiment has been demonstrated. The comparisons indicate that head losses of between 7% and 3% are applicable to the flow over the ridge crest in the early and late stages, respectively, of the barrier descent phase, with these losses being attributed to mixing processes associated with the counterflowing layers of fresh and saline water in the vicinity of the ridge crest. The experimental data show (and the theoretical model predictions confirm) that (i) the dimensionless time of detection tdet (g′/Hb)1/2 of the brackish water pool fed by the dense outflow increases (at a given distance from the barrier) with increasing values of the descent rate parameter g'Hb/(dhb/dt)2 and (ii) the normalised thickness δ(x,t)/Hb of the pool at a given reference station increases monotonically with increasing values of the modified time (t - tdet)/(Hb/g′) 1/2, with the rate of thickening decreasing with increasing values of the descent rate parameter g'Hb (dhb/dt)2. Here, g′ = (g/ρ0) (Δρ)0 is the modified gravitational acceleration, Hb is the mean depth of the water and dhb/dt denotes the rate of descent of the barrier height hb with elapsed time t after the two water bodies are first brought into contact. © 2004 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

The value of ethnoecological knowledge of the Minahasans: repositioning traditional biocultural knowledge in Indonesian environmental planning

Indonesian strategic and statutory environmental regimes have drawn directly from conventional Western models of environmental planning and natural resource management. These models are often at odds with, do not connect with, nor appreciate generational traditional biocultural knowledge and information from regionally-specific Indigenous communities in Indonesia. This knowledge, and the voice of the custodians of this knowledge, has been overlooked and circumvented in the name of broadscale nationalistic co-ordinated strategic planning. The problem is that nationalist planning, in a multicultural archipelago full of a diverse set of communities often with their own languages, dialects, cultural relationships to landscape, and mixed connectivity to different cohorts of colonial (European and Asian) and religious affiliations means that a deep understanding of environmental information at local and regional level is negated and denied legitimacy. This paper offers a platform to discuss this issue, the difficulty of nationalistic planning and its failings at the Minahasan regional level in Indonesia, and the wealth of cultural and environmental answers the Minahasan culture can bring to the table to better management its landscape sustainably and culturally. This paper’s purpose is to question conventional and generic environmental planning systems in Indonesia and charts an alternate culturally-attuned agenda that can offer to inform and better manage landscapes sustainably and culturally. The tipping points are deep questions about how to regionally manage landscapes sustainably and culturally in deference to a nationalistic agenda before the latter dooms the former producing a 'one-fits all' or generic Indonesian biogeographical landscape devoid of cultural nuances.

Charismatic leadership through the eyes of followers

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to try and explain what charismatic leadership might be, byfinding out more about the other side of the relationship, the perspective of followers and their attitudes,feelings and responses to leaders.Design/methodology/approach – The authors examined followers’ implicit narratives of their livedexperiences of charismatic leadership in organizational settings and examined metaphors for thisexperience.Findings – Most respondents identified with positive affect, a form of love story; a minority experiencednegative affect, especially anger; and some experienced both positive and negative emotions. Theauthors suggest that if one adopts a certain identity within the context of a dramatic narrative, one mightbe attributed with charismatic qualities by followers. In this way, it is suggested that charismaticleadership might be less a ‘‘gift from God’’ and more a ‘‘gift from followers’’.Originality/value – Most existing research on charismatic leadership has an essentialist orientation thatcharacterizes it as leader behavior, leader communication or follower dependency. Manifesto of a defeated poet

This feature-length experimental film is the result of an intimate collaboration between Bosnian filmmaker/poet/painter/musician/performace artist Saidin Salkic (On Karasevdah: Srebrenica Blues, 2007 & Konvent 2010) and veteran Australian experimental filmmaker and film educator John Cumming (Obsession, Recognition & Sabotage 1985-87, First time Tragedy Second Tome Farce, 1989, The Hollow Centre 1999). Created over a period of four years it draws on the traditions and possibilities of improvisation – in cinematography, experimental cinema, dance, music and performance – with moments of intensity and repose, fluidity and halting re-composure. Cumming’s camera and Salkic’s movement work in front of it are at once expressionistic and in dialectical tension as are Salkic’s poetry, his haunting improvisations on piano and melodica and Cumming’s industrial soundscapes. Improving golf performance with a warm up conditioning programme

Objectives: To determine whether a golf specific warm up programme (both immediately prior to play and after performing it five times a week for 5 weeks) improved performance in 10 male golfers compared with 10 controls matched for age, sex, and handicap.

Methods: Twenty male golfers were matched for age (±2 years) and handicap (±1 stroke). Club head speed was assessed by two dimensional video analysis in a laboratory setting. In week 1, all golfers performed 10 strokes. In weeks 2 and 7, the controls underwent the same procedure as in week 1. The exercise group performed the golf specific warm up followed by their 10 strokes. Between weeks 2 and 7, the exercise group performed the specially designed warm up five times a week for 5 weeks.

Results: The mean club head speeds of the exercise group improved at each testing week. Between weeks 1 and 2, golfers in the exercise group improved their club head speed on average by 3–6 m/s (12.8%), and between weeks 1 and 7, they increased their club head speeds by 7–10 m/s (24.0%). With the exception of one golfer whose club head speed varied by 1.7 m/s, the mean club head speeds of the golfers in the control group hardly varied over the testing period (range: 0.3–0.8 m/s). A significant difference (p = 0.029) was found between the mean club head speeds of the exercise and control groups over the duration of the study, and a significant interaction over time (p<0.001) was also found.

Conclusions: This study has shown that golfers’ performances will be significantly improved by undertaking a golf specific warm up programme compared with not performing the warm up.

Separoh jalan (halfway)

The sign that marked the exact mid-point of the journey between Launceston and Hobart was located at the far side of the road in one of the overtaking lanes on the highway. The road that connected the two main towns in the state of Tasmania was full of overtaking lanes, special lanes that allowed drivers to pass others going in the same direction at slower speeds. Even though the north-south highway was wide and newly surfaced, there was only one lane in each direction. The passing lanes brought relief to a driver trapped behind a truck with a heavy load or who was in a hurry like Rusli that morning. He had only been in the southernmost Australian state for four months but had travelled back and forth between Launceston and Hobart nearly 20 times in a car belonging to the University of Tasmania where he worked. For some reason, he had never before noticed the marker which was only a knee-high sign with three sides. The one facing north to Launceston said H100 while the one facing south to Hobart said L100. Rusli had been hired as a lecturer for one academic year of about eight months to teach at the Indonesian programme at the university. Because Indonesian was the one language offered on both campuses, at least once a week Rusli had to drive from Launceston where he was appointed.

Supermarkets as a setting to promote health eating : some lessons learnt in Victoria

Issue addressed: Supermarkets are a potential setting in which to deliver nutrition promotion to the community. A pilot project was able to examine the requirements for health authorities to form partnerships with other sectors and opportunities and limitations of using industry- based communication strategies to promote healthy eating messages. Methods: Pre-intervention interviews helped determine communication strategies. Post-intervention interviews were used to assess content and appropriateness of nutrition resources, collaboration between key participants, satisfaction with training and barriers/promoters to implementation. An intercept survey with consumers measured the impact of the intervention. Results: The survey of more than 1,120 women indicated only limited success. 12% of respondents from the intervention supermarkets had watched demonstrations and 20% had noticed the recipe leaflets, with only 5% able to name the promotion. Supermarket owners, representatives from participating food companies and demonstrators were supportive of the concept and content used in the promotion and qualitative analysis provides indicators for similar promotions. Conclusions: Health authorities considering 'partnerships' with the food/supermarket industry should recognise the diversity of roles and responsibilities of the organisations involved in the supply of food through the retail market and allow for long term planning when working with them. Head office of the supermarket group has a key coordinating role, however, individual supermarkets will be driven by financial returns. So what?: The recognition and trust in the name of health authorities by consumers means that organisations value an association with them.

Welcome 2 my deaf world

Presents the story of two students at the Victorian College for the Deaf (VCD). They are Bethany Rose and Scott Masterson, two ordinary teenagers, who live in the extraordinary world of the deaf. But, to both, it is a world of rich culture, full of human possibility. It has its own language, Auslan, with its own rules, challenges and inspirations. It is a culture which very few people know or fully understand. This documentary gives footage of the last few months of Bethany and Scott's schooling at the college. These teenagers have dreams of success in life, and are eager to enter the wider world. The Victorian College for the Deaf is the first school for deaf kids, as well as being the only school in Australia where the Australian sign language (Auslan) is used from Prep to Year 12, helping its students prepare for life in the adult world.

Quantum bioenergetics, mental boundaries and affective response : a randomized placebo-controlled pilot study

Previous research has demonstrated the effects of ostensible subtle energy on physical systems and subjective experience. However, one subtle energy technique that has been neglected by previous studies, despite anecdotal support for its efficacy, is Quantum BioEnergetics (QBE). Furthermore, personality traits that influence subtle energy effects remain unclear, and previous experimental studies have not investigated the constructs of Love and Joy, despite qualitative and anecdotal reports indicating that these variants of positive affect are essential elements of the subtle energy experience. The aim of the present study was to investigate experimentally the effects of QBE, and the personality trait Mental Boundaries, on positive and negative affect. Participants (N = 69) were administered the Boundary Questionnaire Short Form to quantify Boundaries, and then randomly assigned to one of three conditions: QBE, Placebo ("sham"), or Control. Affect was retrospectively assessed using the Positive and Negative Affect subdimensions of the Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI). As predicted, a significant multivariate effect for condition was found with regards to the PCI subdimensions: Joy, Sexual Excitement, Love, Anger, Sadness, and Fear. In contrast to our expectations, a significant multivariate effect was not found for Boundaries with regards to the combined PCI-Affect variables. As hypothesized, significant interactions were found between condition and Boundaries with regards to Positive Affect, Love and Joy, with the QBE/Thin Boundaries factorial combination associated with the highest mean scores for these dependent variables. It will be prudent to ascertain whether these results are replicated in a larger sample and a placebo condition that improves on the standard randomized placebocontrolled protocols of previous subtle energy research.

Measuring life balance through discrepancy theories and subjective well-being

The concept of life balance implies that there is some optimal time allocation between the various forms o(human activity we engage in each day. So life balance can be measured by the size of the discrepancy between how we should and how we do allocate our time.
If someone chooses to spend all of their discretionary time writing poetry, is this a balanced life? Many people would say no. They would judge such a life to be imbalanced because life is full of competing demands, and writing poetry all day means that other aspects of life are neglected.
But is this just an imposed value judgment, or does the concept of a balanced life have deeper meaning? The answer must lie with whatever we use to measure the outcome. Any conclusion that balance is better than imbalance must be based on empirical evidence. So, what should be measured?

The letter S

In 'The Letter S' Paul Carter overlays a number of parallel journeys. A group of actors meet with a young playwright to work on a his new play: theirs is an artistic journey. The playwright's father wrote a radio play which they listen to: it is Memory As Desire about the journey in search of the inland sea, and the mutual incomprehension of indigenous and European cultures. His new play is based on the Odyssey and in particular the relationship between father and son: the son searching for the lost father. Just as the search for the inland sea is ill-fated, so to the cast of actors conclude that their search for a new theatre is futile. The indigenous people had no letter 'S', leading to misunderstanding. The explorers failed to listen to the land. The characters in the version of the Odyssey are washed away in a sea of sibilants. This is a work packed full of ideas, puns, and concrete poetry propelled by desire and loss, but also hope.
