In this paper, we investigate the potential of caching to improve quality of reception (QoR) in the context of continuous media applications over best-effort networks. Specifically, we investigate the influence of parameters such as loss rate, jitter, delay and area in determining a proxy's cache contents. We propose the use of a flexible cost function in caching algorithms and develop a framework for benchmarking continuous media caching algorithms. The cost function incorporates parameters in which, an administrator and or a client can tune to influence a proxy's cache. Traditional caching systems typically base decisions around static schemes that do not take into account the interest of their receiver pool. Based on the flexible cost function, an improvised Greedy Dual (GD) algorithm called GD-multi has been developed for layered multiresolution multimedia streams. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is evaluated by simulation-based performance studies. Performance of several caching schemes are evaluated and compared with those of the proposed scheme. Our empirical results indicate GD-multi performs well despite employing a generalized caching policy.

In this paper, we present our system for online context recognition of multimodal sequences acquired from multiple sensors. The system uses Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to recognize multimodal sequences of different lengths, embedded in continuous data streams. We evaluate the performance of our system on two real world datasets: 1) accelerometer data acquired from performing two hand gestures and 2) NOKIA's benchmark dataset for context recognition. The results from both datasets demonstrate that the system can perform online context recognition efficiently and achieve high recognition accuracy.

Data acquired from multiple sensors can be fused at a variety of levels: the raw data level, the feature level, or the decision level. An additional dimension to the fusion process is temporal fusion, which is fusion of data or information acquired from multiple sensors of different types over a period of time. We propose a technique that can perform such temporal fusion. The core of the system is the fusion processor that uses Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to perform temporal fusion. We evaluate the performance of the fusion system on two real world datasets: 1) accelerometer data acquired from performing two hand gestures and 2) NOKIA’s benchmark dataset for context recognition. The results of the first experiment show that the system can perform temporal fusion on both raw data and features derived from the raw data. The system can also recognize the same class of multisensor temporal sequences even though they have different lengths e.g. the same human gestures can be performed at different speeds. In addition, the fusion processor can infer decisions from the temporal sequences fast and accurately. The results of the second experiment show that the system can perform fusion on temporal sequences that have large dimensions and are a mix of discrete and continuous variables. The proposed fusion system achieved good classification rates efficiently in both experiments

The Clinical Support Systems Program (CSSP) includes the management of clinical practice using clinical and consumer pathways, outcome and performance indicators, clinical measurement and review in a continuous improvement cycle using the best available extant evidence. The Royal Australasian College of Physicians is testing the CSSP model through four consortia around Australia. There are 17 project sites in three States. The funded projects address major clinical problems including congestive heart failure and acute coronary syndromes, acute stroke management, and colorectal cancer care. There is some early evidence of the CSSP influencing change in areas beyond the bounds of the project settings and the College has developed a plan to promote wider adoption of best practice. This approach recognises the College’s role in providing Fellows with the practical tools of quality improvement, the means to collect data and compare their practice to other clinicians, while traversing the appropriate educational framework.

Random fluctuations of the electrical quantities (electrode potential and cell current) in electrochemical systems commonly are referred to as electrochemical noise (ECN). The ECN signal for the corrosion of mild steel in reinforced concrete specimen was analyzed with the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). The original signal was transformed into a time-frequency phase plane with colors representing the coefficients of the CWT. The signal shows a self-similarity structure in the phase plane. Through this way, the chaotic nature of corrosion process is manifested.

Variable compression ratio enables an engine to achieve increased efficiency at part loads, where the majority of driving occurs, without sacrificing full load power requirements or increasing the risk of engine knock. Although over 100 patents and patent applications exist none of these systems has been commercialized yet due to issues related to feasibility, cost and frictional loss. A new approach of a self controlling variable compression ratio connecting rod is presented that does not need a friction intensive external activation and that could even be retrofitted. The potential in fuel consumption and exhaust emission reduction as well as increased power and torque output for this concept has been verified in combustion simulations utilizing the latest research results related to the dynamic heat transfer in the combustion chamber from Professor Kleinschmidt from the University of Siegen, Germany. The self controlling variable compression ratio connecting rod allows the con rod to compress at high load conditions thereby increasing cylinder volume to alleviate combustion pressures and temperatures and therefore limit knock onset. The biggest efficiency gains can be achieved at medium load where the reduction of heat loss during the compression of the connecting rod plays a major role additional to the well known efficiency gains of an increased compression ratio. The combustion simulation results shows fuel consumption can be reduced by between 3% and 5% during part load and wide open throttle operation at various engine speeds. Emissions are also reduced significantly; particularly NOx and CO emissions were reduced by up to 35%.The self controlling variable compression ratio connecting rod allows the con rod to compress at high load conditions thereby increasing cylinder volume to alleviate combustion pressures and temperatures and therefore limit knock onset. In this paper, a sliding mode-like learning control scheme is developed for a class of single input single output (SISO) complex systems. First, the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy modelling technique is employed to model the uncertain complex dynamical systems. Second, a sliding mode-like learning control is designed to drive the sliding variable to converge to the sliding surface, and the system states can then asymptotically converge to zero on the sliding surface. The advantages of this scheme are that: 1) the information about the uncertain system dynamics and the system model structure is not required for the design of the learning controller; 2) the closed-loop system behaves with a strong robustness with respect to uncertainties; 3) the control input is chattering-free. The sufficient conditions for the sliding mode-like learning control to stabilise the global fuzzy model are discussed in detail. A simulation example for the control of an inverted pendulum cart is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

In this paper, a robust learning control is developed for a class of single input single output (SISO) nonlinear systems with T-S fuzzy model. It is seen that the proposed sliding mode learning control with the powerful Lipshitz-like condition can guarantee the stability, convergence and robustness of the closed-loop system without involving any assumptions on uncertain system dynamics. In addition, theconcept that the local system with the maximum membership function dominates the system dynamic behaviours helps to greatly simplify the control system design. It will be further seen that the continuous learning control ensures the advantage of chattering-free that may occur in conventional sliding mode systems. Simulation examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed learning control through the comparison with the H-infinity control.

This paper considers the exponential stabilization problem via static and dynamic output feedback controllers of linear systems with a time delay in both the state and input. By using a change of the state variable and combining with the Lyapunov-Krasovskii method, new sufficient conditions for exponential stabilization via static and dynamic output feedback controllers are proposed. The conditions are expressed in terms of matrix inequalities but with only one parameter needs to be tuned and therefore can be efficiently solved by incorporating an one-dimensional search method into the Matlab’s LMI toolbox. Two numerical examples are provided to illustrate the obtained results.

The impact of salmon farming on the environment has been widely studied; there is, however, no consensus on the magnitude and quality of these effects and little information on their extent over large salmon farming areas. Forty-three salmon farm sites of which 29 are in full operation and grouped in nine locations in southern Chile were evaluated. Using statistical methods (two-way anova), no effects were found on water column variables such as nitrate, ammonia, orthophosphate and chlorophyll, whereas they were significant on sediment variables such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and organic carbon (OC), among others. Natural variability evaluation of some parameters revealed that P in sediments had the lowest coefficient of variation (23.2%) when compared with N (65.2%), particulate organic matter (POM) (139%) and OC (39%), and showed more marked salmon farming effects with no locality effects. Four of the nine locations showed stronger effects on sediments, with average P values ranging from 150 to 230 mmol that were six to nine times higher than in control sites (25 mmol). Nitrogen and carbon in sediments, while showing significant effects on salmon farming, also showed locality effects that revealed other biogenic processes influencing sediment composition. Thus, P in sediments was proposed as a promising indicator of impact on salmon farming, although the relationship with fauna in sediments was not linear and somewhat variable; more research is therefore needed to understand such connections. Considering entire geographical locations, no relationship was found between sediment conditions under salmon cages and the condition of the water column at a farm. This may indicate the possibility of high dilution rates and recycling processes, which so far preclude the detection of more global impacts beyond the cages shadow.

Objectives:

The aim of this paper, is to present a case to develop and test emergency department (ED)-specific approaches to improve the sequential detection, recognition and timely escalation of care for ED patients who have deteriorated after their initial triage and assessment.

Results:
Managing the risk of clinical deterioration is a key feature of emergency care and underpins practice. However, although the epidemiology of deterioration in hospitalized ward patients has been well studied, the epidemiology of deterioration in ED patients is less understood. As ED workloads continue to increase, an emerging challenge for ED clinicians is how best to recognize and rapidly respond to deteriorating ED patients following triage and/or medical assessment. Rapid response systems for such patients exist in hospital wards; however, the use of rapid response systems in EDs is variable and largely unknown outside the UK.

Conclusion:
A systematic approach to the early recognition of, and response to, deteriorating ED patients across the entire ED trajectory of care remains untested. Given the complexities of the ED environment, ward-based models of recognizing and responding to deteriorating patients may not meet the specific needs of the ED.

What is the dependent variable in social media use? From a research perspective, this is a pertinent question to help explain and understand the behaviors that underpin the widespread adoption and use of social media throughout society. From a practical
perspective, the question is relevant for social media technology providers, for businesses that use social media, and community organizations that turn towards social media to reach out to their constituents. We propose the construct 'sense of community' as the dependent variable, which is reflected in four sub-constructs related to the behaviors of social media users. These behaviors are information seeking, hedonic activities, sustaining of strong ties and extending weak ties. Empirical evidence for these constructs comes from a survey of social media use by 18-25 year-olds in Indonesia, a ,country with exceptionally high utilization of social media. We outline practical implications of the  findings and areas for further theoretical development.

Teachers’ personality types are reflected in their classroom practices.  Personality type shows in the development of a teaching philosophy and what role the teacher plays in the classroom.  While research is showing a high frequency of particular personality types in the teaching profession, we are interested in looking within the profession to see whether particular personality types are attracted to particular educational environments, in this case Catholic Primary schools and State Primary schools.

Density-based means have been recently proposed as a method for dealing with outliers in the stream processing of data. Derived from a weighted arithmetic mean with variable weights that depend on the location of all data samples, these functions are not monotonic and hence cannot be classified as aggregation functions. In this article we establish the weak monotonicity of this class of averaging functions and use this to establish robust generalisations of these means. Specifically, we find that as proposed, the density based means are only robust to isolated outliers. However, by using penalty based formalisms of averaging functions and applying more sophisticated and robust density estimators, we are able to define a broader family of density based means that are more effective at filtering both isolated and clustered outliers. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. To reduce weight and improve passenger safety there is an increased need in the automotive industry to use Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS) for structural and crash components. However, the application of UHSS is restricted by their limited formability and the difficulty of forming them in conventional stamping. An alternative method of manufacturing structural auto body parts from UHSS is the flexible roll forming process, which allows the manufacture of metal sheet with high strength and limited ductility into complex and weight-optimized components. One major problem in the flexible roll forming of UHSS is the web-warping defect, which is the deviation in height of the web area over the length of the profile. It has been shown that web-warping is strongly dependant to the permanent longitudinal strain formed in the flange of the part. Flexible roll forming is a continuous process with many roll stands, which makes numerical analysis extremely time intensive and computationally expensive. An analytical model of web-warping is therefore critical to improve design efficiency during the early process design stage before FEA is applied. This paper establishes for the first time an analytical model for the prediction of web-warping for the flexible roll forming of a section with variable width. The model is based on evaluating longitudinal edge strain in the flange of the part. This information is then used in combination with a simple geometrical model to investigate the relationship between web-warping and longitudinal strain with respect to process parameters.
