Measurements of the horizontal velocity component were made for a horizontal wall-jet emanating from a submerged sluice gate forming one side of a large flow compartment. The existence of large-scale vortex structures was quantified by spectral analysis of the velocity measurements taken at various distances from the floor of the flow compartment, for different measurement stations from the jet exit. Close to the jet exit, the spectra of the velocity measurements within the potential core exhibit multiple peaks. Further downstream, the spectra are more defined and peak at the same frequency, irrespective of whether the measurements were made within the potential core or the mixing layer. The spectral peak corresponds to the passage frequency of large-scale vortex structures. Downstream of the potential core, the peak frequencies of the velocity spectra increase as the measurement location was moved towards the floor of the flow compartment. The increase in peak frequencies is attributed to fluctuations associated with the wall boundary layer. Predictions of the mixing layer instabilities were made using linear stability analysis. The predictions are in good agreement with the observed vortex shedding frequencies in the mixing layer

Titanium alloys are of great demand in the aerospace and biomedical industries. Most the titanium products are either cast or sintered to required shape and finish machined to get the appropriate surface texture to meet the design requirements. Ti-6Al-4V is often referred as work horse among the titanium alloys due to its heavy use in the aerospace industry. This paper is an attempt to investigate and improve the machining performance of Ti-6Al-4V. Thin wall machining is an advance machining technique especially used in machining turbine blades which can be done both in a conventional way and using a special technique known as trochoidal milling. The experimental design consists of conducting trials using combination of cutting parameters such as cutting speed (vc), 90 and 120 m/min; feed/tooth (fz) of 0.25 and 0.35 mm/min; step over (ae) 0.3 and 0.2; at constant depth of cut (ap) 20mm and using coolant. A preliminary assessment of machinability of Ti-6Al-4V during thin wall machining using trochoidal milling is done. A correlation established using cutting force, surface texture and dimensional accuracy.

‘Seduction and Demise in East Berlin – a digital prototype for an immersive opera’ is a reflective case study of how digital technologies can be successfully applied to facilitate dynamic mediated partnerships and collaborations resulting in cutting-edge industry standard outcomes in the fields of design, performance and digital media. The ongoing use of online interaction throughout the development of the prototype facilitated a grammar of participation, collaboration and output between third year tertiary design students from Deakin University and independent Opera Company the Beggars Opera Co-Operative (BegOpCoOp), resulting in the achievement of positive professional outcomes for both project partners. Through this process, students at Deakin University Visual Communication Design department developed a normative working model that enabled a swift engagement with and response to the creative and strategic challenges that come with applying contemporary design practice in a current industry context. BegOpCop, as the industry partner, were able to use the digital collaborative process as a springboard to interrogate and innovate their own practice as producers of contemporary operatic repertoire and to develop exciting new digital and design-savvy creative collateral with which to seek further production partners, taking them to the next professional level as a growing arts organisation.

Physical inactivity is a potent stimulus for vascular remodeling, leading to a marked decrease in conduit artery diameter. However, little is known about the impact of physical inactivity on artery wall thickness or wall:lumen ratio or the potential of exercise countermeasures to modify artery wall thickness. The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of 60 days of bed rest, with or without exercise countermeasures, on carotid and superficial femoral artery wall thickness. Eighteen men were assigned to bed rest (second Berlin Bed Rest Study) and randomly allocated to control, resistive exercise, or resistive vibration exercise. Both exercise countermeasures were applied 3 times per week while the subjects were in the supine position on the bed. Sonography was used to examine baseline diameter and wall thickness of the carotid and femoral arteries. Bed rest decreased diameter of the superficial femoral artery (P=0.001) but not the carotid artery (P=0.29). Bed rest induced a significant increase in carotid and superficial femoral artery wall thickness (P=0.007 and 0.03) and wall:lumen ratio (P=0.009 and 0.001). Exercise prevented the increase in wall thickness of the carotid artery. In addition, exercise partly prevented the increased wall:lumen ratio in the superficial femoral artery. In conclusion, 8 weeks of bed rest resulted in approximately 20% increase in conduit artery wall thickness. Exercise countermeasures completely (carotid artery) or partly (superficial femoral artery) abolished the increase in wall thickness. These findings suggest that conduit artery wall thickness, a vascular characteristic associated previously with atherosclerosis, can rapidly adapt to physical inactivity and exercise in humans.

Long-term bed-rest is used to simulate the effect of spaceflight on the human body and test different kinds of countermeasures. The 2nd Berlin BedRest Study (BBR2-2) tested the efficacy of whole-body vibration in addition to high-load resisitance exercise in preventing bone loss during bed-rest. Here we present the protocol of the study and discuss its implementation. Twenty-four male subjects underwent 60-days of six-degree head down tilt bed-rest and were randomised to an inactive control group (CTR), a high-load resistive exercise group (RE) or a high-load resistive exercise with whole-body vibration group (RVE). Subsequent to events in the course of the study (e.g. subject withdrawal), 9 subjects participated in the CTR-group, 7 in the RVE-group and 8 (7 beyond bed-rest day-30) in the RE-group. Fluid intake, urine output and axiallary temperature increased during bed-rest (p < .0001), though similarly in all groups (p > or = .17). Body weight changes differed between groups (p < .0001) with decreases in the CTR-group, marginal decreases in the RE-group and the RVE-group displaying significant decreases in body-weight beyond bed-rest day-51 only. In light of events and experiences of the current study, recommendations on various aspects of bed-rest methodology are also discussed.
