Formation of defects in hexagonal and cubic boron nitride (h -BN and c -BN, respectively) under low-energy argon or nitrogen ion-bombardment has been studied by near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) around boron and nitrogen K -edges. Breaking of B-N bonds for both argon and nitrogen bombardment and formation of nitrogen vacancies, VN, has been identified from the B K -edge of both h -BN and c -BN, followed by the formation of molecular nitrogen, N2, at interstitial positions. The presence of N 2 produces an additional peak in photoemission spectra around N 1s core level and a sharp resonance in the low-resolution NEXAFS spectra around N K -edge, showing the characteristic vibrational fine structure in high-resolution measurements. In addition, several new peaks within the energy gap of BN, identified by NEXAFS around B and N K -edges, have been assigned to boron or nitrogen interstitials, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. Ion bombardment destroys the cubic phase of c -BN and produces a phase similar to a damaged hexagonal phase. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

An electrochemical approach to the formation of a protective surface film on Mg alloys immersed in the ionic liquid (IL), trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium–bis 2,4,4-trimethylpentylphosphinate, was investigated in this work. Initially, cyclic voltammetry was used with the Mg alloy being cycled from OCP to more anodic potentials. EIS data indicate that, under these circumstances, an optimum level of protection was achieved at intermediate potentials (e.g., 0 or 0.25 V versus Ag/AgCl). In the second part of this paper, a small constant bias was applied to the Mg alloy immersed in the IL for extended periods using a novel cell design. This electrochemical cell allowed us to monitor in situ surface film formation on the metal surface as well as the subsequent corrosion behaviour of the metal in a corrosive medium. This apparatus was used to investigate the evolution of the surface film on an AZ31 magnesium alloy under a potential bias (between ±100 mV versus open circuit) applied for over 24 h, and the film evolution was monitored using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A film resistance was determined from the EIS data and it was shown that this increased substantially during the first few hours (independent of the bias potential used) with a subsequent decrease upon longer exposure of the surface to the IL. Preliminary characterization of the film formed on the Mg alloy surface using ToF-SIMS indicates that a multilayer surface exists with a phosphorous rich outer layer and a native oxide/hydroxide film underlying this. The corrosion performance of a treated AZ31 specimen when exposed to 0.1 M NaCl aqueous solution showed considerable improvement, consistent with electrochemical data.

The formation of autonomous mobile robots to an arbitrary geometric pattern in a distributed fashion is a fundamental problem in formation control. This paper presents a new asynchronous, memoryless (oblivious) algorithm to the formation problem via distributed optimization techniques. The optimization minimizes an appropriately defined difference function between the current robot distribution and the target geometric pattern. The optimization processes are performed independently by individual robots in their local coordinate systems. A movement strategy derived from the results of the distributed optimizations guarantees that every movement makes the current robot configuration approaches the target geometric pattern until the final pattern is reached.

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae WD-40 repeat protein Swd2p associates with two functionally distinct multiprotein complexes: the cleavage and polyadenylation factor (CPF) that is involved in pre-mRNA and snoRNA 3′ end formation and the SET1 complex (SET1C) that methylates histone 3 lysine 4. Based on bioinformatic analysis we predict a seven-bladed β-propeller structure for Swd2p proteins. Northern, transcriptional run-on and in vitro 3′ end cleavage analyses suggest that temperature sensitive swd2 strains were defective in 3′ end formation of specific mRNAs and snoRNAs. Protein–protein interaction studies support a role for Swd2p in the assembly of 3′ end formation complexes. Furthermore, histone 3 lysine 4 di-and tri-methylation were adversely affected and telomeres were shortened in swd2 mutants. Underaccumulation of the Set1p methyltransferase accounts for the observed loss of SET1C activity and suggests a requirement for Swd2p for the stability or assembly of this complex. We also provide evidence that the roles of Swd2p as component of CPF and SET1C are functionally independent. Taken together, our results establish a dual requirement for Swd2p in 3′ end formation and histone tail modification.

Patternable, electrically conductive coatings having a superhydrophobic and superoleophobic surface have been prepared by one-step vapour-phase polymerisation of polypyrrole in the presence of a fluorinated alkyl silane directly on fibrous substrates. The coated fabrics showed a surface resistance of 0.5-0.8 kΩ □-1 with water and hexadecane contact angles of 165° and 154°, respectively.

In the current study, a novel approach was employed to produce a unique combination of ultrafine ferrite grains and low temperature bainite in a low carbon steel with a high hardenability. The thermomechanical route included warm deformation of supercooled austenite followed by reheating in the ferrite region and then cooling to bainitic transformation regime (i.e. 400-250°C). The resultant microstructure was ultrafine ferrite grains (i.e. <4μm) and very fine bainite consisting of bainitic ferrite laths with high dislocation density and retained austenite films. This microstructure offers a unique combination of ultimate tensile strength and elongation due to the presence of ductile fine ferrite grains and hard low temperature bainitic ferrite laths with retained austenite films. The microstructural characteristics of bainite were studied using optical microscopy in conjunction with scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques.

Silver decahedra have been successfully synthesized with high yield via a photochemical reaction using blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as the exciting light source. The decahedra display distinct properties with respect to the ability of light scattering. The photochemical growth process of silver decahedra was monitored by both extinction and scattering spectral evolution. A suggested formation mechanism of silver decahedron is discussed.

The nano-bainitic microstructures were compared in a 0.79C-1.5Si-1.98Mn-0.24Mo-1.06Al (wt%) steel after isothermal heat-treatment and a Fe-0.2C-1.5Mn-1.2Si-0.3M0-0.6Al-0.02Nb (wt%) steel after controlled thermo-mechanical processing. The microstructure for both steels consisted of bainite. The microstructural characteristics of bainite, such as the morphology of the nano-bainite and thicknesses of bainitic ferrite and retained austenite layers, as a function of steel composition and processing was studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the nano-bainitic structure can be formed in the low alloy steel through thermomechanical processing. Atom probe tomography (APT) was employed as a powerful technique to determine local composition distributions in three dimensions with atomic resolution. The important conclusions from the APT research were that the carbon content of bainitic ferrite is higher than expected from paraequilibrium level of carbon in ferrite for both steels and that Fe-C clusters and fine particles are formed in the bainitic ferrite in both steels despite the high level of Si.
