Due to the huge growth of the World Wide Web, medical images are now available in large numbers in online repositories, and there exists the need to retrieval the images through automatically extracting visual information of the medical images, which is commonly known as content-based image retrieval (CBIR). Since each feature extracted from images just characterizes certain aspect of image content, multiple features are necessarily employed to improve the retrieval performance. Meanwhile, experiments demonstrate that a special feature is not equally important for different image queries. Most of existed feature fusion methods for image retrieval only utilize query independent feature fusion or rely on explicit user weighting. In this paper, we present a novel query dependent feature fusion method for medical image retrieval based on one class support vector machine. Having considered that a special feature is not equally important for different image queries, the proposed query dependent feature fusion method can learn different feature fusion models for different image queries only based on multiply image samples provided by the user, and the learned feature fusion models can reflect the different importances of a special feature for different image queries. The experimental results on the IRMA medical image collection demonstrate that the proposed method can improve the retrieval performance effectively and can outperform existed feature fusion methods for image retrieval.

This paper investigates the problem of location and velocity detection of a mobile agent using Received Signal Strength (RSS) measurements captured by geographically distributed seed nodes. With inherently nonlinear power measurements, we derive a powerful linear measurement scheme using an analytical measurement conversion technique which can readily be used with RSS measuring sensors. We also employ the concept of sensor fusion in conjunction for the case of redundant measurements to further enhance the estimation accuracy.

In this paper, we present some practical experiences on implementing an alert fusion mechanism from our project. After investigation on most of the existing alert fusion systems, we found the current body of work alternatively weighed down in the mire of insecure design or rarely deployed because of their complexity. As confirmed by our experimental analysis, unsuitable mechanisms could easily be submerged by an abundance of useless alerts. Even with the use of methods that achieve a high fusion rate and low false positives, attack is also possible. To find the solution, we carried out analysis on a series of alerts generated by well-known datasets as well as realistic alerts from the Australian Honey-Pot. One important finding is that one alert has more than an 85% chance of being fused in the following five alerts. Of particular importance is our design of a novel lightweight Cache-based Alert Fusion Scheme, called CAFS. CAFS has the capacity to not only reduce the quantity of useless alerts generated by intrusion detection system, but also enhance the accuracy of alerts, therefore greatly reducing the cost of fusion processing. We also present reasonable and practical specifications for the target-oriented fusion policy that provides a quality guarantee on alert fusion, and as a result seamlessly satisfies the process of successive correlation. Our experiments compared CAFS with traditional centralized fusion. The results showed that the CAFS easily attained the desired level of simple, counter-escapable alert fusion design. Furthermore, as a lightweight scheme, CAFS can easily be deployed and excel in a large amount of alert fusions, which go towards improving the usability of system resources. The force between twophosphatidylcholine bilayers is measured as a function of their separation, showing a strong hydration repulsion at short range, as previously reported by LeNeveu et al. (LeNeveu, D.M., Rand, R.P., Parsegian, V.A. and Gingell, D. (1977) (Biophys. J. 18, 209-230). The experimental technique also allows direct observation of the molecular process by which two bilayers fuse into one.

To tackle the problem of increasing numbers of state transition parameters when the number of sensors increases, we present a probabilistic model together with several parsinomious representations for sensor fusion. These include context specific independence (CSI), mixtures of smaller multinomials and softmax function representations to compactly represent the state transitions of a large number of sensors. The model is evaluated on real-world data acquired through ubiquitous sensors in recognizing daily morning activities. The results show that the combination of CSI and mixtures of smaller multinomials achieves comparable performance with much fewer parameters.

Data acquired from multiple sensors can be fused at a variety of levels: the raw data level, the feature level, or the decision level. An additional dimension to the fusion process is temporal fusion, which is fusion of data or information acquired from multiple sensors of different types over a period of time. We propose a technique that can perform such temporal fusion. The core of the system is the fusion processor that uses Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to perform temporal fusion. We evaluate the performance of the fusion system on two real world datasets: 1) accelerometer data acquired from performing two hand gestures and 2) NOKIA’s benchmark dataset for context recognition. The results of the first experiment show that the system can perform temporal fusion on both raw data and features derived from the raw data. The system can also recognize the same class of multisensor temporal sequences even though they have different lengths e.g. the same human gestures can be performed at different speeds. In addition, the fusion processor can infer decisions from the temporal sequences fast and accurately. The results of the second experiment show that the system can perform fusion on temporal sequences that have large dimensions and are a mix of discrete and continuous variables. The proposed fusion system achieved good classification rates efficiently in both experiments

A new online neural-network-based regression model for noisy data is proposed in this paper. It is a hybrid system combining the Fuzzy ART (FA) and General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) models. Both the FA and GRNN models are fast incremental learning systems. The proposed hybrid model, denoted as GRNNFA-online, retains the online learning properties of both models. The kernel centers of the GRNN are obtained by compressing the training samples using the FA model. The width of each kernel is then estimated by the K-nearest-neighbors (kNN) method. A heuristic is proposed to tune the value of Kof the kNN dynamically based on the concept of gradient-descent. The performance of the GRNNFA-online model was evaluated using two benchmark datasets, i.e., OZONE and Friedman#1. The experimental results demonstrated the convergence of the prediction errors. Bootstrapping was employed to assess the performance statistically. Analysis and fusion of social measurements is important to understand what shapes the public’s opinion and the sustainability of the global development. However, modeling data collected from social responses is challenging as the data is typically complex and heterogeneous, which might take the form of stated facts, subjective assessment, choices, preferences or any combination thereof. Model-wise, these responses are a mixture of data types including binary, categorical, multicategorical, continuous, ordinal, count and rank data. The challenge is therefore to effectively handle mixed data in the a unified fusion framework in order to perform inference and analysis. To that end, this paper introduces eRBM (Embedded Restricted Boltzmann Machine) – a probabilistic latent variable model that can represent mixed data using a layer of hidden variables transparent across different types of data. The proposed model can comfortably support largescale data analysis tasks, including distribution modelling, data completion, prediction and visualisation. We demonstrate these versatile features on several moderate and large-scale publicly available social survey datasets.

Multisource image fusion is usually achieved by repeatedly fusing source images in pairs. However, there is no guarantee on the delivered quality considering the amount of information to be squeezed into the same spatial dimension. This paper presents a fusion capacity measure and examines the limits at which fusing more images will not add further information. The fusion capacity index employs Mutual Information (MI) to measure how far the histogram of the examined image is from a uniformly distributed histogram of a saturated image.

Isolated instability of the index and middle finger carpometacarpal joints is uncommon. An unpublished injury pattern in a consecutive series of 13 elite boxers is described, with mid-term radiological and functional results of two novel surgical treatments. All the boxers (from Australia and the UK) were unable to compete owing to pain and weakness. Four boxers were managed initially by open reduction and temporary K-wire fixation. Nine boxers underwent primary carpometacarpal arthrodesis. All were able to return to their previous level of competition. One boxer who had undergone a soft tissue reconstruction competed at international level but required an arthrodesis because of recurrent symptoms. In elite boxers, simple reduction and wiring may be appropriate for an acute injury causing index or middle finger carpometacarpal joint instability, however, arthrodesis is the treatment of choice when instability and degenerative changes are present.
