The microstructure and mechanical response of three extruded magnesium alloys, Mg-3Al-1Zn (AZ31), Mg-1.5Mn (Ml) and Mg-lMn-0.4RE (ME10) are examined. The tensile yield strength of ME10 was nearly half that of AZ31 and Ml. The tensile elongations were 6%, 11% and 19% for Ml, AZ31 and ME10, respectively. This range of properties is large and is attributed to the unique extrusion texture produced in ME10, and the high density of fine particles in Ml.

The extrusion behaviour, texture and tensile ductility of five binary Mg-based alloys have been examined and compared to pure Mg. The five alloying additions examined were Al, Sn, Ca, La and Gd. When these alloys are compared at equivalent grain size, the La- and Gd-containing alloys show the best ductilities. This has been attributed to a weaker extrusion texture. These two alloying additions, La and Gd, were found to also produce a new texture peak with View the MathML source parallel to the extrusion direction. This “rare earth texture” component was found to be suppressed at high extrusion temperatures. It is proposed that the View the MathML source texture component arises from oriented nucleation at shear bands.

A series of alloys have been produced with microalloying additions of rare-earth (RE) elements in the range of 0.1–0.4 wt.%. The alloys have been extruded to produce grain sizes of 23 ± 5 μm. The texture of the extruded alloys was measured, and it was found that the extrusion texture was weakened by the addition of RE elements. The samples with weakened extrusion textures exhibited an increase in the tensile elongation.

One ZM61 alloy (6·2%Zn, 1·2%Mn) and two magnesium alloys containing nominally 3% of neodymium and yttrium respectively have been prepared in the form of hot extruded flat strips. Their textures and microstructures have been quantified and series of mechanical tests were carried out to determine plane stress yield loci in both the solution treated and aged conditions. The ZM61 alloy had a sharp texture and marked anisotropy of strength that could be rationalised in terms of deformation by basal <a> slip and {1012}<1011> twinning. This material was much weaker in compression than in tension. Precipitation hardening on aging caused a greater impedance to twinning than to slip with the result that the anisotropy was somewhat reduced. The Mg–3Nd alloy had a very weak and different texture but nevertheless demonstrated a pronounced anisotropy of strength. Aging increased the yield stress by about 80% and also inhibited twinning to some extent although the degree of anisotropy remained almost unaffected. The Mg–3Y alloy which showed a texture of intermediate strength was different in type from either of the others. Its strength behaviour was close to isotropic; in particular, no difference existed between tensile and compressive loading, and aging produced only a marginal increase in strength. Twins were relatively infrequent in the deformed Mg–3Y alloy but its mechanical behaviour could not be rationalised according to simple models.

We discuss the problem of texture recognition based on the grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM). We performed a number of numerical experiments to establish whether the accuracy of classification is optimal when GLCM entries are aggregated into standard metrics like contrast, dissimilarity, homogeneity, entropy, etc., and compared these metrics to several alternative aggregation methods. We conclude that k nearest neighbors classification based on raw GLCM entries typically works better than classification based on the standard metrics for noiseless data, that metrics based on principal component analysis inprove classification, and that a simple change from the arithmetic to quadratic mean in calculating the standard metrics also improves classification.

This paper presents the use of the wavelet transform to extract fibre surface texture features for classifying cashmere and superfine merino wool fibres. To extract features from brightness variations caused by the cuticular scale height, shape and interval provides an effective way for characterising different animal fibres and subsequently classifying them. This may enable the development of a completely automated and objective system for animal fibre
identification.

Background The aim of this study was to identify specific bone characteristics of stress fracture (SF) cases in sportswomen. To date, no tool is able to distinguish individuals who are at risk, limiting preventive measures.

Material and methods We investigated the skeletal system of sportswomen who did sustain SF in the past (n = 19) and compared it with that of female controls (C) with a similar sporting history but without any fracture history (n = 20).

Bone mass and body composition were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Bone micro-architecture was investigated by calcaneal ultrasound and fractal analysis of calcaneus radiographic images. Oestradiol levels were measured by E.I.A, and IGF-1 by R.I.A. Menstrual characteristics, nutrient intake, and training were assessed using questionnaires.

Results The result of the fractal analysis, expressed by the Hmean parameter, was significantly lower in the SF group, reflecting a more complex structure of the trabecular micro-architectural organization (P < 0·005). Body mass index (BMI) at birth was also found to be lower in the SF cases as compared with their C (P < 0·03).

Multivariate analysis revealed that the fractal parameter Hmean, bone mineral content (BMC) at Ward's triangle and the BMI at birth correctly assigned 84·85% of the female athletes into their respective SF or C groups (P = 0·001).

Conclusion These results suggest that the fractal parameter and the BMI at birth may be able to identify female athletes most at risk for this overuse bone injury, as their low indexes might reflect a greater skeletal sensitivity.

The microstructure and crystallographic texture development in an austenitic Ni-30 pct Fe model alloy was investigated within the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) regime using hot torsion testing. The prominent DRX nucleation mechanism was strain-induced grain boundary migration accompanied by the formation of large-angle sub-boundaries and annealing twins. The increase in DRX volume fraction occurred through the formation of multiple twinning chains. With increasing strain, the pre-existing Σ3 twin boundaries became gradually converted to general boundaries capable of acting as potent DRX nucleation sites. The texture characteristics of deformed grains resulted from the preferred consumption of high Taylor factor components by new recrystallized grains. Similarly, the texture of DRX grains was dominated by low Taylor factor components as a result of their lower consumption rate during the DRX process. The substructure of deformed grains was characterized by “organized,” banded subgrain arrangements, while that of the DRX grains displayed “random,” more equiaxed subgrain/cell configurations.

An austenitic Ni-30%Fe model alloy was employed to investigate the texture and substructure development within the deformed matrix and dynamically recrystallized (DRX) grains during hot torsion deformation. Both the deformed matrix and DRX grains predominantly displayed the crystallographic texture components expected for simple shear deformation. The characteristics of the deformed matrix texture evolution during deformation largely resulted from the preferred consumption of high Taylor factor components by new recrystallized grains. Likewise, the comparatively weaker crystallographic texture of DRX grains became increasingly dominated by low Taylor factor components as a result of their easier nucleation and lower consumption rate during DRX. There was a significant difference in the substructure formation mechanism between the deformed matrix and DRX grains for a given texture component. The deformed matrix substructure was largely characterized by “organized”, banded subgrain arrangements with alternating misorientations, while the substructure of DRX grains was more “random” in character and displayed complex, more equiaxed subgrain/cell arrangements characterized by a local accumulation of misorientations. Substructure characteristics of individual orientation components were principally consistent with the corresponding Taylor factor values.

The substructure and texture development during dynamic recrystallization (DRX) of an austenitic Ni–30%Fe model alloy was investigated using hot torsion testing. The current results revealed that the DRX texture was dominated by grains with a low Taylor factor component. This was related to the preferred nucleation and lower consumption rates of these grains during DRX. The substructure of DRX grains was ‘‘random” in character and displayed complex subgrain/cell arrangements that largely depended on grain orientation.

The microstructure and crystallographic texture characteristics were studied in a 22Cr-6Ni-3Mo duplex stainless steel subjected to plastic deformation in torsion at a temperature of 1000 °C using a strain rate of 1 s−1. High-resolution EBSD was successfully used for precise phase and substructural characterization of this steel. The austenite/ferrite ratio and phase morphology as well as the crystallographic texture, subgrain size, misorientation angles and misorientation gradients corresponding to each phase were determined over large sample areas. The deformation mechanisms in each phase and the interrelationship between the two are discussed.

The transformation texture associated with martensite formation in the titanium alloy Ti- 6Al-4V has been investigated. Samples were heated into the fully b phase and quenched to form a microstructure of very fine a' martensite with no evidence of diffusional transformation at the prior b grain boundaries. EBSD texture measurements on the martensite showed that within each prior b grain, although typically all 12 variants of a’ were formed, the fractions of variants was far from uniform. The a’ texture was markedly different from values calculated using equal variant probability, also indicating that significant variant selection was occurring during martensitic transformation. This effect was modelled on the basis of elastic interaction between martensite events.
