Understanding the ion transport behavior of organic ionic plastic crystals (OIPCs) is crucial for their potential application as solid electrolytes in various electrochemical devices such as lithium batteries. In the present work, the ion transport mechanism is elucidated by analyzing experimental data (single-crystal XRD, multinuclear solid-state NMR, DSC, ionic conductivity, and SEM) as well as the theoretical simulations (second moment-based solid static NMR line width simulations) for the OIPC diethyl(methyl)(isobutyl)phosphonium hexafluorophosphate ([P1,2,2,4][PF6]). This material displays rich phase behavior and advantageous ionic conductivities, with three solidsolid phase transitions and a highly “plastic” and conductive final solid phase in which the conductivity reaches 10–3 S cm–1. The crystal structure shows unique channel-like packing of the cations, which may allow the anions to diffuse more easily than the cations at lower temperatures. The strongly phase-dependent static NMR line widths of the 1H, 19F, and 31P nuclei in this material have been well simulated by different levels of molecular motions in different phases. Thus, drawing together of the analytical and computational techniques has allowed the construction of a transport mechanism for [P1,2,2,4][PF6]. It is also anticipated that utilization of these techniques will allow a more detailed understanding of the transport mechanisms of other plastic crystal electrolyte materials.

This paper describes the development of a microfluidic methodology, using RNA extraction and reverse transcription PCR, for investigating expression levels of cytochrome P450 genes. Cytochrome P450 enzymes are involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics, including many commonly prescribed drugs, therefore information on their expression is useful in both pharmaceutical and clinical settings. RNA extraction, from rat liver tissue or primary rat hepatocytes, was performed using a silica-based solid-phase extraction technique. Following elution of the purified RNA, amplification of target sequences for the housekeeping gene, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and the cytochrome P450 gene CYP1A2, was carried out using a one-step reverse transcription PCR. Once the microfluidic methodology had been optimized, analysis of control and 3-methylcholanthrene-induced primary rat hepatocytes were used to evaluate the system. As expected, GAPDH was consistently expressed, whereas CYP1A2 levels were found to be raised in the drug-treated samples. The proposed system offers an initial platform for development of both rapid throughput analyzers for pharmaceutical drug screening and point-of-care diagnostic tests to aid provision of drug regimens, which can be tailor-made to the individual patient.

Full conformational and energy explorations are conducted on an organic ionic plastic crystal, 1-ethyl-1-methylpyrrolidium tetrafluoroborate [C2 mpyr][BF4 ]. The onsets of various stages of dynamic behaviour, which appear to account for low-temperature solid-solid phase transitions, are investigated by using quantum-chemical simulations. It is suggested that pseudorotation of the pyrrolidine ring occurs in the first instance; the partial rotation of the entire cation subsequently occurs and may be accompanied by reorientation of the ethyl chain as the temperature increases further. A cation-anion configuration, whereby BF4 (-) interacts with the C2 mpy cation from the side of the ring, is the most likely structure in the low-temperature phase IV region. These interpretations are supported by (13) C nuclear magnetic resonance chemical-shift analysis.

LiFe1 − xSmxPO4/C cathode materials were synthesized though a facile hydrothermal method. Compared with high-temperature solid-phase sintering, the method can allow for the fabrication of low Sm content (2 %), a scarce and expensive rare earth element, while the presence of an optimized carbon coating with large amount of sp2-type carbon sharply increases the material’s electrochemical performance. The high-rate dischargeability at 5 C, as well as the exchange current density, can be increased by 21 and 86 %, respectively, which were attributed to the fine size and the large cell parameter a/c as much. It should be pointed out that the a/c value will be increased for the LiFePO4 Sm-doped papered by both of the two methods, while the mechanism is different: The value c is increased for the front and the value a is decreased for the latter, respectively.

Two approaches are used for silk particle production: bottom up and top down. In the bottom up approach, different liquid-solid phase transfer techniques are adapted to fabricate particles from silk solution. In the top down approach, silk fibres are milled by various means to prepare ultrafine silk particles. Many important properties of particles such as size, geometry, porosity, stability and biodegradability are dependent on the specific methods of particle production. These properties influence drug loading and release, delivery modes, biocompatibility and their clearance from the body. Particle properties also determine biomechanical properties of particle reinforced composite scaffolds. Thus correlation between preparation, characterisation and application of silk particles for a specific biomedical application is critical. Progress made in this direction and challenges ahead are discussed in this chapter. © 2014 Woodhead Publishing Limited. All rights reserved.

A green method for the deoxygenation of graphene oxide (GO) was developed using K2CO3 as a reusable reduction agent. The size and thickness of the reduced GO are less than 1 μm and around 0.85 nm, respectively. Carbon dioxide is the only byproduct during this process. The reduction mechanism of the graphene oxide includes two reduction steps. On the one hand, ionic oxygen generated from the electrochemical reaction between hydroxyl ions and oxygen in the presence of K2CO3 reacts with carbonyl groups attached to the GO layers at 50°C. On the other hand, ionic oxygen attacks hydroxyl and epoxide groups, which become carbonyl groups and then are converted to carbon dioxide by K2CO3 at 90°C. These oxygenous groups are finally converted to CO2 from graphene layers, leading to the formation of graphene sheets. Headspace solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry detected the existence of n-dodecanal and 4-ethylbenzoic acid cyclopentyl ester during the reduction, suggesting that oxygen functional groups on the GO layers are not only aligned, but randomly dispersed in some areas based on the proposed mechanism.
