An ultra-fine-grained Al alloy was subjected to compression tests at different strain rates. The strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress was estimated. A strong effect of the baseline strain rate on the mechanisms of plastic deformation was found. It is suggested that a decrease of strain rate results in activation of micro shear banding due to grain boundary sliding. A connection between the strain rate, strain rate sensitivity, and the prevalent deformation mechanism was established.

This thesis takes the form of a collection of theoretical and fictional documents comprising a journal, letters and essays sent home to Australia by a woman travelling in Morocco. In different modes, these papers examine issues of colonialism, gender and desire in western women's travel writing about North Africa and the Middle East.

Porous materials are now becoming attractive to researchers interested in both scientific and industrial applications due to their unique combinations of physical, mechanical, thermal, electrical and acoustic properties in conjunction with excellent energy absorption characteristics. Metallic foams allow efficient conversion of impact energy into deformation work, which has led to increasing applications in energy absorption devices. In particular, foams made of aluminum and its alloys are of special interest because they can be used as lightweight panels, for energy absorption in crash situations and sound or heat absorbing functions in the automotive industry with the aim to reduce weight to improve crashworthiness, safety and comfort.

This work focuses on the deformation behavior of an ultra-fine grained Al-Mg-Si alloy processed by equal channel angular pressing over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates. The effect of temperature and strain rate on the homogeneity of plastic deformation, the evolution of microstructure, the strain rate sensitivity and the underlying deformation mechanisms are investigated. It is demonstrated that the localization of plastic deformation at the micro scale is triggered by grain boundary sliding due to grain boundary sliding due to grain boundary diffusion. The contributions of different deformation mechanisms during the plastic deformation of the material are discussed.

Collections of quiet and reflective images that seem to imply a narrative. Drummond explores the abandoned, the forgotten, the fleeting, the rundown andthe empty buildings, people or moments. Turning upside-down the conventional ideas of aesthetic value, Drummond finds beauty amidst rubbish, empty spaces and the ostensibly ugly or overlooked. These works involve an accumulation of evidence and signs of habitation and presense, the way we're living, ultimately creating some kind of rough portraiture.

Context is an important factor for the success of dynamic service composition. Although many contextbased AI or workflow approaches have been proposed to support dynamic service composition, there is still an unaddressed issue of the support of fine-granularity context management. In this paper, we propose a granularity-based context model together with an approach to supporting the intelligent context-aware service composing problem. The corresponding case study is provided to show the validity of our approach.

This paper takes up the question (reframed by Deleuze and Guattari) of where expansion takes place: at the ends or from the centre. Despite the connotations of mediocrity that can be attributed to the term ‘mainstream’, it is possible to rethink what happens at close range as the space of radical openings. Writers can often believe that what is most abnormal or fringe will produce the highest probability of creative ‘event’. The question, however, can be posed – framed by the lineage of deconstruction – whether the key to unlocking any system of totality or closed possibility may lie in a very central (although physically peripheral) location. If, instead of the classical image, expansion may occur from re-imagined ‘middles’ rather than conventional ‘margins’, this reading of where potential can arise may offer a more resilient model than that of fragile peripheries, forever exposed to being amputated from staid centres of status and restricted participation. Drawing on the writings of Deleuze and Guattari, Derrida and Badiou, this paper seeks to unsettle any simplistic approach to the notion of edge, reinscribing it within the repetitiveness of our situations, to argue that right in the middle of the so-called mainstream, there might be the fine rivers of aporia that when encountered in thought can constitutes gates to that which is most radical in writing and other creative practices.
