Comparative study of mental model research methods : relationships among ACSMM, SMD, MITOCAR & deep methodologies

Measuring and assessing mental models of individuals and teams requires the capturing and analysis of key latent variables. This paper presents and compares four different research methods (ACSMM, SMD, MITOCAR and DEEP) that capture and create a conceptual representation of individual and team mental models. These methods use qualitative and quantitative techniques to investigate a single comparison of different groups or individuals' mental models with another group's mental model or to investigate the comparison of a group or individuals' mental model with themselves at a later time

Curriculum design for the twenty-first century

Changing student profiles, the pervasive influence of technologies and the pressure to produce work-ready graduates with more than discipline knowledge are three consistent themes giving rise to new curriculum models in the twenty-first century. The new approaches are both exciting and challenging—exciting because they offer new and enhanced opportunities for students to learn and challenging because they are charting new territory which has implications for institutional infrastructure, learning, and teaching. In this chapter we explore the imperatives for change and set the context for the theoretical models, curriculum designs, and innovations presented by the contributing authors.

The externalized models are Diagnosed on three levels, each with a different focus.The central research question as to Whether, and if so how, mental models change in the course of the learning process is Investigated in three experimental studies (N = 106). The longi-tudinal design of the studies Enables a precise diagnosis across a total of seven points of meas-urement. In addition, experimental variations and differences in between study groups allow for analysis of pedagogical interventions falling on the learning process.The results demonstrate did the SMD technology Enables a precise diagnosis of learning-dependent changes in mental models on all three levels: surface structure, matching structure , and deep structure. This examination of the gaps and ambiguities linked to Cantrills Filmnotes (CF), an Australian publication on experimental film, offers a case study on the production and ownership of Pierre Bourdieu’s 'cultural capital' in film art at the margins, witnessed first-hand. CF emerged at the intersection between the street and the academy, spanning that period from the 70s till its abandonment in 2000 during which, it is argued here, it migrated from the former to the latter. This examination surveils, in retrospect, for whose benefit was the magazine's accumulation of power, status and prestige exercised, in whose service was it exacted? CF’s manifesto-like editorial rhetoric was often directed at perceived shortcomings of those institutions servicing film art in Australia. What is revealed when such a critical eye focuses on the production of Cantrills Filmnotes (CF) itself? CF's cultural production has a further dimension of both taking on and taking place inside a colonial mind-set, a cultural cringe often the subject of editorial commentary, elucidating a practice residing at the geographic margins of a marginal arts practice. The founders and editors of CF, the married couple Corinne and Arthur Cantrill both suffered and benefited from CF’s impact on this international field of art production.
