The development and application of computational data mining techniques in financial fraud detection and business failure prediction has become a popular cross-disciplinary research area in recent times involving financial economists, forensic accountants and computational modellers. Some of the computational techniques popularly used in the context of - financial fraud detection and business failure prediction can also be effectively applied in the detection of fraudulent insurance claims and therefore, can be of immense practical value to the insurance industry. We provide a comparative analysis of prediction performance of a battery of data mining techniques using real-life automotive insurance fraud data. While the data we have used in our paper is US-based, the computational techniques we have tested can be adapted and generally applied to detect similar insurance frauds in other countries as well where an organized automotive insurance industry exists.

Multi-frame super-resolution algorithms aim to increase spatial resolution by fusing information from several low-resolution perspectives of a scene. While a wide array of super-resolution algorithms now exist, the comparative capability of these techniques in practical scenarios has not been adequately explored. In addition, a standard quantitative method for assessing the relative merit of super-resolution algorithms is required. This paper presents a comprehensive practical comparison of existing super-resolution techniques using a shared platform and 4 common greyscale reference images. In total, 13 different super-resolution algorithms are evaluated, and as accurate alignment is critical to the super-resolution process, 6 registration algorithms are also included in the analysis. Pixel-based visual information fidelity (VIFP) is selected from the 12 image quality metrics reviewed as the measure most suited to the appraisal of super-resolved images. Experimental results show that Bayesian super-resolution methods utilizing the simultaneous autoregressive (SAR) prior produce the highest quality images when combined with generalized stochastic Lucas-Kanade optical flow registration.

This research is concerned with the comparative cost of building structural frames in Australia. The research has been undertaken to evaluate the cost performance of a number of technologies that are typically used in medium-rise commercial buildings of ten storeys. The research methodology is based on pricing a number of standard building frame designs in five Australian cities. The results represent the cost of producing the same building using different building construction designs. By utilising a standard model, project variables like building quality, ground conditions and access were eradicated, thereby facilitating an unbiased comparison of cost performance. The second stage of the research invoiced a focus group of industry experts who were asked to validate the results of the cost study. In addition, participants of the focus group were asked to comment on the preferred construction practice for each of the typical building designs. Results suggest that post-tensioned in situ concrete frames have the best cost performance for most buildings. However, other designs can have good cost performance under some circumstances. Findings suggest that the Australian construction industry has long cultural preference for the use of in situ concrete in structural frames.

Project and problem-based learning (PBL) has been widely recognised as an active, collaborative, cumulative and integrative learning approach that engages learners, motivates team creativity and centres on practical education. On the other hand, traditional lecture-tutorial teaching is often criticised for being a passive, surface learning and exam-focused approach. In spite of these evidence-based observations and claims over the years, the traditional lecture-tutorial teaching approach still dominates as the preferred teaching approach at Australian universities. This study sets up a control environment to compare these two teaching and learning approaches by analysing data from students' actual performance, course evaluation and expectation in two large undergraduate engineering courses in 2009 and 2010. The evidence reported in this study is broadly interesting in that both courses were taught by the same teaching staff using two entirely different learning and teaching approaches to the same cohort of students in the same semester within the same degree program. The analysis shows that there are significant differences between the students' actual performance, course evaluation and their expectation. Such conflicting differences may be some of the reasons that may negatively impact teaching staff deterring them from switching to PBL from traditional lecture-tutorial teaching.

Falling at speed onto a tarmac surface during cycling can cause abrasion and laceration of the skin and body tissue. Motorcycle clothing designed to reduce or avoid this type of injury has traditionally been made of animal leather as it has well known resistance to abrasion. In the last 20 years there has been an emergence of textile clothing reinforced with high performance/tenacity fibres such as those made from polyamides, aramids, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene and liquid crystal. Almost no comparative work has been undertaken to provide insight into the level of protection these clothing layers can provide.
This work has used a CE standard test method to evaluate a number of abrasion resistant textile pant products and compare them with a leather race product. It analysed the protective fabric layer structure for mass, thickness, construction method and resistance to abrasion.
Structures manufactured from high tenacity fibres performed better than those from lower tenacity ones. Fabric construction method and mass per unit area were the two key variables in providing an abrasion protective layer. Structures manufactured from knitted para-aramid fibres performed better than their woven counterparts due to the method of fabric failure. Several well designed protective layers performed at a similar level to that of leather; however, most garments tested failed to meet the lower level European standard of abrasion resistance (CE level 1), which may put their wearer at risk in the advent of a collision.

Through comparative studying on LiFePO4/C preparation process of adding carbon source in precursor and pre-sintered material, marked as LFP-1 (in-situ carbon coating) and LFP-2 respectively, by means of C-S test, XRD, SEM, BET, Raman, the effects of carbon content, morphology, particle size and surface carbon structure on the electrochemical performance of LiFePO4/C cathodes were investigated. SEM images showed that particle sizes of LFP-1 and LFP-2 are about 10μm and 100nm respectively. The EIS and galvnostatic charge-discharge tests indicated that LFP-1 has lower charge transfer resistance (Rct), better rate and cycle performance than that of LFP-2, which can be attributed to the different microstructure and the higher degree of graphitized carbon of LiFePO4/C. Raman spectroscopic analysis showed that the ratio of the ID/IG and Asp3/Asp2 of LFP-1 is lower that of LFP-2, which means the degree of graphitized carbon of LFP-1 is higher than that of LEP-2. These results have important significance for improving the overall performance of olivine cathode materials for lithium ion batteries.

A series of norbornane containing amphiphiles was synthesized, their lipophilicity corresponding to neutral and cationic forms was then investigated using reverse phase HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography). This series of amphiphiles incorporated varied lipophilic chain length and also varied distances between the polar/cationic head group from the norbornane scaffold. Our investigation included studying the impact of the stationary phase as a replication of a membrane for both cationic and neutral amphiphiles. The choice of stationary phase was shown to be a very important consideration for this type of measurement. In this connection, C18, Cyano and Polar columns were all investigated, the cyano column was observed to be the optimal stationary phase for the comparison of both charged and neutral amphiphiles.

Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are extensively used to ensure the dynamic stability of power systems through the modulation of excitation signals supplied to synchronous generators. This paper presents a comparative study of two different PSSs: STAB1 and IEEEST. The stabilizers are designed for the linearized model of a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system with different loads. Both time-and frequency-domain simulations are carried out to investigate the performance of these stabilizers. For all PSSs, the time-domain simulations are performed by applying a three-phase short-circuit fault at the terminal of the synchronous generator. These simulation results are compared against the open-loop characteristics of the SMIB system where no PSS is implemented. Simulation results demonstrate that the speed-fed PSS provides more damping as compared to frequency- and power-fed stabilizers.

This article will explore the European roots of the doctrine of specific performance and the influence of transformative constitutionalism on these in recent times. The question whether specific performance is available as of right (as in the civil law), or only subject to judicial discretion (as in the common law), will be investigated. The demonstrated impact of constitutional rights on contract law in the mixed system of South Africa will be contrasted with developments in English and Australian contract law, where the common-law rules are more deeply entrenched and the potential scope for human rights-based development of these is arguably smaller, though still important. The article will argue, using comparative rules on specific performance as an example, that the concept of a duty of good faith or contractual fairness is likely to play a greater role in future in all three of the countries under consideration, reducing the common/civil/mixed legal systems divide.

Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is an important concern in Photovoltaic (PV) systems. As PV systems have a high cost of energy it is essential that they are operated to extract the maximum possible power at all times. However, under non-uniform environmental conditions, which frequently arise in the outdoor environment, many MPPT techniques will fail to track the global peak power. This review paper discusses conventional MPPT techniques designed to operate under uniform environmental conditions and highlights why these techniques fail under non-uniform conditions. Following this, techniques designed specifically to operate under non-uniform environmental conditions are analysed and compared. Simulation results which compare the performance of the common Perturb and Observe (P&O) method, the Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) and the Simulated Annealing (SA) MPPT approaches under non-uniform environmental conditions are also presented. The research presented in this review indicates that there is no single technique which can achieve reliable global MPPT with low cost and complexity and be easily adapted to different PV systems.

International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) cross-national studies (FIMS, SIMS and TIMSS) show that gender differences in mathematical achievements and attitudes have decreased considerably over thirty years (Hanna, 2000), however, mathematics is still historically stereotyped as a male domain with crucial evidence supporting this belief (Forgasz, Leder, & Kloosterman, 2009). Previous research showed that gender differences in mathematics participation, performance and achievement existed widely in the majority of English speaking countries, specifically favouring boys (Forgasz, 1992; Hyde, Fennema, & Lamon, 1990; Tiedemann, 2000). Hyde, Lindberg, Linn, Ellis and Williams (2008) pointed out that the stereotype that females lack mathematical ability persists and is widely held by parents and teachers.Mathematics teaching materials play an important role in mathematics teaching and learning. The contents within mathematical teaching materials are rational, and deliver both explicit and implicit information. The explicit information refers to mathematics knowledge that students can learn from textbooks, while the latter one, also named as hidden curriculum, contains social and cultural messages. Hidden curriculum is a side effect of education. It has deep and long-term influences on students’ construction of math-gender stereotype that impact their future mathematicallearning (Zhang & Zhou, 2008). Therefore, this study will investigate Chinese andAustralian elementary mathematics teaching materials to explore the messages of gender equity and inequity delivered through hidden curriculum including names, images and problem-solving contexts. Based on the findings, practical implications concerning the promotion of equitable gender environments within elementary mathematics teaching materials from a cross-cultural perspective will be discussed.
