This thesis examines the key question: can voluntary associations enhance democracy? It tests critical claims made by Habermas and others that voluntary associations have the potential to reinvigorate a public sphere in a state of atrophy. The thesis outlines the major theoretical arguments pertaining to these areas and then presents the results of empirical work within voluntary organisations. Specifically the thesis: Critically examines the concept of the public sphere, being a sphere between the state and civil society and investigates why theorists have advocated voluntary associations, claimed to be the core institutions of civil society, as sites where democratic ideals can be secured; Goes on to examine the concept of civil society and reviews the recent literature that has attempted to define and analyse the role of voluntary associations in contemporary society; Tests empirically the normative ideals that have been advocated on behalf of voluntary associations through the presentation of data obtained using qualitative methodology. The analysis of the data collected during interviews with key employees and members of six voluntary associations in Melbourne, Australia allows for a more informed knowledge regarding the key concepts and themes of the thesis. The thesis ends by directly addressing the following points: whether or not the public sphere is in a state of atrophy; the particular nature of voluntary associations contemporary engagement in the public sphere; and whether voluntary associations can indeed, be sites where democracy can be enhanced and democratic ideals be secured. It is concluded that voluntary associations operate within Habermasian public spheres, counterspheres, and postmodern public spheres and that unitary notions of the public sphere, such as those Habermas proposes, do not adequately explain voluntary associations engagement in the public sphere. Accordingly, it is concluded that voluntary associations have the potential to invigorate public spheres, though not in ways that many theorists writing on the subject suggest.

An analysis was made of the Charles Sturt University Academic Office building at Thurgoona from a thermal comfort and energy viewpoint. It was found that the offices did not meet low energy criteria and some were uncomfortable for 30% to 85% of occupied hours.

Earth, water, wind and fire are the intrinsic elements which form the nucleus of life. These essential ingredients are fundamental to humankind as they are in making of pottery. In search for a complete scientific, philosophical or religious understanding, the melding and the transformation of the elements challenges thought and can conjure up abstract imagery. The focus of this paper is to provide an insight into the concept and the mystery surrounding the earthern substance, the vessel and the allegorical relationship that is shared with humankind. The connection between earth, the vessel and humankind involves a journey to rediscover our universal origins. I will expound the unifying conceptual links through my ceramics and an accompanying disseration.

A combination of linear polarisation resistance (LPR) and cyclic potentiodynamic polarisation (CPP) measurements demonstrated that the lanthanum-4 hydroxy cinnamate compound could inhibit both the cathodic and anodic corrosion reactions on mild steel surfaces exposed to 0.01 M NaCl solutions. However, the dominating response was shown to vary with inhibitor concentration. At the concentrations for which the highest level of protection was achieved, both REM-4 hydroxy cinnamate (REM being lanthanum and mischmetal) displayed a strong anodic behaviour for mild steel and their inhibition performance, including their resistance against localised attack, improved with time.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements and modelling were carried out so as to propose a simple electrical model and correlate the extracted parameters to the inhibition mechanism put forward for REM-cinnamate based compounds. The results supported the high corrosion inhibition performance of the compounds as well as the build-up of a protective film with time. Based on a two-layer model the results suggested that the upper layer of the inhibitor film seemed to offer less resistance to the diffusion of electrochemically active species than the highly resistive inner layer at the film/metal interface.
