This paper aims at optimally adjusting a set of green times for traffic lights in a single intersection with the purpose of minimizing travel delay time and traffic congestion. Neural network (NN) and fuzzy logic system (FLS) are two methods applied to develop intelligent traffic timing controller. For this purpose, an intersection is considered and simulated as an intelligent agent that learns how to set green times in each cycle based on the traffic information. The training approach and data for both these learning methods are similar. Both methods use genetic algorithm to tune their parameters during learning. Finally, The performance of the two intelligent learning methods is compared with the performance of simple fixed-time method. Simulation results indicate that both intelligent methods significantly reduce the total delay in the network compared to the fixed-time method.

Fuzzy logic system (FLS) is the method applied to develop the intelligent traffic timing controller. Finally, The performance of the intelligent FLC is compared with the performance of a FLC with predefined parameters and three simple fixed-time controller. In order to alleviate the traffic congestion and reduce the complexity of traffic control and management, it is necessary to exploit traffic sub-areas division which should be effective in planing traffic. Some researchers applied the K-Means algorithm to divide traffic sub-areas on the taxi trajectories. However, the traditional K-Means algorithms faced difficulties in processing large-scale Global Position System(GPS) trajectories of taxicabs with the restrictions of memory, I/O, computing performance. This paper proposes a Parallel Traffic Sub-Areas Division(PTSD) method which consists of two stages, on the basis of the Parallel K-Means(PKM) algorithm. During the first stage, we develop a process to cluster traffic sub-areas based on the PKM algorithm. Then, the second stage, we identify boundary of traffic sub-areas on the base of cluster result. According to this method, we divide traffic sub-areas of Beijing on the real-word (GPS) trajectories of taxicabs. The experiment and discussion show that the method is effective in dividing traffic sub-areas.

Molecular dynamics (MD) together with the adaptive biasing force (ABF) and metadynamics free energy calculation methods was used to investigate the permeation properties of salt water through poly(amide) thin film composite reverse osmosis membranes. The thin films were generated by annealing an amorphous cell of poly(amide) chains through an MD method. The MD results showed they have typical structural properties of the active layer of thin film composite membranes and comparable water diffusivity (2.13×10-5cm2/s for the film with a density of 1.06g/cm3) and permeability (9.27×10-15cm3cm/cm2sPa) to experimental data. The simulations of water permeation through the films under different transmembrane pressures revealed the behaviours of water molecules in the thin films and the dynamic regimes of water permeation, including Brownian diffusion, flush and jump diffusion regimes. The intermolecular interactions of water and ions with poly(amide) chains showed a strong dependence on the local structure of films. The attraction between water and ploy(amide) molecules can be up to 8.5kcal/mol in dense polymer regions and 5kcal/mol in the pores of about 3nm. The ABF and metadynamics simulations produced the profiles of free energy potential of water and ions along the depth of the thin films, which provided important information for quantitatively determining the barrier energy required for water permeation and rejection of ions. The thin film with a density of 1.06g/cm3 and a thickness of 6nm offers a rejection to Na+ but a slight absorption of Cl- (0.25kcal/mol) at 0.3-0.4nm distance to its surface. Water molecules must overcome 63kcal/mol energy to move to the centre of the film. The dependences of the barrier energy and the water-polymer interaction energy on the local free volume size in the thin film were analysed. The simulations of water permeation under high transmembrane pressures showed a nonlinear response of the concentration and distribution of water molecules in the film to the imposed pressure. Compaction of the film segments close to the porous substrate and water congestion in dense regions significantly influenced the water permeation when the membrane was operated under pressures of more than 3.0MPa.

Traffic congestion in urban roads is one of the biggest challenges of 21 century. Despite a myriad of research work in the last two decades, optimization of traffic signals in network level is still an open research problem. This paper for the first time employs advanced cuckoo search optimization algorithm for optimally tuning parameters of intelligent controllers. Neural Network (NN) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) are two intelligent controllers implemented in this study. For the sake of comparison, we also implement Q-learning and fixed-time controllers as benchmarks. Comprehensive simulation scenarios are designed and executed for a traffic network composed of nine four-way intersections. Obtained results for a few scenarios demonstrate the optimality of trained intelligent controllers using the cuckoo search method. The average performance of NN, ANFIS, and Q-learning controllers against the fixed-time controller are 44%, 39%, and 35%, respectively.

Software-Defined Network (SDN) is a promising network paradigm that separates the control plane and data plane in the network. It has shown great advantages in simplifying network management such that new functions can be easily supported without physical access to the network switches. However, Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM), as a critical hardware storing rules for high-speed packet processing in SDN-enabled devices, can be supplied to each device with very limited quantity because it is expensive and energy-consuming. To efficiently use TCAM resources, we propose a rule multiplexing scheme, in which the same set of rules deployed on each node apply to the whole flow of a session going through but towards different paths. Based on this scheme, we study the rule placement problem with the objective of minimizing rule space occupation for multiple unicast sessions under QoS constraints. We formulate the optimization problem jointly considering routing engineering and rule placement under both existing and our rule multiplexing schemes. Via an extensive review of the state-of-the-art work, to the best of our knowledge, we are the first to study the non-routing-rule placement problem. Finally, extensive simulations are conducted to show that our proposals significantly outperform existing solutions.

An optimal design of Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) traffic signal controller is presented in this paper. The proposed controller aims to adjust a set of green times for traffic lights in a single intersection with the purpose of minimizing travel delay time and traffic congestion. The ANFIS controller is trained, to learned how to set green times for each traffic phase. This intelligent controller uses the Cuckoo Search (CS) algorithm to tune its parameters during the learning pried. Evaluating the performance of the proposed controller in comparison with the performance of a FLS controller (FLC) with predefined rules and membership functions, and also three fixed-Time controllers, illustrates the better performance of the optimal ANFIS controller against the other benchmark controllers.

An accurate estimation of pressure drop due to vehicles inside an urban tunnel plays a pivotal role in tunnel ventilation issue. The main aim of the present study is to utilize computational intelligence technique for predicting pressure drop due to cars in traffic congestion in urban tunnels. A supervised feed forward back propagation neural network is utilized to estimate this pressure drop. The performance of the proposed network structure is examined on the dataset achieved from Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulation. The input data includes 2 variables, tunnel velocity and tunnel length, which are to be imported to the corresponding algorithm in order to predict presure drop. 10-fold Cross validation technique is utilized for three data mining methods, namely: multi-layer perceptron algorithm, support vector machine regression, and linear regression. A comparison is to be made to show the most accurate results. Simulation results illustrate that the Multi-layer perceptron algorithm is able to accurately estimate the pressure drop.

This paper proposes a Q-learning based controller for a network of multi intersections. According to the increasing amount of traffic congestion in modern cities, using an efficient control system is demanding. The proposed controller designed to adjust the green time for traffic signals by the aim of reducing the vehicles’ travel delay time in a multi-intersection network. The designed system is a distributed traffic timing control model, applies individual controller for each intersection. Each controller adjusts its own intersection’s congestion while attempt to reduce the travel delay time in whole traffic network. The results of experiments indicate the satisfied efficiency of the developed distributed Q-learning controller.
