System monitoring and fault diagnosis capabilities are the most important aspects in improving safety and reliability of automatic control systems. This research proposed new methodologies on fault diagnosis and estimation for complex uncertain systems. As a result of this research, complex industrial plants can now be more effectively controlled.

This research considers information systems development (ISD) projects as complex adaptive systems. We investigate the question whether complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory is relevant as a theoretical foundation for understanding ISD, and if so, which kind of understanding can be achieved by utilizing the theory? We introduce key concepts of CAS theory such as interaction, emergence, interconnected autonomous agents, selforganization, co-evolution, poise at the edge of chaos, time pacing, and poise at the edge of time to analyse and understand ISD in practice. We demonstrate the strength of such a CAS approach through an empirical case study presentation and analysis. While our work contributes to a complexity theory of ISD, the case examination also provides practical advice derived from this perspective to successfully cope with complexity in ISD in an adaptive manner.

This article is concerned with the problem of state observer for complex large-scale systems with unknown time-varying delayed interactions. The class of large-scale interconnected systems under consideration is subjected to interval time-varying delays and nonlinear perturbations. By introducing a set of argumented Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals and using a new bounding estimation technique, novel delay-dependent conditions for existence of state observers with guaranteed exponential stability are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). In our design approach, the set of full-order Luenberger-type state observers are systematically derived via the use of an efficient LMI-based algorithm. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the result

The lack of knowledge of how resilience management supports enterprise system (ES) projects accounts for the failure of firms to leverage their investments in costly ES implementations. Using a structured-pragmatic- situational (SPS) case study research approach, this paper reports on an investigation into the resilience management of a large utility company as it implemented an ES upgrade. Drawing on the literature and on the case study findings, we developed a process-based resilience management framework that involves three strategies (developing situation awareness, demystifying threats, and executing restoration plans) and four organisational capabilities that transform resilience management concepts into practices. We identified the crucial phases of ES upgrade implementation and developed indicators for how different strategies and capabilities of resilience management can assist managers at different stages of an ES upgrade. This research advances the state of existing knowledge by providing specific and verifiable propositions for attaining a state of resilience, the knowledge being grounded in the empirical reality of a case study. Moreover, the framework offers ES practitioners a roadmap to better identify appropriate responses and levels of preparedness.

Complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory is gaining mainstream recognition in development policy and management. This article looks to the correlations between development theory and CAS theory to support an argument for the validity of community level development as a complex adaptive system. The article describes some theoretical and practical implications of using CAS theory as a framework for community level development. This includes a call for researchers and practitioners to understand more thoroughly the contextualised nature of development, and the communities in which development interventions are implemented.

In recent decades we have seen enormous increases in the capabilities of software intensive systems, resulting in exponential growth in their size and complexity. Software and systems engineers routinely develop systems with advanced functionalities that would not even have been conceived of 20 years ago. This observation was highlighted in the Critical Code report commissioned by the US Department of Defense in 2010, which identified a critical software engineering challenge as theability to deliver “software assurance in the presence of...architectural innovation and complexity, criticality with respect to safety, (and) overall complexity and scale”.

Software quality management (SQM) is the collection of all processes that ensure that software products, services, and life cycle process implementations meet organizational software quality objectives and achieve stakeholder satisfaction. SQM comprises three basic subcategories: software quality planning, software quality assurance (SQA), and software quality control and software process improvement. This chapter provides a general overview of the SQA domain and discuss the related concept. A conceptual model for software quality framework is provided together with the current approaches for SQA. The chapter concludes with some of the identified challenges and future challenges regarding SQA.
